Pope

Can't believe this pope thing! First pope to resign in 600 years!
Kevin, what does Hugh say???

Why would he resign? He can't just be tired. And nobody cares if the pope dies--I mean, he's SUPPOSED to die in office, it's not like a president. So what gives?

Did he just not want to learn about Twitter?

  • the last pope to resign was Gregory XII who resigned so that the Great Schism could end. What's Benedict's excuse?????
  • Another pope named Celestine apparently abdicated in the 1200s. His reason:

”the desire for humility, for a purer life, for a stainless conscience, the deficiencies of his own physical strength, his ignorance, the perverseness of the people, his longing for the tranquility of his former life”

    THAT IS HARD CORE

    whoa!!!!!

" Pope Benedict XVI has recently aligned himself with the memory and legacy of the hermit pope from the medieval Catholic past. On April 29, 2009, when Pope Benedict visited Celestine’s tomb in the aftermath of the earthquake that struck L’Aquila earlier in the month, he did more than say a simple prayer and pay his respects at the Italian saint’s shrine. Without explanation the pope paused for several minutes, removed the pallium from around his shoulders, and laid it gently on Celestine’s glass-encased Tomb. A pallium is a religious garment that is shaped like a Y and resembles a long, stiff scarf. It is one of the principal symbols of a

pope’s episcopal authority. It seems that Pope Benedict was communicating that something lies unfinished in the worldwide Catholic Church, and it is somehow connected with Celestine V."

  • I heard he wants to focus on his music career.
  • It's cause Lil B said "No Pope" in that one song and also on Twitter a couple of times:

  • I kind of feel not great like there is some horrific scandal.
  • ON TO THE NEXT ONE.
Last time everyone thought the new pope would be from Central/South America or maybe Africa so I hope that happens.
Newer more liberal pope, please. Less Nazi pope.
  • "I just didn't enjoy Popeing, straight up."

  • I agree with Matthew. Something just feels not-right about this.
  • maybe he didn't realize how much of his job would entail talking graphically about pedophilic rape
  • The Pope is becoming much less powerful in the world.
    Right?
  • lets hope so

I mean, he's certainly less powerful than when, like, he controlled the most powerful army in all of the world and Kings and Emperors had to do whatever he said. It's all downhill from here!

Wouldn't it be amazing if Benedict abdicated and then they were like "you know what? we're done, no more popes"
  • THERE ARE STILL A BILLION CATHOLICS YOU GUYS

    That stat blew my mind.
  • They should get a really chill Youth Pastor type dude like Pastor Chad
  • what if they elected a black gay Jewish lady
  • "New Pope says church will focus on boogie board ministry"
  • Pope Jayden the 1st
  • Pope Justin the Just

    Pope Courtney
  • Apparently there's a Canadian cardinal is 7 to 2 odds to be the next Pope.

"Cardinal Marc Ouellet of Canda is 7-2 from @BovadaLV to be next #Pope."
Tweet by ESPN poker gambling guru, Chad Millman
  • I heard Benedict just didn't like all the deep Satanic rituals he didn't know were going to be part of the job.
  • Hugh is chaperoning 30 kids on a community service trip this week, so I do not have access to his knowledge on all matters related to Catholicism.

I love that Ratzinger was like "I recognize my incapacity." Yeah, so did the rest of us, buddy!
  • I think that there was a turning point with Ratzinger. American Catholics adored JP2, but were totally comfortable ignoring him on stuff like birth control. Under Benedict, the vibe seemed to be more begrudging respect for the office, not love for the dude.
  • He will get to have more influence over his successor than if he got out of office because of death. Partly it could be that desire to direct things.
  • But isn't the Pope chosen by GOD? The Pope shouldn't be allowed to quit... I mean, GOD PICKED HIM!
  • it does raise the fascinating question of whether or not God continues to directly communicate with an abdicated pope. The whole point of the pope is that he is God's interlocutor on earth; he is God's chosen megaphone, whom God speaks through. Does this mean God has changed his mind, and now his voice will go silent in Ratzinger's ear? Which you'd think would be devastating, until you remember it's all just made-up bullshit.

Or if he does keep talking to Ratzinger what about the new pope? Does he tell them conflicting things?

Does this mean GOD TOLD RATZINGER to abdicate, and, if so, was that a bummer?

  • Hugh has texted me; he thinks it's related to the Mahoney thing, which seems to go all the way up to the Vatican.
  • what's the Mahoney thing? I assume it is a child rape scandal but WHICH ONE
  • LA Cardinal Roger Mahoney covered up stuff, was rebuked, stripped of some duties--but still gets to help pick new Pope!
  • It's hard out there for a pope.

I wouldn't hold out much hope for a liberalizing Catholic church, y'all. They seem to be entrenching and getting way more evil and politically savvy. This article from The Stranger does a great job of portraying the nearly-invisible shift in the Catholic institution towards pouring parishioners' money into hardcore right wing social politics. Chilling.
