activist clicking

edited June 2012
i have gotten into a weird habit that i call activist clicking. becoming aware of the impact of clicking something on a website, i have found myself clicking things not because i want to but because i support something. for instance, i often click on the ads of web pages that i really like, even if i have no interest in looking at the ad. i also make it a point to click all the film and art reviews on the local newspaper's website, since film and art reviews are slowly going to be wayside in favor of sports and politics and crime and sports. also, the discussion in another thread about FB has got me clicking 'like' a lot, hoping to help my friends who i don't want to see get swallowed up by the FB filters.

it's been weird watching the internet drift in the direction of network TV, where ratings rule. traffic, clicks, likes, and comments, are replacing the Nielson boxes that monitor people TV viewing habits. Watching the Oregonian's website has been so sad- stories that don't generate tons of comments get pushed to the way way back, to the point where we now see 20+ sports updates a day, but less then 10 film/art/music stories all week. i don't like it.

  • Clicktivism.
  • I agree. Focusing on clicks/likes is making the internet worse.

  • On the other hand... advertisers pay per click. So if you click and don't buy, they are losing money...
  • only click on the ads of companies you don't like!
  • hactivist clicking!
  • Art and music kids should find ways to make sports more arty and musical. Creative people hating on sports is like religious people hating on science; mostly unnecessary. Also, ads are art sometimes.

p.s. not knocking on creative people.

Knocking... creative... boxing, UFC, football... hmm, sounds very cool..

Incidentally, I am showing some videos in the next couple of weeks at this festival in Austin called NMASS. I am really excited about one of my fellow artists. It is a video installation where the imagery is football players. I have only seen still images but it looks like the figures are almost in this neon ballet.

that installation sounds awesome. Sorry for my previous comment being a little off topic, I just wish sports and art would get together more often. Let some smart designers at those outfits/uniforms and those brands and stuff. Sports needs to stop being ugly, and a lot of artists need to get in shape.
  • * I love sports. i could probably recite the Trailblazers rosters for at least the past 10 seasons and could tell you all about the Oregon Ducks football team, including incoming recruits and Ducks in the NFL.

** I just wished the media covered art/music/films as much as they cover sports.
  • click on the ads of the political candidates you don't want to win, who advertise on the websites you want to support.

double bang for your buck. or click.
