kickstarter vs USA projects

edited May 2012
it appears kickstarter has some new competition: http://www.usaprojects.org/

anyone have any thoughts on USA Projects? other than a terrible name, they seem pretty cool. but do we really need something other than kickstarter? is the more focused approach to USA Projects really necessary? it seems to me people will be drawn to a fundraising effort by outside forces, not by perusing a website. I DON"T KNOW

  • I love the name! Go USA.
  • So this is specifically arts based? And it's a non-profit?

"USA Projects is open to artists who have been recognized for the caliber and impact of their work by receiving an award, grant, fellowship or residency. Participating artists have been vetted by United States Artists and other esteemed organizations across the country."

I like the idea of a targeted Kickstarter. Less tech focused is always okay.

"All donations to USA Projects and United States Artists are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. Donors receive an immediate email receipt acknowledging their donation."
  • it is arts based, and you have to prove some sort of artistic professional success before you can even start a fund-raising campaign.

i just submitted my resume, wist me luck.
  • What's their cut? I didn't see that...
  • i haven't been able to find that out either. if i am accepted perhaps i will find out then.

in some ways it looks really cool, but i am also suspicious... i've just seen too many money grubbers out there try to take advantage of desperate artists. hopefully this isn't one of those.
  • Regarding how people arrive at projects, I think Andy Baio said 18% of the contributors to his new project were referred from within Kickstarter, so there is some amount of traffic within the site.
