You guys, France just elected the socialist candidate, François Hollande! (My friends tell me that in France "socialist" pretty much means center) There might be some hope for the world! I am clapping. Woo!
I've only talked only talked to a few French friends and they are all livid. I never totally understood Sarkozy. He always seemed like France's black eye.
When Hugh was in Greece he said he saw tons of homes without roofs, because you can avoid paying property taxes if you don't have a totally finished roof. So there are just all of these houses where people enjoy the nice climate and live without roofs and never have to pay!
Maybe progressive Dems will gain ground in 2014. Meanwhile, Dem congressional leadership (Pelosi, et al) seems to be playing along with Repub BS about cuts to Social Security and "reducing the deficit".
Hard to imagine much of a change in our electoral politics without structural reforms like free media and/or publicly financed elections. Highly uncertain whether popular protests will have an impact on fiscal policy short of armed insurrection, even then, things would be likely to get weirder, not better.
I suppose it is possible that anti-austerity policies in Europe could spark a change in US policy consensus, (Chicago School declares surrender. Krugman was right!) but I'm not holding my breath.
