Friday - Made dinner with the missus, went to bed at 9pm.
Saturday - Got up at 10am (13 hours of sleep!), Sasha made a really incredible breakfast, went to my parent's house, told them which of my childhood books to get rid of (most of them except for 5), got a whiskey and some CRAB DIP at the Still House in Oregon City, took a shower, bartended at a little YU event, in bed by midnight.
Sunday - Breakfast burritos, skated at some skateparks from 11-2, had a marg and a Brian's bowl at Por Que No, walked down to YU and picked up a Kyle Field cruiser deck, had a little picnic at Mt Tabor with friends, played darts at the Horse Brass, went and set up the cruiser with trucks and wheels, rode home, showered, went to bed.
ALL IN ALL, A GREAT WEEKEND. Shouts out to the following: Sasha, the weather, everyone at YU, Don Barthelme, good food, skateboarding, bicycles, crab dip, whiskey, Por Que No, Judas Spritzer, Marcus and Margo, brunch.
Saturday, morning, found a mini garage sale on the morning walk. Got some CDs and a record for $5--Shellac, Sonic Youth, Ciccone Youth, Morris Day and the Time, then I found this cool hand that the person let me have for free cuz they liked which CDs I picked. Took a moto ride with my homie to Kelly Point Park. I've never taken heroin but I think that is what it felt like. The sun worked. Then yesterday was just a total bliss-out followed by some light yard work. Helped my room mate excavate a back yard scene. Then we got burgers and fries. It kept being awesome. Then my friend said I got a new drum set want to jam. Then I walked over to my old house and we jammed in the basement. I got to play this cool organ that had all this knobs and a portamento strip. You touch it and it has matching tones. The bass keys have black majors and white minors, a reverse of the usual keyboard. There was a "Fuzz" knob I liked to put on. And I had a microphone. I was pretending I was in The Make-Up.
Bill Hicks sez Sing from the F****** heart: a special love song "Suicide by cop! The men in blue aim true. Was it quick and painless?" "Baby likes to ride through space. Her arm across my waist. Baby don't you worry, this ride can stop on a dime." "It's your dollar, you earned it, it's your right to burn it." "Hey everybody who wears pants, it's time to do a brand new dance... the pants dance."
Also, I would like to put in a plug for Wolf & Bear cart on Mississippi. I walked right up not for a delicious hot meal of Israeli food, but especially to buy their green sauce. They make a "hot" sauce which is cilantro based and sell it for $5 a jar. If cilantro doesn't taste like soap to you, I recommend this product to anyone who is in the neighborhood. I put a spoon of it on my rice and kim chee dinner, and wanted three spoonsful more.
Then my friend gave me a container of pickled mango from a restaurant they work at. This is a new Persian restaurant on Alberta.
What a weekend! Highlights included playing basketball twice on Saturday, "hiking" with Jessica and Calvin at the Audubon nature preserve (bonus: no dogs allowed (sorry lovers of dogs, but sensitive ecosystem, etc!)), and also coffee. And it is still nice enough now that I have my window at work open, and I'm enjoying the air and sounds of downtown Portland.
Did everyone have a great weekend? It felt like everyone was having a great weekend.
I played Pirate Laser Tag on Friday night, met a friend for coffee and studying Saturday morning, watched the Silverbacks play a 0-0 draw Saturday night, and had an awesome brunch (amazing deviled eggs and coca-cola ham among other delicious foods) on my friend's deck on Sunday.
Friday night I partied at a stinky dive on Hawthorne where White Fang was playing, and many homies of all stripes were seen and hugged. I played a lot of Big Buck Hunter, and discovered that it is the game of champions and kings and I want to play it every second of the day.
Sat. I slept in with a hangover, walked to a nice breakfast out with my boo, then fully got back into bed to watch tv and sleep. Even though the sun was out! Do-nothing day.
