Crock – the Motion Picture

As part of PICA’s TBA festival, Crock – the Motion Picture is getting a fresh showing tomorrow night.

Plazm editor Jon Raymond and co-conspirator James Yu record live commentary with interjections from cast members and special guests on September 5th. There might be free 1996 Plazm magazines around too.

9/5
4:30-5:50 pm
Northwest Film Center Whitsell Auditorium at Portland Art Museum

Details + Tickets

Chaotic, challenging, and absent of marketable aesthetic, Crock premiered in 1996 and promptly sank into obscurity. Filmed with Hi-8 cameras and edited at Portland Cable Access, this feature-length video stars artists and musicians from Portland’s 90s indie scene. Inspired by the French Foreign Legion comic strip of the same name, Crock is a messy and doomed counterpoint to the boosterism and cosmopolitan ethos that eventually altered the city’s character.

Somewhere in North Africa, revolutionary Pretty Boy enlists the aid of Legionnaire Maggot to steal the iron fist of Commandant Vermin P. Crock. Meanwhile, Pretty Boy’s sister Flossie plots her own overthrow of the colonial regime with the help of her all-womyn militia.

The movie shares characteristics with a genre of no-budget, underground films, and gestures toward conceptual art as initiated by artists including Hans Haake and Raymond Pettibon. Over a decade later, the film continues to vex audiences with its weirdly puritan perversity and disregard for cinematic conventions. Celebrating the film’s thirteenth anniversary, PICA brings together the filmmakers and cast members for another look at this odyssey of insurrectionary filmmaking.

“Crock means well, but bad taste, amateurism, [and] idea ripoffs hurt it.”
The Oregonian, 1996

Also showing 9/6 at 6:30 pm and 9/12 at 4:30 pm

Graffiti Archaeology: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

I totally forgot about this site until I came across it again today… still just as cool. Unearth the archaeology of a variety of graffiti walls, layer by layer over the years.

McCatering to the Races

McDonald’s Corporation has recently launched a couple of websites specifically targeted to African American and Asian American audiences. In the misguided marketing effort category, I’m lovin’ this as the winner. Note the catchy site names.

Portland Stock

Portland loves art… and using talk and art as an excuse to do our actual favorite things: eat and drink. So! Portland Stock steps in with a lovely idea.

Artists send in proposals for a “grant,”which is on display at the dinner. Diners vote on which proposal ought to be funded — out of the money they paid to get in the door and get fed. That artist presents their work at the next Portland Stock dinner, the following month.

Other charming options for food, drink, and moderated discussion about creativity and art in this town: New Oregon Interview Series (next event this Wednesday) hosted by Nora Robertson, the back room with host/curators Matthew Stadler and Stephanie Snyder, and Bright Lights, hosted by Randy Gragg.

MIT Persona Project

Personas is a component of the Metropath(ologies) exhibit, currently on display at the MIT Museum by the Sociable Media Group from the MIT Media Lab. Personas sees how the internet sees “you”—or at least your name. How important are digital histories? And how does that impact the individual?
