I love UHX

edited January 2012
You know what? I love it here. I don't post a lot and when I do it's generally to adamantly agree with something someone said two pages ago- I generally check UHX while my students are putting their supplies away or lining up or whatever and I don't have time to draft a thoughtful response to anything. Or sometimes I'll try to draft a thoughtful or impassioned response to something when I have a longer break- say the kids are at recess- but then get interrupted and by the time I come back to it someone else on the board has already said what I wanted to say but way more eloquently and so I delete my draft and post something like, "YES!" I sometimes kill threads this way. :/

BUT! Despite my middling contributions to the board I am an avid reader and I just love it so much! I love an all caps argument about TV! I love learning about birth control methods! I love knowing what the SSOTD is, even when I can't listen to it right away! I love when people post obscure technical questions and get satisfactory answers! I LOVE when Gary and Sarah McDoogan stop by! I love it when some random person joins and clogs up all the threads which is annoying but also endearing sometimes depending on the person. Sometimes that person sticks around and becomes a super rad member of the board! Sometimes they get booed off the board. I love that!

I spend all day every day with children and it is SO NICE to pop in here throughout the day and hear what adults are talking about. Adults I like! Talking about bikes and politics and pizza and other stuff! It's great here.

Thanks for building this, Steve, Mike and Jona, and thanks for keeping it alive, Matthew and Curt. And thanks everyone else for posting so many cute pictures of your cats and dogs even though they all make me want to barf. UHX makes my life more fun.

  • This makes me wish we still had the polling option so I could make a poll of Who Was Your Favorite Random Board Clogger.

Thanks to everybody as well for keeping this board alive.
  • YES!!!

Strongly agree with everything Wanda said!!!

UHX was a major reason I stayed sane throughout grad school. Like, replace Wanda's statements about dealing with children with "dealing with graduate students" and it is the same exact sentiment. PEOPLE IN THE OTHER WORLD, TALKING ABOUT STUFF ASIDE FROM GENDER THEORY!!! BUT ALSO GENDER THEORY SOMETIMES
  • Favorite Random Board Clogger! Somebody make that poll quick!

recently my discipline's list-serv became clogged by a weird undergraduate who somehow got subscribed and who began writing multiple enormous rants every day about how everyone needed to be armed and President Obama is a Nazi. It was so surreal. And all the responses on the list serv were like "who is this? what is happening?" because everyone on that list serv is, like, a 70 year old man who wrote an important book about Brahms. It was SO CONFUSING AND FUNNY.

  • "Thanks for building this, Steve, Mike and Jona, and thanks for keeping it alive, Matthew and Curt."

HEY COMEON SOMEBODY ELSE ALSO HELPED DESIGN THE NEW URHO AND DID CSS/HTML/WORDPRESS STUFF AND HELPS KEEP STUFF RUNNING

    #feelingsslightlyhurtbutnotreally

    NONETHELESS, UHX IS AWESOME!
  • I dunno guys, I'm kinda over it.

Except for the snoopy pics. I like the snoopys.

Wanda, you are a mindreader...I also have been meaning to send out an "I <3 UHX" message to the universe. This board and the generally-but-not-entirely consistent collection of people on it are so important to me! Like, in a way that is in some ways similar to how you feel about family - you aren't specifically affiliated because you are like each other, but just because this is the community, and it belongs to you, and you belong to it, and you know it will always be there, and there's something reassuring and comfortable about being there. Thanks everybody who works so hard at making this community what it is. Your hard work is definitely appreciated.

Huge shootout to Matthew, Curt, and Alex who have done so much to keep this place around over the last handful of years.

  • Whoops, did I say Alex? I meant to not include him.
How do I do a strikethrough?
Anyone know? Alex, do you know?
  • Haha!
    Thanks, Alex

    ALEX STRIKETHROUGH
  • Feeling sentimental thinking about the old board design!

Thanks to all the lurkers for reading our posts.

    !!
ALEX STRIKES AGAIN! DID YOU SEE WHAT HE DID?!?!?!?!?!?!?
  • I only hate you because I love you UHX.
  • Whoops! Sorry to leave you out, A**x! I know you code until your knuckles bleed for us! Sorry for the inadvertent omission!

