I've noticed lately that I am developing "asker" skills in my work life (which can of course transfer to personal life). I used to be a pure guesser... but I noticed the difference between me and the co-workers I admired is that they would always press forward and not take no for an answer. Now I see it as a range of negotiation. I like to mix in "guessing" style, which I think is about seeing someone else's point of view and understanding what their job is/needs are, with some of the pressing "ask" behavior. Context is everything as usual...
