Workin' Out: Real Talk

edited March 2012
Something they don't tell you about working out a lot is how TIRED you are going to be.

I sleep plenty, yet still so tired!! I might take a nap today at work.

  • It's cause you do it in the morning instead of at a reasonable hour. Say, 9pm? If you work out from 9-10:30pm, as I did last night, you can sauna then go home to bed after working out. Then you'll be so ready and fresh the next day.
  • I find the opposite to be true. When I run or workout before work, I feel better during the day.
  • Just took a LONG nap at work.

I've been tired since Sunday. Still tired now. I need pizza, no wait, COFFEE!

I heard that three days of exercise per week is optimum in terms of brain benefit.

    Confirm or deny?

P.s. What do you work on most, chest, arms, abdomen, or legs, and do you think it looks cool or not to have a strong neck
  • Three days per week is a good schedule. I have switched to mostly swimming, but I need to go back to also doing bench press, planks, and crunches, because I can tell swimming is not enough.

If your neck is too strong, you'll end up looking like this guy!

I don't think it looks that cool.

I do mostly cardio exercise, but I would like to work on my stomach more, because that's the flabbiest part.

Also, I have been really bad about doing yoga (ie not doing it at all) because it's such a pain to have to spend time on exercise AND yoga. I enjoy the benefits of doing body work, but it feels like a real waste of time when you count up the hours.
  • Too often overlooked: It is crucial to blog regularly about your exercise routine.
  • I think Hank looks bitchin.'
  • Stomach exercises don't target stomach fat. Just FYI.
  • That is a pretty big neck.
  • The exercises will hopefully build the abs and the swimming burns the fat.

Yuck, I hate a thick gym rat neck. Makes you look like you're a) not very smart, and b) mean.
  • GET IN THE VAN
  • I like that guy in the photograph.

    I run sometimes.

I feel sluggish when I don't. I agree with curt.

YT et al have oft waxed on about the full body ripping benefits of the push ups.
  • My exercise routine is getting off the bus a few stops earlier
  • Yes, MZ - my goal is to have the cardio (in conjunction with a better diet) burn the fat and the exercise build the muscle.
  • PUSH UP IS SO RIPPING. I try to do pushups often, even if I don't do anything else.

Yoga IS exercise, MZ, if you're doing it right/wholeheartedly/for 45 minutes. Full on cardio heart-pounding sweat-blast.

I feel the opposite of tired when I am working out. Super energized and alive! What's going on with you Mikey? HMMMMMMM I WONDER IF IT IS THE WEIRD SPEED POWDERS YOU ARE TAKING
  • Yoga is good cardio for sure, but I also have to do a bunch of weights to get bigger.
  • I'm going to start running today! I bought a couch to 5k app that will tell me exactly what to do- that's great because I need to be bullied into exercise or I get real half-assed about it (see: "I'll just do some yoga in my living room and save money!") Apparently a pleasant voice will cut into the music from time to time and tell me when to go from walk to jog and when I'm at the halfway point of my workout and stuff like that. I'm excited to get bossed around. The only thing I'm not excited about is jogging in the rain. But thems the breaks.

I'm going to follow the regiment for two weeks in my old athletic shoes and if I stick to it I'll reward myself with some fancy running shoes from Fit RIght NW (too bad I missed that sale!!) Wish me luck!
  • Jogging in the rain is awesome!! You get so wet and steamy, and then you get home feeling all tired and great and soggy, blowing like a horse, and hop in the hot hot shower. Lovely!

  • A solid adult beverage or beer in the shower after jogging is the best.
  • I think I'm using the same app, Wanda. I like it a lot, now I just need to get off my butt and do it more than once a week!
  • I liked it! The lady bossing me around was British- so perfect for this anglophile. I felt that the intensity level was just right for me and I'm actually excited to run again tomorrow!

  • This thread is inspiring.

I didn't have to work this morning so it would have been easy to sleep in. But I didn't! I got up at 6:00 a.m. and hit the treadmill with the bossy British lady. Now I feel great!

  • How did that ad ever get made?!
  • I just went to the gym, got home, made a SuperSmoothie™, and then did pushups!

