Jogging Tips

edited May 2012
Did I hallucinate a thread where everyone was like
"Jogging!"
and a few people were like
"When did that happen?"

So I'm doing a mock of a Portland jogger's resource/community website for a class...
would you guys mind just spouting off some jogging knowledge and about your awesome new healthy habit?
like
Where is your local runner's shop? NE, SW, NW? I have one for SE called Pace Setter Athletic. Nice little shop employed by some total runner dorks.
How far do you run and where do you run?
What sorts of tunes do you listen to?
Do you have some good playlists?
App?
Shoes?
Shorts?
Ipod/phone armband?
Philosophy?
Stretching vs. Not Stretching?
Stories?
Knee health tips?

It we be cool if I could get a lot of this sort of info in one or two places place. So talk about your awesome habit some more sometime!

Thanks
Tom

Also, this band is like the greatest all time jogging band.

also it's The Nerdist podcast theme.

  • I have been a major jogger my whole life (ran track in high school). I am a pretty low-frills jogger, no apps or technology aside from shoes. My new place to get shoes is FitRightNW because they analyze your gait and tell you which shoes will work for your particular weird body. My shoes I got there have really changed my life.

When I jog I carry an iPod in my hand, which is horrible but I've been doing it for years and even though I hate it I never make any effort to get a different situation (see: low-frills). I scotch tape the earbuds into my ears so they don't fall out.

I usually run 3 miles, roughly. I listen to a playlist including Air Supply, Beyonce, Timberlake, that song "Safety Dance," "Somebody to Love" by Queen, "Holding out for a Hero" by Bonnie Tyler, "Man in the Mirror," Devo's version of "Satisfaction," and some others.

    I stretch before and after.

However all this is moot because last July while jogging I pulled something in my groin that has yet to heal, and I haven't jogged since, and it's awful and feels like a part of me is missing and when I think about it too much I almost cry, so

  • one thing is SPORTS BRA, it needs to be super heavy duty and tight even for we wee-breasted fellows. Running plays hell with the ta-tas, why does it hurt so bad??? How did our foremothers chase deer in the forest with these things flying every which way???

@YoursTruly Scotch Tape! Genius and weird! I totally stopped bringing my iPod because I get so annoyed with the earbuds.

I don't live in Portland anymore, but this was one of my favorite routes. I pretty much always included running on the water. It is so nice there. I run around 40 miles a week, different amounts on different days.

I used to use the Nike+ running app and now I have a Garmin GPS watch thing with the HRM. I have some cool new Asics and my favorite shorts have the built in undies. So much support.

I think running is cool and relaxing and I feel tired and cranky when I don't run. I particularly enjoy longer runs where I can kind of space out and meditate.

Also stretching thoroughly is way important.
  • I love running. My favorite way to exercise, next to yoga, which I also can't do anymore.
40 miles a week is epic. If I am ever on my feet again I will train for a marathon

Matthew, try the scotch tape!! It's awesome!

you guys must have big ear holes. I have dainty ears so my buds are in there tight.
The earphone chord is one of the biggest nuisances of jogging for me. It will get caught on my elbow or arm and just rip my headphones right out sometimes. That is an epic amount of jogging Matthew. I wish I could do that sort of distance. Someday. That is a bummer about the injury YT. I worry a lot about that sort of injury. If I couldn't jog I think I would take a shot at a swimming regiment.

    All gold jog blogs.
  • Speaking of support, I used to keep my ipod IN my super-tight sports bra. It was perfect, I never had to worry about it (except maybe getting a little sweaty) and just fed the cords through my shirt.
  • That is a great solution. Maybe I could crotch stuff with my ipod, and just feed it up?
  • "Barefoot" runner. Right now I use Vibrams but the next pair I buy will be something like Merrell's Trail Glove. The separated toes on Vibrams don't really matter and they are the ugliest shoes I have ever owned b/c of them.

I don't listen to music, I like listening to my breath and the sounds around me.

No stretching. "When you stretch and hold a pose, the brain thinks you are about to damage yourself and it then sends out nerve impulses that actually tighten the muscles. The result is, you're less ready for activity, not more ready for activity."

I think the most important injury prevention tip is to start slow and don't push yourself too much. Every exercise book/article mentions this, but I definitely ignored it when I first started running, and injured myself by ramping up my routine too quickly. Listen to your body!

