TGIF

edited October 2011
Oh sorry, is it not TGIF for you???

TOO BAD YOU AREN'T A COLLEGE PROFESSOR, 'cause this shit is LONG FALL WEEKEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Instead of going home to visit my parents, like all of my students, I will be spending long fall sitting in my freezing house (we can't figure out how to turn the heater on and the landlord doesn't know either) wearing an alpaca wool shawl and a ski hat, grading midterms and finishing my syllabus for next semester. It's going to be AWESOME.

  • Today is Wednesday. And the AC is off. And I'm drowsy.
  • Long Fall Weekend? Already? Didn't school just start like 4 weeks ago?

Your landlord doesn't know how to turn on the heater? THAT'S CRAAAZY.

Good thing you have a snoopy to keep you warm.
  • He's not big enough, and he's got his own problems!!!

Does anyone know how to turn on heaters
  • Doesn't the previous tenant know how to turn on the heat?
I am currently all by myself in a big house so turning on the heat seems wrong but my studio is cold. I have a little space heater in there, the oil radiator-looking kind. It's wonderful. It doesn't dry out your skin like the usual electric version. I think it is worth investing in, they last a long time, are portable enough to move them around from room to room and even at a low setting they make it all better.
Even the cat has clued in that my studio is the warmest room of the house. She comes and "works" with me all day.
  • we are considering space heaters, as even when our normal heater is on (we have heard) it is super loud and doesn't heat the whole house.

    SPACE HEATER

I like those moveable radiator-looking ones, Joe, I wonder where I can get one and if it is a million dollars. Also, do they burn your house down? Can we leave it on during the day when we're gone, for the dog? That seems weird.
  • You can get those at like a Home Depot or Lowe's. They are not very expensive. You probably don't want to leave it on while you are gone (just in case, they have oil in them).

The radiator ones are sorta weak. I used to live in a giant house with broken heat and I have tried every imaginable type of space heater and the little dudes like this
    http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-5367-Oscillating-Ceramic-Heater/dp/B000TK9TLM/ref=pd_sim_hg2
are small miracles, and they usually have a thermostat you can program that shuts them off after it has heated up the room sufficiently. They are a little power hungry, but you probably only need one. They will heat up WAY more space than you think.
  • oh, that guy seems legit!!

Maybe get a coupla those guys. I wonder how much electricity they use? In terms of our monthly bill. I wonder if we will save money or spend more money by relying on them instead of our weird ancient loud wall heater that we can't turn on....

    space heater!

I had a space heater in Los Angeles and Bird (my cat) would sit on top of it and turn it on and off all night long

I did a post edit. I am bad about that, but yeah they suck power but not too bad. Not any worse than a regular house heater would cost.
  • I still say get the mini-radiator oil kind.
To me my one seems pretty inexpensive to use. I don't know how big the rooms are in your house, but if like us you have fairly small rooms to heat, it does the trick
    Three things:
-I always turn mine off when I leave the house, even for a short walk. The oil is heated, so when the heater is off it is still keeping the place warm. It takes a while for it to completely cool down. Usually by the time I get back and turn it back on the temperature of my studio is totally decent. I keep the thing at such a low level and never overnight unless it's insane winter weather and someone needs it for sleeping next to.
-The mini-radiators are almost 100% silent, except for the occasional sound of oil heating up, it's like a gentle little click.
-Anything that is blasting hot air is so gross to me. It makes my skin itch and my scalp feel dry and stinky. Radiating heat wins!

I think the radiator may work better than it did for me if your house is well sealed. They are totally silent so that might be a plus. The place I had was drafty, and it seemed like the radiator only kept an area of about 3 feet around the radiator warm. When I got that little aluminum dude it kept our giant drafty living room warm all by itself, and I often had to turn the little thermostat down because it was doing too good a job, and this was midwest winter not Portland sorta cold land. The aluminum dudes do make a sorta soft blowing noise but nothing crazy, and I have shitty skin and I never had any problems, but you know...
  • Good luck Zomie
  • It's weird that you're not going to visit your parents.
  • FYI I did space heaters one winter instead of using our gas heater and the electricity bills were ASTRONOMICAL!
Like, really shockingly expensive and I wished I hadn't done it because I wasn't ever all that warm. Just sayin'.

I'm in Houston, TX. It's quite warm.
  • My heater won't turn on until the landlord comes and lights the pilot light. HOW LONG CAN I GO? #livedinanacorteswithoutheatforyears #departmentofsafety #concretebuildings #gasbillwas$11lastmonth #maybeicangetbyontheradiantheatfromthedownstairspeople
  • I have not turned my heat on yet. I need a new blanket for my bed.
  • My gas bill was $7 last month. Haven't turned on heat here either. Our house stays pretty warm, is well insulated, but the intake fan is in the living room and is probably the most hated part of winter for me. When Spring comes, I am mostly excited to be freed from the sound of that fucking fan.
  • Do you have misophonia? I have it with loud eating sounds, but somehow the constant whine of the refrigerator doesn't drive me bonkers. I think it is because tinnitus made me get used to constant high-pitched tones.
  • Oh my god, I have it so intense with eating sounds. Always having to apologize to Andy when I have to turn on music or leave the room when she's eating, because I'm not trying to be rude and it's not about her at all, I just feel myself going totally insane when I hear mouth noises.

GUYS IN THE SAUNA AT THE GYM PUTTING LOTIONS ON THEIR WET SKIN MAKE ME WANT TO DIE.
  • THE SOUND OF A DOG LICKING AN EMPTY FOOD BOWL.

    Seriously, I go mental.
  • Is that what it's called? Misophonia?
Some sounds are so omnipresent to me sometimes.
I cannot stand heavy breathing, or like when someone is talking on the radio and their nose is making whistling sounds.
Also some voices when heard through walls.
And the dog across the street who is locked inside a home barking most of the time.
This is experienced when I am trying to concentrate or trying to sleep.
I also hear the phone ring all the time when music is playing.
  • I heard it only gets worse with age.
  • Could it just be "impatience"?
  • You're gonna need to take up the semantics with Western Medicine.
  • OMG.
    I can't believe it has a name.
Anger and rage I have been feeling with certain sounds.
Tears of anger and cringing for specific sounds. Pounding the desk with my fist. Pleading.
  • The sound of people brushing their teeth= my horror.

And yes, I do brush my own teeth! Carefully, and trying not to listen.
  • Owls I saw yr boyfriend just now he is driving to Spokane for a show tonight! That's a long drive!
  • Something new to be thankful for: not having misophonia at all, except for fingernails on the chalkboard and the sound of teeth grinding. But those are just normal, right?
  • I also like the oil one, and specifically, i like buying them on Craigslist where they are cheap.
  • Yeah, everyone hates those sounds, floss.
  • And also the squeaking of wet tennis shoes on linoleum! OMG I feel like my teeth are falling out of my head and my ears are turning inside out when I hear that sound. Even typing about it is torturing me.
  • Andy can't handle styrofoam rubbing on itself. I don't love it, but it doesn't destroy me.

OK. Little oil heaters again for a moment. The thing is: you push it under the desk and the warm heat comes burbling up your legs and elbows as you type on your inevitable machine. Turn it off and wear a sweater when done. Doesn't cost too much this way.
  • I wish there was a heater just for your hands, when typing in the frigid
  • Wrist warmers change my life in the winter. I feel like a normal person instead of a block of ice. There are some cute ones at H&M right now for cheap. Or it's a pretty easy knitting project on circular needles as, long as you know how to increase and add a thumb hole.
