Hey all, we've been getting hit with a LOT of spam accounts on UHX lately.
We're going to turn off the automatic approval of new UHX accounts for a bit and Matthew is going to look at some plugins for solving the problem.
One thing I thought about was instituting a metafilter-like system of a one-time payment of $5 for a UHX account. Small amount we'd all be happy to pay, but much too high to be worth paying to spam or troll or whatever:
"Although membership was initially free and unrestricted, growing membership forced frequent extended closures of new-member signup. On November 18, 2004, Haughey reopened signups, but with a 5 USD life-time membership fee. According to Time magazine, this fee keeps the site "remarkably free of trolls, griefers and other anonymous jerks", resulting in a "public-spirited flavor of a small town or good university". wikipediaThoughts?
Comments
There are currently 1652 accounts. And like 90% are spam.
I WILL ERASE THEM ALL.
Alex, Matthew, etc. Feel free to deny applicants. SHUT THEM ALL DOWN!
let's go karaoke or something?

A TOTAL ECLIPSE OF MY BLOG! Etc
Sally will be like
she rules her life like a bird in flight and wouldn't you love to blog her
"Bloggin Nathan,
You type so fly,
Bloggin' Nathan,
Don't get me high..."
UrbanHonking is not MetaFilter. It's much smaller. What instituting a fee means is basically we close off UHX from any new person every coming in because what new person would pay? I wouldn't.
Also, since the most exciting discussion in the last few weeks around here has been the spam I don't think this is good thing.
@KmikeyM I think I found a good plugin to bulk edit users
They want to post links on UHX because we have some sort of SEO value... maybe if we aren't doing a pay to play system we should toss up some Google Ads in the sidebar?
he's threatening you
ADDITIONALLY I think we should have a party, independently of this other issue.
thank you
So, we have proposed:
1. We collect some money.
and
2. We should have a party.
Now we need to form some committees to run these new initiatives!
This was my dating strategy for years.
No to: charging fee for membership
The simple act of having to fill out a payment screen seems like the real deterrent.
and, OBVIOUSLY, all these new accounts aren't really spammers but in fact folks reacting to the news of this upcoming party in Wanda's pants. I mean, who doesn't want to party in Wanda's pants? we're lucky a riot has broken out- it's like Black Friday trying to get into Wanda's pants!!!
We're doing it. KILL THEM ALL.
We're really doing it.
