Spam Prevention

edited January 2013
Hey all, we've been getting hit with a LOT of spam accounts on UHX lately.

We're going to turn off the automatic approval of new UHX accounts for a bit and Matthew is going to look at some plugins for solving the problem.

One thing I thought about was instituting a metafilter-like system of a one-time payment of $5 for a UHX account. Small amount we'd all be happy to pay, but much too high to be worth paying to spam or troll or whatever:

"Although membership was initially free and unrestricted, growing membership forced frequent extended closures of new-member signup. On November 18, 2004, Haughey reopened signups, but with a 5 USD life-time membership fee. According to Time magazine, this fee keeps the site "remarkably free of trolls, griefers and other anonymous jerks", resulting in a "public-spirited flavor of a small town or good university". wikipedia
