To write! To write!

Portland busy bees, I am searching for your tips. I am looking for a writing workshop, retreat, or short course in the Portland area this winter. Structured courses or just a place for intense personal concentration on the written word- either is good. I have projects in mind and projects barely started in environmental writing and I am in need of some push to get them moving forward...do you know of a spot that can give me the space, and maybe a bit of the guidance or collaboration to keep my work on a roll?

I've heard two lovely suggestions already- Caldera and Signal Fire Arts. Do you know of others?

You might look into the Espy Foundation in Oysterville, Washington.

    Defunct! :`- (
  • I know one friend of UHX came to Portland and got a place and just wrote for like a month or two. Wasn't social really, just got down to business!
  • I could just visit you at set times and give you an icy stare which says "Are you writing, or are you wasting your life?"
  • It's not a bad idea, Mikey, but I think in that case I would need to go somewhere where I don't know anybody. Otherwise I would just want to hang out...so I guess I either need isolation or a bit of structure. Or an icy stare approximately every 3 hours.
  • "Do you want to die without having tried to live?"
  • ESPY is over? Wha? But I was going to do that residency!
  • this isn't Portland, but it looks really cool:

  • I have a copy writing job now and it really forces you to write, because if you don't write they will be pretty angry because of the moneys they gave you. Recommended!
  • Try the Sterling Room for Writers at the Multnomah County Library - which, thank heavens, isn't going to have to shut its doors after tonight's election. If you cast a ballot in favor of renewing the library levy, thank you!!!

My friend pitched this place to me but I wasn't ever in PDX long enough to check it out for real. On paper, it looks pretty much like what you said you wanted. There's a membership fee. I think that covers free coffee and wifi. So it's like an internet cafe/clubhouse for people who are trying to write: free coffee and zones of no chitchat.

It's in St. Johns, the solemn and majestic neighborhood of human grit and splendor.
