Best Phone?

edited December 2011
my beloved, six year old Samsung mobile phone has finally died. it had been submerged in the Willamette, lost in foreign countries, and dropped too many times to count. It was the best free phone money could buy in 2005. But its time has come.

SO- i suppose it's time for me to finally move into the SMART PHONE ERA. but what is the best phone to get? when i say best i mean what is the cheapest phone that will do what i need. a couple years ago I would have bought an iPhone without a second thought. but Apple has disappointed me so many times recently I am completely open to 'switching sides.'

i will pretty much only use my phone to check email and look at maps. and use it as a phone.

PLEASE HELP ME SMART PEOPLE OF UHX

  • I like my phone. Android/4G.

    http://galaxy-s.t-mobile.com/samsung-galaxy-s2

Takes nice HD movies. Terrible microphone though.
  • so, it actually looks like the best phone is the free one from the company that really really doesn't want to lose you as a customer!
  • IPhone

Embrace the future with open arms. Each has it's own flaws, but the iphone rules supreme.
  • I am a total cheapo. The best phone/carrier for me is Virgin Mobile, unlimited text/data + 300 mins per month for $35/month. I bought the cheapest Android smartphone they carry (mine was LG Optimus for $150; I have no performance complaints but it's pretty limited in the # of apps it can handle), but they have a wide range of phone options. No contract, no initiation costs. I don't expect you to go for this - nobody ever does when they have pretty and stylish iPhones whispering sweet nothings in their ears - but for me it has absolutely been the right solution. (And don't hate me, but I'm actually grandfathered in at $25/month...)
  • I have an unlocked/haxxored iPhone 3G on a pay monthly (no contract) thing on T-Mobile for $50 a month. Unlimited texts/data/calls.

The phone is pretty buggy, but I'm generally happy with my cheaper, no-contract option.

The iPhone 4S is definitely the "best" phone, hands down, in terms of performance/speed/camera/apps/options/being able to harass Siri/user interface, but you'll pay AT&T/Verizon quite a bit of money (at least $80 a month for text/mins/limited data) for a similar package.

I haven't used the latest Android phones, but I hear they're pretty rad.
  • grandfathered in is the key! i was all ready to go iphone but thought i'd give the company i have been with for the past 10 years a final chance to convince me to stay- and that they did. so much so that i had to promise the person who made me the offer that i wouldn't go around talking about it! so i'll just say that i got a $299 phone for free and will be saving $40 a month compared to the iphone plan i was looking at getting.LOYALTY PAYS!

i will use the money i save to embrace the future in other ways. plus i am so disillusioned with apple i am no longer convinced they are the future. someone, sooner or later, is going to knock them off- their arrogance has gone haywire.
  • *i also still don't really trust myself with expensive phones. i drop them in rivers way too often.
  • Bigmac, I am sincerely interested in what your problems with Apple are.

I've been really happy with all of the computers I've bought from them/used since 1999, and OS X is so much better, stable, and usable than any operating system out there. I couldn't imagine switching back to Windows or trying to use Ubuntu or something.

The closed ecosystem of iOS/the App store certainly presents its own set of problems/ideological issues, but aside from that, I don't have a huge problem with the hardware or software that they've been creating for the last decade.

i loved apple with all my heart until a couple years ago. i own macs now, and over the years there probably isn't a single company that has received more of my money.

what they are doing with the distribution of music and movies is creepy and really bad for said industries.

but it's what they did to final cut pro that broke my heart.
  • Oh yes, I heard about that Final Cut Pro shit. My condolences.
  • I saw a guy at the Chelsea Anthroplogie with a Windows Phone 7 phone.
  • grandfathered in is awesome. I have a crazy tmobile "unlimited loyalty" package that is like $60 a month and I get everything unlimited all the time. Calls, texts, etc. I haven't worried about "going over my minutes" since like 2001. Given, I do not have a smartphone or a data plan but I like to think if I called up tmobile they'd help a dog out. And if not, I would get an iPhone and say FUCK YOU! My loyalty goes exactly only up to the point of no longer getting cool shit.
  • the last time I called tmobile the guy had to like go find a different computer that could access the original customer data system because my contract was so old

  • I have an AT&T iPhone 3Gs I would gladly give for FREE to @bigmacattack or @YoursTruly

