Lamprey are an intergal part of the Columbia Basin’s aquatic species. Lampreys play a role as both predator and prey. Lamprey are predators in the marine enviroment. As juveniles, they are filter feeders, cleaning the rivers. Adults do not feed in freshwater and live off their own stored fats. Lampreys are culturally important to the northwest tribes’ for subsistence, medicinal, and ceremonial uses. Lamprey runs are currently dwindling out of control and there are BPA funded projects in the Columbia River Basin to research and restore lamprey populations.
