One of the most fascinating things to me about James Dean has always been how a figure so closely identified with rigid 50s masculinity is absolutely rife with sexual ambiguity. Perhaps not that surprising, but telling. Instead, most of the discussion of this piece has hinged on it’s supposed difficulty. While I certainly found it complex, multivalent, surprising and challenging, I also found it incredibly lucid and accessible… perhaps utilizing my knowledge and experience vis-à-vis this constellation of themes as an “entry point.”
