HOLOCENE AND 66 RECORDS ?NEW MUSICS?: A NEW NIGHT OF MODERN CLASSICAL AND AVANT-GARDE EXPLORATION, PREMIERING THURSDAY, DECEMBER 9th.
Featuring CLASSICAL REVOLUTION PDX in collaborative sets with Special Guest Composers COPY, Daniel Menche, Matt Carlson (Golden Retriever, Oregon Painting Society) and Thomas Thorson (Tahni Holt, Interiors).
Get it? Because it?s new? and also: ?New.?
Portland?s famously fertile musical community has a really hard time setting healthy creative boundaries for itself. It?s a big part of what keeps our city?s music scene teeming with such an enviable array of new and exciting musical projects and prospects: experimental composers and sound artists frequently dip their toes into populist waters, just as pop musicians brazenly borrow from the annals of the avant-garde. From all five quadrants, the realms of sonic possibility are giddy with cross-pollination and unabashed genre-b(l)ending.
To capitalize on this unique confluence of creativities, Holocene and 66 Records presents NEW MUSICS?a brand new quarterly series that invites Portland?s most exciting sound scientists and pop adventurers to collaborate with some of the city?s under-sung traditional music ensembles, in an evening of sonic experimentation on the grand scale.
Under the curatorial guidance of Claudia Meza (Explode Into Colors) and Holocene’s Megan Holmes, each edition of NEW MUSICS will highlight a single musical ensemble to serve as the house band for a rotating cast of local composers, musicians, and songwriters?who will each be invited to tailor their singular compositions in exploration of the particular qualities of the night?s given ensemble. It?s a unique opportunity for experimental composers and pop musicians alike to explore the boundaries of their compositions with a large, adept musical ensemble, and a chance for those ensembles to exhibit their artistry in a new kind of setting?and in an entirely different light.
With its official launch party scheduled for Thursday, December 9th, NEW MUSICS is proud to present its introductory line-up?a night of collaborations with stellar Chamber collective Classical Revolution PDX?who are set to perform compositions by beloved electro producer COPY, internationally renowned and absurdly prolific sound artist Daniel Menche, Golden Retriever and Oregon Painting Society tone warrior Matt Carlson, and Tahni Holt?s Thomas Thorson. In addition, Classical Revolution PDX will tackle Philip Glass? dizzying String Quartet No.5, while DJ E*Rock provides the evening?s musical interludes?all for a mere $7.
