TODAY AT TBA: BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE
You can have this info emailed to you daily by signing up at Pica.org!
Celebrate hump day and drop by PICA after work for Khris Soden’s The Portland Tour of Tilburg; then, at 8:30 p.m., continue the evening with a choice of two stunning shows. If you’re in the mood for a quiet meditation on the reclamation of everyday objects, drop by the Winningstad Theatre for the final performance of Tiago Guedes’ wondrous Materiais Diversos. This is a show you won’t want to miss.
Or, if you want to run in another direction, have a cocktail after work and call all of your friends to meet you at the Someday Lounge for the most explosive, raunchy, horny performance in town: Kenny Mellman & Bridget Everett in Sexercise Live! A Tribute to the Potty-Mouth and Profound Millie Jackson. Mellman plays the piano while Everett channels Jackson, an R&B singer whose star peaked in the early 80s with hits like “If Loving You is Bad, I Don’t Want to be Right.” Check out Millie performing live.
6:30 PM – Khris Soden, The Portland Tour of Tilburg meet at PICA: TBA Central Box Office
8:30 PM – Tiago Guedes, Materiais Diversos at PCPA, at Winningstad Theatre
8:30 PM – Kenny Mellman & Bridget Everett, Sexercise Live! at Someday Lounge
The WORKS keeps raising the bar as an intimate gathering place for friends, artists, and local musicians. Tonight, keep the party rolling and head over to Leftbank for Portland faves Root Beer and French Fry as they weave together such diverse influences as Western epic soundtracks, rhythm & blues, and electro-pop into feet-skipping instrumental gems. After RBFF, dance into the early morn with the psychedelic digital funk of Nollifur, with a rotating group of musicians who hail from Boise, Idaho.

TBA BEHIND THE SCENES – PICA THANKS MALINA!
If procuring an Alfa Romero from Longview, WA, wasn’t enough, PICA crack tech crew has done it again. This time, the set for the Superamas performance got held up in LA. After exploring several options, PICA reached out to former Portland, now-LA resident Malina Rodriguez, who worked as technical director for two TBA Festivals. Malina drove the set in a 26-foot truck from Los Angeles to Portland in 18 hours with just a few hours notice.
She was greeted with much love when she arrived at THE WORKS at 10 p.m. last night, just in time for the performance by tEEth, a Portland-based performance ensemble with whom Malina has worked many times. Malina’s efforts landed her in the local press.

TBA:08 ON SIGHT: TAMY BEN-TOR

Gewald, 2007
Video, 8:53 minutes

In two new video works Tamy Ben-Tor continues her insightful and biting exploration of Jewish identity, caricature and history. Combining many dialects to form a hybrid language, Ben-Tor’s speech is intentionally garbled, yet still evokes a sense of understanding through cliché. In Gewald, pastoral scenes and folk customs are paired with subversive images of children’s storybooks, while shapeshifting women sing passages from Primo Levi’s important Holocaust memoir and ramble about the “comfortable” life of Jews in Egypt. In Baby Eichmann, a fair-haired flutist floats about while tales of an “idiot” leader who turned out to be a madman are recounted.