Sunday ruled them all. Pine State Biscuits were eaten in the park, a long walk was had and many flowers were smelled and photos taken. Saw some very funny dogs. I did the dumb work I had to bring home and do before today, and then caught the sunset with a buddy in my favorite Portland yard, where I have spent approx. 8 summers chillin'. We ate dinner, made jokes, and had more beers. SUMMER COME ON!!!!
Then I took a bath and read a book and it was all very wonderful. I loved it, the only thing missing was a nature excursion!
Friday I taught a great/crazy/exhausting class on Joanna Newsom with many wonderful fights and dust-ups. Then my old man and I walked to happy hour at Pizza Fino and got spaghetti and wine and walked back home in the fragrant dusk. Then we watched TV and went to bed. Saturday we worked all morning on our work. But then in the afternoon we TOOK CHARGE OF OUR LAWN!!!!! First time ever! Gary went and stole Steve's mower against his wishes; I went and bought a rake. Mowed and raked and weeds dug up and flowers, kale, carrots, beets, cilantro, and basil planted. We'll see how that goes. Scattered some poppy seeds all over hither and yon. The dog ate so much mowed grass. Saturday night I went to a murder mystery party and did not solve the murder, but again ate spaghetti and drank wine. Then played poker and my old man won all the money, enraging Steve again. TWO STEVE-ENRAGEMENTS IN ONE DAY; Gary better watch out!!! Yesterday we went to brunch with my parents, then went home and did our work, and then in the dusk we took the snoopy to the park where he played so hard with a nice bull terrier. Then I made an amazing dinner:
cauliflower seared and then steamed in lime juice, curry powder, and cilantro lentils with spicy red pepper and turmeric yogurt spinach salad olive ciabatta bread WHAT
Then we watched our stories and went to sleep. I dreamed the second verse to a song I am writing in real life with Katy but when I woke up I couldn't remember it.
Yes! And the grass is super long right now, and the cats are frolicking. I could probably make a whole series of (admittedly boring) photographs taken in that yard.
Mine was so great you guys. Wine and crabbing that led to wine and laughing with my friend who lives in the backyard on Friday evening. Then I went to class all of Saturday morning which you might think was a boo but was actually a yay. It's all about how to lead your staff toward a curricula infused with social justice themes. We planned professional developments that will lead our schools (and thus students) to a post- racist way of life! I left with very many hopeful feelings about the state of public education.
Saturday afternoon was so sunny and good! I drove to the Naturalizer outlet in Troutdale because I had a sweet coupon and got some real cute loafers for $14! Then I stopped by a 4 year old's birthday party at the Jantzen beach carousel, then met my BF for beers in the sun and a long walk.
Sunday was for lounging, reading magazines in bed with coffee while breakfast was prepared for me, then yardwork with LT and the BF and burgers and beer and later by myself with SNL and some light housework. Now my house and yard are so tidy and I love all of the people I know.
Gonna watch that ep on the flight home. Saturday I had a nice walk. Sunday I flew to San Francisco and found out that they are really into partying on Easter. Tons of people in crazy costumes (many Alice in Wonderland or Jesus/nun based) gathering in all the parks to hang out. I walked a ton of miles all over the place and had good convos with people who don't come to Portland.
YT, if you live within walking distance of pizza fino then you probably live in or near my (former) neighborhood!
We packed all weekend then left for Texas on Sunday morning. I drove all day and night non-stop and we got into Texas at about 9pm on Monday. As we crossed the Texas state line, a hail and thunderstorm enveloped us. It was like Texas was hazing us! It poured and slammed down on us and there was almost no visibility. Luckily we were behind a couple big trucks and we formed a convoy and just followed their taillights as they blazed the way. The storm died as soon as we got to the nearest town, Pecos. As we drove into town a tumbleweed blew across the road, I shit you not.
Also, the cops had closed the road going in the direction we just came from. Apparently we drove right by a tornado.
I drove for a few more hours but b/c of the lack of sleep my perception started to get weird. I said to my wife, "We've been going downhill for awhile" and she was like what are you talking about. Even when we were level or going uphill, it felt and looked like we were going down a hill to me. That's when I decided it might be a good idea to let my wife drive.
