   why any of this is suddenly a surprise? america hates black people, it’s only been a generation or two since the voting rights act, and things haven’t gotten any better in the 40 years since.
   meanwhile the implicit racism has only grown worse. economic inequality quarantines the blacks as well as any walls the nazi’s built around the jewish ghettos. there is no money in the communities, which means lack of money for locally funded public education. the swat teams protecting the white homes in new orleans, while the people stuck in the city were left to fend for themselves was a perfect metaphor for the entire country’s priorities when it comes to policing poor neighborhoods. just make sure they don’t break into our homes.
   take away money, education and police from the community, add a healthy dosing of crime and drugs, and you have a breeding ground for “hoodlums”. the link between poverty and crime is not hard to prove.
   except the hoodlums are still the minority, and it’s the poor black american families that have to live with those hoodlums every day of their lives. new orleans just gave the assholes free reign to rape and murder in a public forum, and instead of weeping for the people stuck there, instead of the cavalry rushing in to save them, america abandoned the people who needed our help most to lawlessness, the same shit on a grander scale.
   and the response has been typical. treat an entire class of people like trash, create a breeding grounds for criminals, and when the criminals come to the surface, use it as an example to show what animals the blacks are, and reinforce the racist ideas that are preventing america from making the rot that is eating our country from the inside it’s biggest priority.
   i am just sorry people don’t show the same outrage every day when some republican cocksucker says black folk should just pick themselves up by the bootstraps and exercise some personal responsibility. it’s awfully easy to say that when you are a relatively privileged white man who takes money, police protection, education, and little things like not having a father in jail and/or a fucking crack whore for a mother, for granted.
   hopefully it will sink in that personal responsibility during a hurricane you were too broke to escape is no sillier a concept than personal responsibility to escape from a ghetto you didn’t stick yourself in.
   watching america whistling the same old tune during this is infuriating. saying why are “they” shooting at helicopters when we trying to save them. why are “they” raping babies as soon as the shit hits the fan? why are “they” such nigger animals is the undercurrent to all of that.
   there’s only two sides of this fence to be on. either a person can show compassion and empathy, and view all people as human beings like themselves, or they can’t.
   when something very wrong is going on someplace that doesn’t fit with in with america’s happy white weltanschauung, either you tick off A – due to external forces, how the fuck can we change them or you tick off B – the mysterious lazy/thieving/lying nature of a race somehow different than ours. or euphamistically blame upbringing, culture. no matter how it is worded, it means “typical nigger behavior”.
   right now, in this country, most people tick off B, whether it’s applied to iraqis or africans or the racism eating this country from the inside out.
