So are you looking for more low key stuff? I thought Avengers was awesome. Whedon is super nailing movies lately for me. I've heard Prometheus does a great job with its ambience.
Interesting fact: Alien Resurrection was written by Joss Whedon and directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. I just learned that the other day, and it kinda blew my mind.
I jumped on the midnight train at the last minute. Enjoyed! What else can one want from a summer movie? A few cheesy things, but mostly delightful alien shit to divert my attentions.
Jesus, it gave me an instant rush that was unpleasant and caused anxiety. Then it mellowed out and I felt amped but ok. Then we came home and coke-talked about the movie for like 2 hours and neither of us could fall asleep.
If I ever go back to school I know where to find my trucker-style energy bump! But seriously, fuck that thing.
I will be inhaling antibiotics in good old fashioned pill form because I apparently have developed a pretty nasty sinus and ear infection, and instead of being up all night I kinda just want to sleep a lot because I was up all night last night with the NEW caffeine called "crazy ear ache". So I am probably out on the movie tonight which is a bummer because you guys are surprisingly the only people I know who want to see it, but que cera cera. THE END
Enjoyed the Harry Nilsson doc last night. Netflix streamer. If you want to get to know the creme of caucasian boomer songwriter dudes this doc is chocked full of 'em. Jimmy Webb, Randy Newman, John Lennon.... Nilsson is one of those come from nowhere geniuses that can't seem to abide themselves after early success. Feels like you get inside the dude's head. A very merry death wish. Didn't realize he lived until '94. Grateful for the good stuff...
Just got halfway through LVT's "Melancholia" before giving up. IMHO... so boring. Why K. Dunst is considered one of the better actors I will never know. Her gray-rimmed eyes contain 0% expression. I felt the movie was all surface, no substance. I resent this director's arrogance for making me patiently watch these contentless scenes, hoping that I will be tricked into thinking that something is happening simply because the hand-held camera is moving around. I just don't get the feeling that he is going for at all. I feel it doesn't even look good visually. When it looks "pretty," it's very flat, like an advertisement. The emperor has no clothes, D-. I welcome anyone who can guide me into an appreciation of this film maker.
It seems like a very divisive film. Although I have known some people who had your experience, went back later and watched the whole thing and decided they liked it. I think the reactions to this film are interesting.
LT I am surprised to hear this, from you of all people, knowing your interest in the dark side, the brutal brutal reality of the utter fucked-ness of life and humanity and how nothing good humanity does can ever mitigate not only the fact that we turn to shit everything we touch but that we're all just gonna die no matter what. The movie was a brutal forceful confrontation of this stuff that offered no succor, no grain of hope, no ray of any kind of light. It was the most brutal confrontation of the meaninglessness of everything in the universe that I have ever seen/imagined!
the end when the sister says she wants to listen to music and drink wine while waiting to die and Dunst is like "I'll meet you on the fucking toilet, why don't we listen to Beethoven's 9th," really killed me
I have hated every LVT film I have ever seen, so so so much, but I loved this one!!!!!
LT yeah, Melancholia is in two distinct parts--the first part is the wedding, and the second part is some indeterminate amount of time after the wedding, and is more focused on Charlotte Gainsbourg. I think you should give it one more chance. The second part is where these themes become more explicitly explored. It's like the first half doesn't really make sense until you see the second half--Dunst's behavior only becomes explicable once you see the kinds of issues she's been grappling with, etc.
No good movies have been here for a very long time. The movies just don't come visit as often when you live on an island. There was this one time when that guy FUGDEE and I went to see Prometheus in 3D at 10:30am and it completely fucked with our physical existence for the next two days. There was this other time when we went to see that superhero movie.
BUT NOW THIS WEEKEND 3 movies I want to see arrive at the same time! I have to decide between: Moonrise Kingdom The Tempest Turn Me On, Dammit! While Moonrise seems like the "best" movie on the list, I feel like I should embrace the opportunity to see one of the other two since they'll probably be harder to see later! Maybe Turn Me On! Maybe The Tempest! ALL THREE?! I guess having options is a good thing?
Went to the Bobcat Goldthwait movie "God Bless America" last night. I laughed but it was a little speechy. Still, probably my favorite sympathetic serial killer movie. In the vein of, but not as imaginative as, Idiocracy and/or Network.

The premise is great... which is why I was disappointed at all.
All the boys were so great and the main girl was great!
Would watch again.
Beautiful country it takes place in.
It was the first movie we've gone to on tour that I have not fallen asleep in like six attempts.
What now, B?
