He does, anyway, understand how new and renovated properties, and the public/private street-clearing campaigns that surround them, are actively unfriendly to the older and funkier San Francisco. That part has only gotten truer since he wrote it.

Have you heard of the photographer Greg Girard? He has a book called Phantom Shanghai, which not only conjures the atmosphere/setting of Gibson’s novels, but in fact has a forward by the man himself:

Great review, makes me want to go back and re-read it. But it’s the Bay bridge, not the Golden Gate Bridge that houses the shantytown.

I really don’t have much to add to your thoughtful review of Virtual Light. I just wanted you to know that someone is paying attention and appreciates your work here at Space Cannon. Thanks. It’s lovely and refreshing.

Gibson is one of my favorite authors. I think of him as a literary pointillist, building worlds from a zillion little details. The Bridge Trilogy is great, but his most recent trilogy, is, IMHO, his best work yet.
