i hope we didn’t kill any turtles! most of the balloons you see floating away are actually computer animation. the clusters of balloons are tied down with fishing line, and then in the big master shot at the end we did let some balloons fly away, but then composited three additional layers and added a bunch more, so that we essentially made what was probably 40 balloons look like 400 balloons. if you freeze frame it you can actually start to see the pattern repeating, kind of like looking through a digital kaleidoscope.

wonderful. my son and i were mesmerized. i loved the sweetness of the narrative. baxter liked the part where the shins steal the balloons. i look forward to seeing more.