    (P.S. Guys- who's Alex?)
  • THREE STRIKES, WANDA!

(Alex can you strikethrough those strikes? Also that last strike?)

    Alex is dirty dirty dirty.

    UHX lives!

    What Wanda said.

    And L_G.

sometimes when I am writing a comment alex hacks into the window and starts typing it's so weird like a ghost...... at least, I THINK it's alex!!!

    *shiver*
  • Totally feeling this right now. Please accept my belated thanks, you all.
  • seriously this board comprises a large portion of my social life
  • Yup. And I like it.
  • For me it's this board and my Harley club.
  • Kinda spooky how important and good it is to me. Thanks you all. Thanks founder guys and firstline technical helpers.
  • I was telling my significant other yesterday about how important UHX is to my social life. I really like everyone here.

I think about board life when I'm having the rest of my life (off the board). And, seems like maybe three times a day I'm telling someone about something that got posted here.

And just 'randomly' yesterday, I found myself wondering about that dude that was here for a while and then deleted all his posts with sarcastic 'nice' words. I just noticed Ed's call to discuss favorite board cloggers above. That character definitely made an impression. Seemed like (he?) was trying to make a connection but it just didn't work, or it hadn't worked yet, and then he got frustrated and flipped out. I missed whatever he said to Freddy. Anyway, his departure was kind of spectacular and cast a kind of enigmatic, tragic shimmer to his entire career here. It was interesting enough that I guess I found/find myself still wondering.

Brent/Gen Y guy, though was the best. He should get a bronze plaque or something.

Also, tech team: really? We can't have polls anymore? Ever? Did they break things?

It's ok, though. Not complaining. Just - you know - saying.

    LOVE, dRJ

There was that guy way back in ... 2003? 2004? who was all religious/pro-life and picked some fights here on that topic. IIRC it was a crossover from the KRECS board? UHX'ers were not into that.
  • DrJ the funny thing about that one guy was that he tried to give Freddy a hard time for not being hardcore enough of a biker. He didn't know that she is a bike hero.
Sorry to embarrass you J but it was too rich.
  • Brent takes the cake. GAWD BLESS HIM.
Funnest two days of the internet maybe ever.
  • Yeah Gen Y guy shall live in infamy.

Also "Vicki," who I still believe was some sort of ironic character one of you was playing

Who else has there been? I feel like there've been some other True Characters but now can't think of them.

Gary, of course. Patron Saint of Weird Lurkers

  • Here is something neat our friend bookhouseboyP did:

    http://www.couriercoffeeroasters.com/wordpress/?p=1392

I think if he could have gotten past his strange need to be anonymous and ditched some of the habits he brought to UHX from lulz-ier forums, things would have gone better.

I'm willing to bet he still reads posts.
  • Is his name M***ael? I think I internet stalked him once based on the few personal tidbits he spilled here. ^_^

    I bet he liked it
  • Ha ha. Followed your link and affirmed my hunch.

That said, it is hard to be a geek and make new friends. We are all really lucky geeks B-F

How well I remember the school lunchroom! All those open tables, but not a one welcome to a geek! (And geeks are the worst hazers of all)
  • Aw, don't make me blush, LT. It was kind of funny, though. In my head I was saying, "Seriously?! BRING IT, dude, because I will crush your bike cred." I'm a nerd. It's like every nerd's dream to be challenged in your particular area of expertise.
  • I liked bookhouseboy! But he surely did not know what he was getting into, bringing an attempted bike superiority into a tussle with freddy.

  • I liked bhboy too! And I bought one of those cozies and sent it to LA friend Meagan Yellot.

    Canelés look mighty good.

I think I'll stalk that shop next time I AM IN PORTLAND (officially). I'll stand in the shop, staring absently into the middle distance and say, "bunnies", "poodles","muffins","rainbows","kittens","flowers"....

Maybe we can do it as a team sport? I have a feeling someone will take home a token. Keep ya posted!

yeah like if being a muffin nerd was a competition me and owls would git that tag
and by muffins I mean bunnies, poodles, muffins, rainbows, kittens, and flowers ^_^