    I FEEL GREAT!
  • Yesterday I went on a long run and today my arms are as worn out as my legs.
  • Two days in a row at the gym y'all HUH???
    Pretty good
Been listening to comedy podcasts instead of music. It's less motivating but more interesting.
Kind of would like to get to know the mean british lady but I'll never be that technologically souped-up, ALAS
  • (i have that (older) iPhone for you!)
  • What gym do people like and why?
    Cool amenities?
Bonus points for not being crowded?
  • I use West Coast Fitness. It is awesome.
    Tons of machines
Tons of classes, yoga and otherwise, all just covered by the same normal monthly gym membership payment
discount for teachers and for paying full year at once
    sauna
    steam room
tons of extras like fitness balls laying around, and mats for stretching
ZEN RELAXATION ROOM with sun lamp and water massager!!!!!
AND, West Coast Fitness is the same company as Videorama. So you work out, then you're feeling like treating yourself, so you pick up REAL STEEL on the way out
  • p.s. Mike when will I get my new old phone!?
    How I long for it
I really could've used it on my recent trip. I thought about it many times. "I wish I had Mike's old phone...."

How long will I own it before I will think of it as mine? maybe never. Can you please engrave your own name on it so I will never forget
  • "Been listening to comedy podcasts instead of music. It's less motivating but more interesting."

Agreed. Time moves faster listening to music, but this is the only time I can listen to comedy podcasts and not feel like I should be doing something else.
  • Damn, West Coast Fitness is deeply inconvenient for me.
    :(

I live in SE, what about anybody that works out in NE?
  • I recently got a membership at the Green Microgym on NE Alberta.

    * http://albertapdx.thegreenmicrogym.com/

Think it's a little more pricey than some of the bigger names, has less equipment, no pool, no racquetball courts, and they rely on you to help generate power. ...However, when I go in the morning, it's usually fairly empty, quiet, and they don't have anybody working there. I have a combination to the front door, turn on the lights, work out, and it's only a 4-5 minute walk from my apartment. I quite like it.
  • Owls, you're not too far from the Lloyd area, right? If you want to swim, LA Fitness is ok. If you don't care about swimming, I'd say Lloyd Athletic Club is better.
  • I might like to swim?

I've heard Lloyd Athletic is a real social scene- constant running into acquaintances? Ehhhhhhh
  • I liked Lloyd Athletic, but other than the peak times when all gyms are busy I love that LA Fitness is SOOOOO big and empty.
  • I'm just a little bitter about LA Fitness because it's been on a gradual decline ever since I joined. They chip away at the good points each year. Wouldn't it be nice to belong to something that got *better*?
  • I love the Lloyd, wish it had a pool. The classes are good. There are a lot of old ladies and tons of racquetball dads, which I like. Approx. 20 percent indie rockers/alternakids.

Eric Mast is a member of Loprenzi's, which is hilarious and very keep it weird/working class.

I was going to go to the gym tonight but I got tired after working a very long day and torrented that black metal documentary and read part of "You Will Make Money In Your Sleep" (shouts out to DrJ) instead.
  • This is extra funny to me, because Alex sent me a message that indicated that he was basically "on his way out the door" and headed to the gym.
  • I did my second run in the sunshine yesterday! I feel I should note that the British lady bossing me around is not mean per se- she's encouraging in a restrained way and firm. I might be falling for her!
  • Zuck - I was literally 10 seconds from that, then I was like unnnnngh no I can't I'll just watch this black metal documentary instead.

    So much for willpower :(

Maybe see you there tonight though?
  • Gonna get wet tonight for sure.
  • Muscles in my back are sore in that cool way where I didn't even notice I had those muscles until this morning and I was like, "Ooooh... that hurts nice."
  • Went for two short, flat hikes over the weekend and felt a little sore. GET IN SHAPE, LADY!

Gym last night, plan to go again tonight. 20 minutes elliptical, 30-40 minutes weights and machines.

YWMMIYS parenthesis: Ha! I should look at that thing again one of these days. I gave the author a version of the manuscript with literally hundreds of post-it note corrections that were all ignored (with testy vigor!)

It's a fun read, but O my god. I hate the fictional character in that book that is named after me. It's like a Star Trek episode (or Family Circle cartoon?) with a wicked, celebrity obsessed version of myself running around making mischief. Hmmm. Wonder why that marriage didn't work out..... ?

Meanwhile, my (factually accurate) version will be called You Will Lose Money In Your Sleep....

Moving boxes, packing trucks, scrubbing, unpacking trucks.... for exercise!
  • Is Loprenzi's up high in SE somewhere? I think I was a member there like 10 years ago. Joined with Jason Anderson, then we broke up and I stole his workout card which was a window into his madness. This gym is awesome. Total working class keeping-it-real vibe. Very very mellow and grubby but has everything you need, including nice little sunshine courtyard for sun tanning.