Oh, form is also really important to not hurting yourself.
  • Podcasts.
  • I am going to do a jog later for the first time in a couple of weeks. I was really sick and working super hard for a couple of weeks is why I've slacked a bit. I think I am not going to stretch and just do a slow warm-up and see how it goes. I'm not looking forward to future wheezing, but man am I looking forward to blood pumping again.
  • I just jogged for 20 uninterrupted minutes- a record for me! The British lady that tells me how to exercise is probably so proud of me right now.
  • long fast walks are a super cool and an equally beneficial alternative to jogging. Jogging is just for people who don't have time for long cool walks (imho). With walks you can pick cool destinations too, but i feel silly jogging to places... makes me feel like im in a hurry to get there and leave again.

Good way to walk/jog more, is to trick yourself into committing earlier in the day when you are more ambitious. Get dropped off somewhere far, or carpool to work with someone who gets off earlier than you. Also, you can get a really good book on tape and a walkman. You will feel like you have go for a walk to listen to the next chapter (unless you have a tape deck in your car... then you will have to exercise restraint).
  • "endurance exercise is known to stimulate neuronal growth in the brain’s memory-forming hippocampus"

    or

Running is good for your brain.

  • Totally the truth.
  • This explains why the parents of @YoursTruly are so awesome.
  • If exercise made you a good person my parents would be Jesus Christ
  • p.s. that article is fascinating
so fun to discover something physical we are better at than an animal
so sick of the animal kingdom beating us out in every category besides, like, nuclear physics, which is like, who gives a shit
  • animals aren't very good at skateboarding or softball
  • I just did 5 miles as hard as I could, and my body definitely did not like it...
but I totally did it without stopping, walking, or death!
    I'm so smart right now!
  • also, we're the best at killing humans!
  • true, and ruining the planet for all forms of life!

we have that in the bag
  • Seems like a leemer would be an amazing skate boarder
  • I super endorse this app
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/5k-runner-couch-to-5k-workout/id439852091?mt=8
it has worked great for me and there is a 10k and 21k version also. It really made things super easy.
  • i need some non-jean type garb for my leg parts, and some of them exercise shoes, maybe some non-huge-studio headphones

the Nike Dry Fit series shorts have worked well for me because they can make it through a few jogs without getting too gross and needing to be washed. If you have a running specialty store near you, you might consider going to them to figure out what you should get for shoes. They will usually watch you jog a little and check out your arch and stuff to find you a good pair. I went to this one to get my last pair, and they were nice and helpful and ok on the wallet.
  • Where my swimmers at! Just got some sick new earplugs that feel much better than my old ones. You're never gonna sprain your ankle in the pool!
  • I can't really swim, more of a flounder/dog paddle
  • You'd be surprised how fast you improve. When I started, I'd feel pretty worn out after 4 laps, but it gets easier pretty fast and since you have nothing to do but think about how to improve your form while you're doing it, you focus on that.
  • How much does it cost?
  • I’ve never been able to get the breathing down for freestyle so I always just do breast stroke which is mega slow but sounds like petting.
  • Apparently you can swim at the Buckman pool for like $3 a session. My gym is $30 a month. I think the Hollywood community gym also has a pool, not sure about cost.
  • Breathing is another one of those parts of form that you just slowly evolve over laps and laps and laps. Before I swam regularly, I always took breaths on my right side, and it took me a few weeks before alternating sides felt normal.
  • question: where can I get sporty shorts WITH POCKETS? I mean, pockets big enough to hold a tennis ball? Why don't these exist anymore?
  • I did a shit ton of swimmings and recommend it. Not never a racer though. But like any exercizes, keep a check on repetitive stress and tendonitises. Mix it up. Also fins and hand paddles are cool for power.
  • I got shoes from FitRight NW. That store was almost too intense for me (they refused to analyze my gait on the machine because 1) I was wearing tights and 2) I hesitated when the attendant was like "DO YOU KNOW HOW TO USE A TREADMILL?" like... what exactly am I supposed to say. You walk on it and push a button to make it go fast or slow.). But the shoes fit. Plus they sell three packs of cute socks with the store name knit in the ankle. Also the attendant who applied my shoes was like "personally I don't know much about shoe fit, I run barefoot." Meanwhile, there was a lecture about running form. Intense....

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I never knew running could be fun. We have a fun route. It goes through 3 superfund sites, toxic waste grounds that have been abandoned by industry. I like the combination of nature and industry. Part of our route is a crumbling parking lot or warehouse foundation that is turning into a hardwood meadow. The jogging is interspersed with climbing rocks and sandy hills. Last week a bunch of barrels showed up next to one of the fenced superfund areas. One of them wasn't even properly closed. They were classic "hazardous waste storage units." There were a bunch of machines, and these enormous drills. The barrels were gone this week....

This week, I will increase my jogging days to two days per week.
