And they’re suing Bart Simpson, too.

Nope, this doesn’t come from The Onion! The Chamber of Commerce is actually, really suing the Yes Men for a prank press conference they managed to pull off. Political theatre: now punishable by lawsuit in the United States of America.

This is the same US Chamber of Commerce that opposes doing anything about climate change and global warning (Nike and Apple recently and very publicly resigned from the organization for this reason).

US Chamber of Commerce: to you I say, “Ptui.” And, “I fart in your general direction.” And let’s throw in a big, good old-fashioned “Fuck you,” too.

Poster Initiative 003 @ PKN Tokyo

I’ll be debuting and giving away installment #3 of my Poster Initiative offset-printed poster series at Super Deluxe this Wednesday during my Pecha Kucha Night presentation. The posters are produced in editions of 1,000 and distributed around Tokyo. Not advertising- just free design for the people.

I’ll be doing a glib presentation on the “The Year in Review”- a look back over highlight projects for my design studio in 2009.

Pecha Kucha Night Presentations

pknp

I have the dubious honor of being the very first Pecha Kucha Night presenter to have a presentation presented online at PKN’s new Presentations section of their website, designed by UltraSuperNew. You can listen to me sputter, babble, and throw out half-truths here, as recorded 2+ years ago.

I’ll be presenting again this Wednesday, doing my “Year in Review”, updating interested folks (and uninterested folks schmoozing over drinks) about what my design studio has been up to in 2009. Come on down!

Old Masters & New Psychedlia Still on View at The Cooley

The Language of the Nude: Four Centuries of Drawing the Human Body
Psychedelic Soul: Contemporary Responses to the Masters

Rarely traveled, now is a great opportunity to see a deep collection of master drawings from the Crocker Art Museum.

In a beautiful juxtaposition, curator Stephanie Snyder has included a room of video portraits by Antoine Catala. These works inform one another in a compelling manner, synthesizing the corporeal and the technological.

You can view them in person at the Cooley through December 5. Each installation of this work is unique. If you want to get a sense of the movement and you can’t make it to the gallery, check out Antoine’s site where some QuickTime movies of the work are posted.

Through December 5, 2009

Liminal: An Examination of Graffiti in Tokyo

I recently self-published a 32 page zine that covers the scope of Tokyo street graffiti to coincide with a lecture I did recently for the Artalking series of contemporary art gatherings in Tokyo.

The zine features an illustrated essay in English about Tokyo graffiti while simultaneously operating as a sort of “birdwatching guide” to help readers identify different graffiti writers’ work.

Liminal was printed in an edition of 125 and each is hand-numbered. You can pick one up for $12.00 postpaid (shipping included) via Paypal to ian(at)ianlynam.com or email me.

Yokoyama Yuichi new book: Baby Boom!

Yokoyama Yuichi’s latest book, Baby Boom, is out now. 160 pages of two- and three-color overprinted marker drawing madness. The book is primarily wordless (katakana onomatopoeia sound effects included, however) and an excellent introduction to the work of Japan’s leading contemporary avant garde manga artist. Yokoyama’s work has been translated into English and published by PictureBox in the U.S. to great acclaim.

I have a small stack of them available for $35 postpaid (shipping included worldwide) for those that might be interested. Hit me up at ian(at)ianlynam.com if you are interested- that’s my Paypal account ID, as well, should you want to go direct.

Super-duper-rad modular Japanese typography, awesome printing, and a rarity in the States for a while.

Chinese Box

Wherein a small town architecture critic makes a sojourn to the “Asian city” and discovers that size matters….

We recently posted this article to the Plazm magazine web site by Randy Gragg with photography by Susan Suebert. Original article appeared in the out-of-print / sold out edition of Plazm #23.
