Herzog

Just watched half of "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done?" last night. What a stinker!

Despite the involvement of Herzog, David Lynch (producer), Willem Dafoe, and Brad Dourif, and it being based on a true story about a man who reenacted Sophocles' Oresteia, it exposed all its flaws in a completely unenjoyable way. It was just so amazingly boring. I think it was made around the same time as Bad Lieutenant. In that movie, the humor of the film making style really works, but in "My Son," they take the story too seriously. It looks like a bad movie but not in a good way (staging, cameras, sound, acting, script). Willem Dafoe comes off looking like he belongs on the local playhouse stage, not charismatic in the least. At least Chloe Sevigny's costumes were interesting.

From doing one minute of research, it sounds like this project was 15 years in the making. So I'm guessing it was just way overworked. The true story is about a dude who starred in a local production of Oresteia, sworded his own mama..... then years and years later, is discovered with an "Aguierre: Wrath of God" shrine in his house. Sounds like a great movie, doesn't it?

All in all, I am glad to have a love-hate relationship to this living film maker, Werner H. Failure makes him more likeable?

  • Herzog's documentary about Antarctica is pretty miserable. He is definitely a maniac, who has reached the enviable position of being able to pretty much do anything he wants- like to to Antarctica or some deep Cave adventures, but he is outputting so much right now a lot of it does turn out pretty half-baked.

    Agreed, very half-baked.

Did you see the one that was made with the same footage from Antarctica, starring Brad Dourif as an alien from outer space? As he described his home planet, footage from the frozen sea and military base were used. I thought it was arresting in its simplicity.

Granted, I like that it is half-baked, in a way, because it gives me hope that I can surpass my idols.
  • How was the cave film? Missed.
  • I thought it was great. Watching a time warp with 3-D glasses was a total psychedelic experience. I am very enthusiastic about the subject matter... And thought that the director didn't make the interesting experts look too human and foolish. But being in the theater and travelling through the caves was incredible. Not sure how it translates to the flat screen.
  • I've heard that it is very boring on the flat screen. But in 3-D it was amazing! And normally I hate 3-D. When I took off my 3-D glasses a couple times it definitely wasn't as beautiful/entrancing.

  • One of the biggest regrets of my life is that I missed this movie in theaters. And it was in theaters for MONTHS AND MONTHS. I hate the part of myself who did not go see it for all that time. Ugh.
