All Rants

edited June 2012
No one ever says, “I hate Las Vegas because it reminds me of myself,” but that is what I am hearing.

Why am I seeing so many .jpgs of photos of art inside of white rooms? I thought this was the internet. Show me the art that is on the internet.
  • I was watching this documentary yesterday, and all the "cool creative" people had the same white rooms with full bookshelves of memorabilia (and books). Sometimes it seems like you're required to live that way if you want to be a "modern professional" or something.

I guess what I am ranting against is fetishizing art galleries, rather than the art itself. The whole point of the internet is that it is a space of no space, just image. I guess this represents the people's desire for context. IMO the context is the internet, its nearest physical metaphor being the printed page.
  • Right, when I was writing my comment I felt like I couldn't properly explain what I meant, but it has to do with that fetishizing of art galleries spilling over into living spaces. We have to live, work, and display in ultra-modern galleries.
  • ATTACHMENT PARENTING
  • BUT, if that is the only way for me to access a lot of art because I can't go see it in person I would still like to see the installation shots as well as a digital image of the piece.

Lots of art, EVEN PHOTOGRAPHY I WOULD ARGUE LOUDLY, has power and content as an object in space and not just a flat plane.

that being said, the gallery as a fetishized zone is grody.
  • That Baffler piece is a great rant indeed! I am now a dedicated fan of that author!
  • My new neighbor being gluten-free AND vegan. PICK ONE FOR GODS SAKE. I have been wanting to bake her something to say welcome, but you know what? Fuck it.
  • Hahaa! Wow!

Parents of difficult children who don't thank their teachers at the end of the year.
  • That Baffler rant is EPIC
  • Opens by calling writers "unctuous little scabs..." I like it!
  • The parents' ingratitude is probably a sign of what makes them a shitty parent.
  • whatever this lady is trying to tell me, IM NOT FUCKING LISTENING

  • Dudes who say they can't pay 5 frickin dollars for a therapy session, then spend therapy session talking about all the dinner parties and bars and restaurants they went to over the past week. AND THEN act really condescending like I should be embarrassed to be working at a low-cost clinic trying to help people. Get out of my office, jerk.
  • $5!! Seriously.
  • Yeah, I am in the process of writing a long rant for my work blog about how much that woman and her terrible schtick annoys me and makes things worse for musicians (in addition to coopting the artists' rights cause).
  • (even though I think Kickstarter can be a good tool, it is not the future of music unless you are a major label refugee like her)
  • Is that Miranda July?
  • that photograph is brutal
  • Jherek played on her record so it will probably sound good (until she opens her mouth)
  • I just posted a rant on the advice blog! I will probably get a lot of hate mail
  • perpetual silent ranting

someone hates "moshing for no reason"
  • I have the text if it ceases to exist. Cached in my brain. (and my computer)
  • It's stupid to have a meeting start at 8:00 am on a weekend in the summer
    (my boss's rant)
  • i'll probably repost it
  • On the other hand it's nice when a parent of a difficult kid brings you a fifty dollar bill tucked into a homemade Aloha card and recommends a great restaurant in Maui.

(Perhaps this comment belongs in a different thread.)
  • the good only makes the lousy suck more by comparison, so... maybe it fits PERFECTLY
  • YT you should repost it. I read it on the train on the way home and it made my day (which needed to be made). I want to link to it.
  • Ok I reposted

we should all rant as much as possible. i think its time.
have any of you read the last part of henry miller's tropic of cancer?
its like maybe 50 to 100 page rant
it was cool to skip thru all the whore fucking and get to that point in the book and be like
"oh cool this book doesnt completely suck"
    anyway
if it isnt time to wail, i dunno when it will be
and fuck it, we got the pixels, digi ink is cheap
    have at it

    anyway, thank you for ranting

    a

  • Why is it good for all of us to rant as much as possible?

I'm not saying it's not, i just found this statement interesting and was interested in the thought behind it.

Everyone ranting = bad signal to noise ratio?
  • Well... it's funny, but I had written YT an email earlier expressing the same sentiment.

It is about expressing our frustration that things are not OK.
So it is good to rant sometimes.
If we didn't rant we might come to accept things as they are. Things are, of course, a mix of good and bad, but by identifying the bad, we can come closer to alleviating its ills.
  • Keep ranting Everybody

    Please Post your Rants
  • Here is a weird rule I have. When there is a de*d person in a movie, I look away/cover with hand. Do not want!
  • I don't agree that ranting all the time is a good thing. I think a well-chosen rant can be a remarkable outlet and source of community togetherness and collective rage-expression (example: The French Revolution was at least in part started by a couple good rants). But ranting all the time just turns you into a sick twisted Rush Limbaugh esque figure. There is good in the world too.

I do love a good rant though.

Alan that is so funny about Tropic of Cancer because I obviously tried to read that book and was just disgusted in a Kerouacian way, like, "of course this book would be 'a classic,' it's all about whore fucking, what a piece of shit" and I put it down before the end rant!!! Maybe I'll try it again.
  • when you fight good fights
    and live in good cheer
and bolster up your brother man
but the day becomes weary nonetheless
& the factors of great things combine to bind you
and keep you from the cookie jar
    nose to the grind stone
    or at least confused
it feels good to know you're not the only one with open wounds

  • sorry i was just watching a bunch of gbv video footage on youtube
  • I hate when a good rant turns into a tirade or tedious jeremiad....
  • Where do you stand on diatribes?
