Summer Vacations

edited May 2012
Let the summer vacations thread commence.

I want to go on some this year.
I wish to see Oregon. I wish to know the desert.

You know these fire lookout cabins?
I reserved one for June 3rd that I can't use.
Check it out: http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/recreation/rentals/mal-fall-mt-lo.shtml
It's one of the ones on stilts that has windows all around.
F'k'n bad ass.

It's like 5 hours drive from Portland in the high desert but near forest and a big lake.
Then nearby is this hot spring that has cabins and tent sites. "Crystal Crane" or something. I was going to drive to Burns or John Day, then stay at the hot springs on Saturday, then stay at the fire lookout Sunday.

Don't that sound like fun?

These fire lookouts are rare as f'k' to book. There is like no availability for this one until September.
I really want someone to be able to use my June 3rd reservation!

Won't someone go to this fire lookout cabin?

Comments

  • i will go to that lookout cabin!
  • Goddamn! I would but I'm in England until the 5th of June.
  • and having been to one of these lookout cabins before- we could easily fit a few people in there...
  • BMA, Are you for real?
I got this reservation and I don't know if I can transfer it to you, or you just go with my name and reservation code, or what. I will look into it. Because I am so honored to transfer this rare opportunity, I will waive the $9 registration fee (!). It's only $40!!!!

    What's your email mang
    PM me
  • Sweet score.
  • I AM FOR REAL
    DAMNNNNIT
    AM I TOO LATE????

I am take rare vacation hours right around that time and I have not gone anywhere since I started this job over a year ago and I want this!

Please place me #1 on the wait list.
  • Oh my Sophie's Choice.

    Matt? Thoughts?
  • I'm going to Anacortes in July!
If I can get enough time off I'm also going to the beach in August.
  • I think Matt was saying he'd share.

"we could easily fit a few people in there"
  • Anyone in the John Day neck of woods should seriously check the Kam Wa Chung Museum! http://maps.ngdc.noaa.gov/viewers/hot_springs/ can be useful. But I think some of the springs on private land around there are closed.
  • Zuck, good call!

I still haven't received an email or PM from MM.

    The matter remains fluid.
  • All I wish for the summer vacay
is to take my snoopy to a beach
    and watch him frolic
and to take my snoopy on a hike
and watch him chase a vole
  • I'd take this off yer hands :)

I have a reservation for a fire lookout from the 14th-16th of July but I may give it up to go to the Unknown event in Anacortes.
  • Well isn't this interesting.

Judy, where is your July 14th-16th reservation?
I proposed we throw this into the mix.
    That leaves:
    - Sunday, June 3rd
    - Saturday, July 14th through Monday, July 16th
  • Big Mac, I of course defer to your preferences for this transaction, as I am bound to recognize the time-honored tradition of first to come, first to receive service. I know that I needn't remind you of the fact that the happiness of others, not the least of whom includes Owl, awaits your pleasure. Thank you all for allowing me to potentially enhance your enjoyment of our wonderful state.
  • I will likely also go to Anacortes at that time in July, otherwise I would jump on that one!
  • What The Heck are you all talking about, anyway??!
  • I was suggesting a possible group expedition, but if Mellows wants it that is fine too.
  • I would be very into a group expedition, but it says this place only sleeps 2 and there is no room for camping!

Maybe there is really room for a tent or two, and then it could be a fun gang?
  • Hm, I might want that July one... I have a deadline on that Friday, so theoretically I can do it, but I haven't worked with these folks before, so I don't know what their deadlines are like.
  • cool. I'll let you know. It's dependent on whether m'lady is still in town then or not.
  • My toes are saying wavy water and sandy beach. I miss Astoria. To be continued.
  • I miss beach too, sandy beach and also specifically the cool fog drippy streets of Astoria.

If anyone drives out there, stash me in your car.
  • Yesterday my guy and I explored coastal St. John's, that "solemn and majestic neighborhood of human grit and splendor." We went down a road that became a trail that became a concrete- and fallen hardwood-crossed trail. A creepy skeleton of a warehouse that has been turned into a beer, graffiti, and fire party spot. A harbor where a boat has been staying for several months. It's not docked, just anchored off the river, and the people who live on it must take a little boat to shore and walk to Fred Meyer for supplies. Then there is a stair case to the special bridge that only train tracks get to use. We sat on the other side of the tracks and threw rocks at the Superfund. This trail goes all along the coast from one bridge to another.
  • FIRE LOOKOUT TOMORROW

There is a small, but worrying, chance that I will not be able to go as I am starting to feel a bit sick.

Does anyone else think that they would want to use this tomorrow if I can't? 5 hour drive, but very beautiful. Electricity, fridge, stove, futon, but must bring your own water.
    ?????
  • I'd be up for this, tentatively! Let me know!
  • OK, good to know!

I'm still on the fence... not actually sick, but everyone I work with has been super ill.
At the moment I have NOBODY going with me, so that's another factor that I'm thinking about... if no one wants to go and I'm feeling shaky I will tell you by this evening?
  • Ummmmm......
  • ????

Bobby Briggs has removed his hat from the ring, due to the extensive drive time entailed. I may have found someone to go with me, so fingers crossed I'll head out in the morning. If not, bigmac give me your email and I'll give you the code to the cabin.
