Manohla Dargis talks about seperating a director from their work, i.e. Is Lars Von Trier really a Nazi Sympathizer and her feelings about watching a Polanski film when she thinks he’s a pedophile and rapey creep. I really love that she is bringing this into the Times consistently, she is not apologetic for her feminist eye–it’s the very nature of her criticism.

I had a sort of melancholy thought today that Dargis is almost too good for the Times. Not only because she deserves the extra 3500 words that a magazine could afford her, but also because I don’t always expect this kind of work from the Times. That’s too bad. Still, it’s great that she isn’t limited to the targeted readership of a magazine like so many others with her voice would be. It’s great that the Times brings her to the masses. Sometimes it seems like the only distinctly-voiced critics at the Times are the ones who give stars to restaurants.