HA- i am in the same boat as YT. old school VoiceStreamers from back in the day.

thanks for the offer Mikey, but I think I'm set. this Android will get me were i want to be (on the phone, checking email, looking at maps, and spending less than $70 a month for unlimited everything). i have been hesitant to even get a smart phone, so this should do me just fine. you can text me updates about the future!
  • The system that maintains YT's customer contract:

    image
  • YT, if you ever want data on T-Mobile, there is a "pay monthly" plan that is $50 a month for unlimited texts, calls, and data! It's pretty crazy. http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/monthly-4g-plans

Wait, isn't that cheaper than your current plan which *doesn't* have data?
  • I am scared to switch to prepaid!

Maybe I will call Tmobile and see if they will send me a smartphone and a new monthly contract

(*note: I obviously will not actually do this because I am incredibly lazy)

  • YT

I had the same phone for 9 years, that thing was an AMAZING little brick, by the last year I was having to go into the guts of the machine and reprogram it some times...the tech guy on the phone would just start laughing when I would state the make & model. It was such a great phone. I am still in awe of the battery.
  • i'd be curious to know at what point producing 'disposable' cell phones became the norm. those first generation phones were tanks.
  • I think as people start to switch more it became less important to build them to last.
  • YT
60 bucks for a plan without data is not that great, i hate to tell you.
    :(
  • Also,
I don't think the build quality has changed.
Some people are good at keeping their things a long time
    and others are not.
I never had a tank because I'm bad at it.

boats is right. i was paying something like $45 a month for unlimited voice and text before "making the jump"

    image
    BUILT TO LAST!
  • oh crap, maybe I will take that free iPhone after all

    WHAT AM I DOING?
  • Those first few weeks are kind of awkward when your phone is smarter than you are. It knows stuff that you don't know (like how to run itself.) Tones happen and screens and stuff. Eventually it mellows out and you can be friends.

    Just saying.
  • If neither @bigmacattack or @yourstruly take you up on your offer, Mikey, I will consider paying you for your 3gs. I have 3g and would like to have some video function.

  • realistically I'm too wedded to tmobile right now to take mikey up on it, so go for it, somebody else!
  • Get the free iPhone and unlock it for T-Mobile!
  • And then you can put your T-Mobile SIM in it, like I did to Flint's! It will be fun!
  • @flossy_logs I HAVE A GREAT DEAL FOR YOU!

How about I give you the 3GS, and then you sell your 3G and give me whatever you get for it?
  • that's a pretty good deal right there!

  • hey big mac what did you say when you called your phone company? Were you like "I'm gonna quit unless you j-holes give me cool stuff," or how did you phrase it?

I find this kind of interaction awkward and could use some pointers.
  • I can speak (a little) for bigmac here because I overheard his conversation. He basically said, "I'm THIS close to just going to get the iphone, but I thought I'd check with you guys to see if you want to give me a good deal to keep me as your customer." I mean, pretty straight up.
  • omg, so brave!
    i want to do this!
  • the deal i was offered was so good i had to promise not to go around talking about it!

but i suppose since my g-friend overheard it its okay for her to relate the story 'from her perspective'
  • edited December 2011
Ha! I love that telling a corporation that you are thinking of using another corporation's product is "brave."

Don't be afraid of hurting T-Mobile's feelings!
Just tell them what your thinking is and because you've been with them so long they will probably hook you up.
  • "I had to promise not to go around talking about it" = silly salesperson line, IMO bigmac. :) He wanted you to be REALLY satisfied.

This phone will keep your bill down, as it receives no incoming calls.
    It is also very warm.
  • I love my Cinco C-Phone!
  • Why the F*CK did I get this spam message in my inbox today? STOP STALKING ME, WEIRD INTERNET ROBOTS!

  • Mikey, that is a great deal! But I don't even know how to sell my 3G. Craigslist? I don't think it's a good deal for you!
  • You aren't supposed to tell me that!
  • I know! But remember - I was in the front of the naughty/nice line at the urho xmas party! I am nice!

This was a revelation for me, btw. I keep pointing out my niceness now to bigmac. "Hey bigmac, did you know I'm NICE? I am so nice! I helped a lady who's car broke down today. Aren't you glad I'm so nice?"
