fabric

Where should a girl go to find some cool fabric? I need to make some curtains, and I don't know where to get started.

Help?

  • Fabric Depot. Smoke w33d before you go.
  • I second the fabric depot recommendation, it's a treasure of our town. Ikea often has some nice fabric too but the selection pales in comparison to the acreage of fd.
  • Check the ladies at http://sewpo.com/.
  • Thank you! Went to fabric depot last night and was overwhelmed with my choices!

One thing I can't wrap my head around: why does it cost more to buy fabric to make curtains than it costs to buy actual, already-made curtains!? I don't get it.
  • @flossy_logs It's cheaper to buy bulk fabric by the tons and have people in Bangladesh churn them out (per capita annual income was only $1,940 in 2010) than to ship small amounts to stores in America. Planet Money is currently running a great series on manufacturing: http://www.npr.org/blogs/money/2013/05/14/184019151/episode-458-bangladeshs-t-shirt-economy
  • I wish I would have known how easy it was to sew curtains BEFORE I spent $150 on them!

I find the best/funkiest fabric at thrift stores and yard sales for pennies. The fabric will need a good wash, but totally worth it!
  • I think I listened to some of that series on manufacturing - I'll give the rest a listen.
  • Demand bulk fabric be sent to the U.S.! My new political cry.
