I'm liking Like.

Comments

  • I would love to read an in depth study about the effects of the 'like' (or stats, page views, etc) on the human psyche. i have a suspicion that the simple act of making stats publicly accessible plays a huge huge role in the addictive quality of social media. whether it's number of likes, number of friends, number of people who have watched your video, etc, i think the simple act of having that information public really puts an interesting spin on things. it's like a public ranking of popularity- perfectly calculated unlike the old days where we had to surmise who was the coolest/funniest/smartest/etc on our own.

i would love to see what the internet would look like if all this data was not visible. how would social media and such be different if public stats had never been introduced as a part of it?
  • Yeah, before stats everyone just assumed that I was the coolest/funniest/smartest.
  • not to completely change the subject, but for some weird reason this, and several other new posts, are only viewable if you are signed in. did the 'like' thing somehow trip up some new privacy thing?
  • Ah crud. I will fix that. Thanks for pointing it out.

To add the `likes` I had to update everything which messed with the user permissions.

Design question for the "General Discussions Page" where all the discussion titles and data are listed:

Would it be a giant pain to move the green-oval LIKEs to the right a notch or two (similar to their placement on this page?)

The advantage would be similar placement on both pages (this one and the overview) as well as collecting all the colored eggs in one basket (cough).

Not worth it if it is, in fact, a pain.

    I'm really loving likes!

(I like that we can't like our own likes.)
  • Is there an option to turn off the Likes total on the main page that lists all the threads? Looks bad.
  • What if each comment has an optional guest book.
  • BigMac...

I am so addicted to my own stats for tumblr and flickr. It's like a love-hate relationship I have to my Ego. It's funny how the need for approval becomes absolutely quantified in this way.
  • Yeah, that's true. Who cares about the likes on the discussion list?
  • Well I'm going to try to tailor all of my comments for likes.

I think it's useful. It's an indication of how funny a thread is!

(for example, no "Likes" in the politics thread!)
