The soothing voices of Steve and Mike return to your life to help you focus on business and culture and feel like you have friends.

New theme song! Season 2 has a new vibe that is summed up with the song World of Regret by Ford & Lopatin (vimeo). The future is now. BANTER: If you are old enough, you can go to John Helmer‘s haberdashery. Steve was running merch for an unnamed band, basically setting up a pop-up shop each night and spreading the joy of using Square.

Musical break featuring the soothing sounds of DJ Douggpound. (And make sure to subscribe to Conversations by Gary Lacrosse on iTunes.)

Coffee talk and the role Starbucks will play in your life when you leave paradise. While back at home there is some concern about the local coffee scene. Mike says that the Stumpy story will not matter in three months (14AUG11).

Musical break with Paul McCartney from the 1979 album Back to the Egg.

Back my popular Dew-mand: An update concerning beverages, pops, sodas, spritzers, teas, bottled coffees and news from the beverage world. Specifically Sun Drop. Mike has a hard time saying “Dr. Pepper Snapple Group“.

Then it’s time for Mellow Yellow, which sounds as good as they want you to think the soda tastes. FUN FACT: Paul McCartney can be heard as one of the background revelers on this track.

Mike and Steve return from the song recording outside in order to smoke a cigar, but it’s a bit windy, so they have some trouble getting them lit. TREND OF THE WEEK: Greek Yogurt! And also #money.

Final song is a mystery we will reveal at a later date.

The word nicotiana (as well as nicotine) was named in honor of Jean Nicot, French ambassador to Portugal, who in 1559 sent it as a medicine to the court of Catherine de Medici.

The House of Medici was a political dynasty, banking family and later royal house who first began to gather prominence under Cosimo de’ Medici in the Republic of Florence during the late 14th century. The family originated in the Mugello region of the Tuscan countryside, gradually rising until they were able to found the Medici Bank. The bank was the largest in Europe during the 15th century, seeing the Medici gain political power in Florence.

The Medici Bank was one of the most prosperous and most respected institutions in Europe. There are some estimates that the Medici family were the wealthiest family in Europe for a period of time. From this base, they acquired political power initially in Florence and later in wider Italy and Europe. A notable contribution to the profession of accounting was the improvement of the general ledger system through the development of the double-entry bookkeeping system for tracking credits and debits. This system was first used by accountants working for the Medici family in Florence.

Double-entry bookkeeping has been considered a fundamental innovation and a cornerstone of Capitalism by such thinkers as Werner Sombart and Max Weber, Sombart writing in “Medieval and Modern Commercial Enterprise” that:

“The very concept of capital is derived from this way of looking at things; one can say that capital, as a category, did not exist before double-entry bookkeeping. Capital can be defined as that amount of wealth which is used in making profits and which enters into the accounts.”
