January 2006 Archives
after the vision and hearing show at holocene i was exhausted. i played last and late. i was outside getting some air when a nice man came up to me and complimented me on my set. said something to the effect of "i'm giving you 200 on wednesday" i said "200? 200 what?" "WORDS" "oh cool! thanks!" and that was it. so i excitedly assumed someone was going to write a review of the show.
i noticed the extremely kind blurb and photo in the mercury first, and assumed i had met Adam Gnade that night. but subsequent emailings with Gnade (mostly about santana and the awesome videos on santana.com) i found out i was wrong. it was a cat by the name of Michael Byrne, who wrote this great review of the show for the williamette week. Only now, online, with the help of google did i find the article. here it is (from jan 11th 2006)
"White Rainbow, Jan. 7 at Holocene
Adam Forkner lays out his crowd.
[ELECTRO] Walking into the back room at Holocene for the White Rainbow set last Saturday, you'd think the room was empty: Save for an odd cluster at the doorway, there was barely a bobbing head to be seen. The crowd was instead on the floor—not sitting but rather lying on it, smiling with upward-gazing eyes. These were the fans, the ones who get ambient music enough to realize how sound can fill a space so it makes the performer, his physical being, anyhow, irrelevant. And walking into that space you would barely notice White Rainbow's sole member, Adam Forkner, either, crouched in the dark among a circle of effects pedals, samplers and a borrowed computer.
The sound that crowd was staring up into was unexpected; something far denser and rhythmic than what's found on Forkner's recent release, Zome, a four-song album that teases the listener with gentle psych-folk before suspending the sound into a narrow band of ambience on the 20-minute title track. Instead, the room held a sound nearly tribal: beat-oriented and mixed with chopped tracks of jungle hoots. The set climaxed in pure psychedelia, with Forkner standing, facing a spiraling video backdrop while suspending a Pink Floydish guitar melody. It then descended into noisy play, whipping the room's sound contents into a frenzy. And by the end, the crowd had raised their heads, dazed by the aural swirl above created by both the video background and Forkner. A wonderfully rude awakening. MICHAEL BYRNE."
wow! thanks!
also, for the record, here is Gnade's piece on the night from the Mercury from Jan 12th 2006:
"It's Who You Know
BY ADAM GNADE
.........Adam Forkner, you crazy sonofabitch, I salute you. Send me your address and I'll mail you gift baskets of fruit and bottles of Babycham, and singing telegrams because your set at Vision and Hearing knocked me over like a rake to the face. Your new project White Rainbow is outstanding and trippy and made me think of Santana, light shows, and San Francisco in '67—all of which I was too young to catch the first time around, but got a good atavistic echo of it on Saturday night. Next morning, I listened to side one of your old band Yume Bitsu's Golden Vessyl of Sound for three fucking hours and stared out into the gray-ass day lost in mantric drone and haze."
jeez! thanks guys for the very kind words. i've been told i don't take compliments very well, but GOD DANG! thank you a million times. I've been blushing all month. It feels like gloating, but getting a good review really makes me feel good. A huge dose of support for the constantly battered notion that i haven't been wasting my life doing this weird shit. for that i am eternally grateful.
omg omg omg im so excited!!!
at long last, the white rainbow box 5CDs and 1 DVD is finally available. This thing started off as a dream and a new years resolution at the beginning of last year. One year later and the BOX is a reality. The discs just got back from the plant, the boxes are being filled and Marriage Records has them up for sale.
or you can get one from me personally, just let me know before you stop by the house. pop in, pop out. no big deal.
The white rainbow box spans three years of recording on 5 CDs, and the DVD features videos by alex hubbard, e*rock, honey owens, steve schroeder and one weird one i made. I don't know what to say, I'm really proud of this thing and can't wait for people to hear it.

also, check out the new white rainbow myspace
and
honey owens/valet myspace
her new song on there (called "my volcano") fucking RULES. i know, i know - we live together. but for serious i can't stop listening to it, and this is just the ROUGH mix. fuck.
in other news, i got a new computer yesterday, but it had a broken internal mic so i exchanged it this evening for a new one. But this brand new one has a stuck pixel and when i went back for the third time the dudes had no pity nor sympathy nor remorse. wouldn't let me exchange it. wouldn't give me a full refund without some BS "restocking" fee. i'll tell you the whole, long story if you want me to. shame on you, apple store employee, shame. deep deep shame and guilt with multi-internal-levels of pain to you, you no good sunofagun.
anyway, the main point is that honey and i got waay into myspace this week, so check our stuffs out.
and she has been sick in bed all day so send your healing vibes through the ether.
oh, and we're playing some shows as world with the plants in portland and seattle in the next few weeks, i'll get the dates when i can remember them
love love love
