I feel like if I never got into that stuff when I was young, I never would have. My mom is also a total fantasy/sci-fi nerd so I just assumed it was all normal at that age.I think for you it might be easier to get into her short stories. There is this one short collection entitled “Get Off The Unicorn” that is short and pretty accessible. I remember my Mom actually sent me a copy when I was living in Sweden because she wanted to point something out relating to the current state of Internet in one of the stories. So cute :)

Some books have kind of been game changers for me recently on the issue (Ursula K. LeGuin ones, particularly), and I promise to read Anna McCaffrey with total straight-faced sincerity. I believe! What do you recommend?

Her novels are very soap-opera-y and defintely more drenched in fantasy than science fiction. However, I love her and between the ages of 10 and 13 I read every single one of her novels and short stories (not a small feat). You can do it! I must confess though, the Dragon books were never my favorites. She wrote a bunch (including good short stories that would be easier for you to get into) about telepaths and other pyschics.
