SNARKOUT BOYS! Such a great, great book. I would recommend all of the Daniel Pinkwaters, they had an excellent effect on me as a kid.
I have refrained from jumping in to this discussion because I read books way beyond my grade level from a very tender age so maybe my calibration is skewed, plus so many good suggestions already! Terebithia! Secret of Nimh! Bunnicula! Basil E. Frankweiler! Wrinkle in Time!
How about Lois Lenski? I really enjoyed Strawberry Girl, and Indian Captive: The Story of Mary Jemison (based on a true story where she chooses to stay with the tribe who adopted her!!!). Her illustrations are lovely as well.
Tripod series by John Christopher (first book is The White Mountains) are excellent sf for younger readers, I was deeply into these.
Graphic Novels! Mai:A Teenaged Girl is hella good, also what about Sandman?
When I was younger my parents always had story time before bed with me and we would read all sorts of things. I distinctly remember Mem Fox's picture story books, Goosebumps, The Artimis Foul series by Eoin Colfer, The Chronicles of Narnia, Roald Dahl, Tamora Pierce's everything and later on everything by David Eddings. Not all are necessarily for young kids but my parents let me read pretty widely/didn't restrict my reading based on what was considered the right thing to read at particular ages.
The Tomorrow Series by John Marsden are definitely a riveting read for the youth age bracket. In them a band of teenagers go camping in the outback only to return to their town and find it captured by unknown military forces. So they kind of fight guerilla warfare style to recapture it. It's definitely a riveting adrenaline pumping story that spans seven books. I would have read it when I was 14/15. I only bring it up because I'm keen to read them again!
