PS THAT LAST ENTRY WAS A JOKE! BUT KEEP POSTING IF YOU HAVE MORE ADVICE RE: STAGE BANTER

advice about stage banter

| | Comments (9)

steve and i got to chatting today about a very important subject: stage banter. he suggested i share my thoughts on the subject with all of you. many of you reading are performers. and we could all use a little help with talking to the crowd, right?

we've all had this conversation before:
"onstage at that particular venue, he was probably supremely insecure
thinking that no one cared"

" but people would have been fine listening to his music
and watching.....it was his banter that really did it. it was such a turn off when he tried to make us all dance/be quiet durring his soulful ballad/clap our hands and say ho!/ sing along/come in closer/et al. we were just there to have a drink and hang out with our friends and listen to some music/we were there to see another band/we were just there to have fun. really i would have maybe even enjoyed it if he wasn't so disrespectful of the audience"

we've all seen performers do this sort of thing on stage
maybe some of us have been that performer at some point
lets admit it: some of us are just plain BAD at stage banter.
some times you just get defensive
and offend the crowd
that WILL happen
and you will paint yourself into a corner
that WILL happen
whats worse than a performer who, after what would have been a great number, apologizes about their voice, or complains about the monitors, or makes a fuss about tuning their instrument, or says they are sick, or tells long boring stories that have no point?
thats why i feel it is best to rehearse stage banter just like it was another song in your set!
it really works!
you might think it sounds silly to rehearse being "off the cuff", but i'm gonna let you in on a little secret:
nearly every top notch world reknowned performer does it
from george w bush down to p diddy
down to that sucessful band playing at the local bar to a bunch of fans every weekend

and you know what? people dont know the difference!

"really???" you say.

really.

and if you follow these simple guidelines, you WON'T paint yourself into a corner while on the mic between songs ever again

a good way to start is by watching other performers live, in your home, on dvd
listening to these true professionals handle a crowd can teach us so much
and since its off the cuff, we can totally borrow from them as much as we please
here are some ground rules

ok, number 1: you can never say thank you enough. thank the other bands, the bar, the bar tenders, the staff, the sound guy, the people who came, your friends. remember, everyone is listening to you, and they dont have to, and for that they should be thanked!

number 2: you are not a comedian
its ok to tell a funny joke if it really is funny. sarcasm, ironic statements and other sorts of "humor" are not generally appreciated by most members of your audience. unless you really are a comedian, dont try to pull off humor on stage. a good sincere demeanor goes a long way inn garnering respect from your audience

number three: keep it short. this is really important. keep it short and sweet and you will generally not paint yourself into a corner

number four: if you ask the audience to do something (like clap their hands, say HO!, sit down, etc) you are asking for trouble. and if they dont do what you ask, dont berate them
we all know that rappers in the hip hop word like to shout out commands. and it can be inspiring to hear someone say everybody get down. but if the crowd is not responsive the first time, dont try this again

ok, i think this enough for lesson one. next time you hit the stage, try to remember these points and most importantly, HAVE FUN. performing is a learning experience for everyone, from the kid playing the highscool talent show to the polished vegas stage act. so just get out there, be polite and have a good time!

doobadoobadooba yeah coach carter was sweet. he got that team into shape and gave them a chance to go to collage. thats cool. we folded zome inserts. last night there was a jam. there was a snare drum and some hoots and hollers and some guitar skronks. its been a white rainbow weekend. so much designing and folding and kinkos and photoshop and all of this. curtis and steve are being amazing and i just cant believe they are putting things out for me. stoked. franz gets into town soon. dan is getting married next weekend. jona is getting back tonight or something. what? tomorrow? i dunno. mark plays choppy piano soul. terry riley is a mellow west coast hippy. delivering wine to fred meyers is the worst job ever.all other deliveries are totally sweet. the heat sucks. bills need paying. the month is half done with again. hubbard made a prop with a mirror and flares. he waits for a good beachside sunset. i dont know how to make a dvd. like, the menu and shit. dvd studio pro, right? yeah i opened it once. i have to compile all these vids and make a cool screen. make a perfect rainbow palate. sometimes the drivers side door just wont close and it swings open when making right turns. well, just on friday morning. not since then. its something to do with the window and the lock being half broken off by crack heads. we have been going to sleep before midnight. who would have thunk? i need new shoes soon. and ableton live to work still, and and and.yeah. did we mention will ferrell playing tabla for terry riley? or his jazzy ways? that new mexican joint on alberta is off the list due to stomach aches. i saw fox leraning to walk this week. in the evening breezes cool it all back down. but the sun burns through our windows as it sets. trying to erase the feeling that "minimalism" lacks human spirit. like terry. or ravi. we watched a doc on ravi. so dedicated to his craft. devotion. open and devoted. apparently when jimi lit his guitar on fire onstage in monterey back in the day, ravi was honestly shocked. i could see that...the way terry was just so devoid of any ego. or conceptual rigor. let go of the past. more than the people he was surrounded by. just doing whatever came to mind. remembering that he could not hold onto anything. playing dinner jazz and mellow new agey piano riffs. loose vocal ragas. just so human. so laid back. so west coast. a total lack of pretension. hes let it all go. or something. it CAN be loose and a little sloppy around the edges. rothko connects more than Barnett Newman. its the rough edges. a refined sense of imperfection that connects it back to the eternal imperfections and impermanence of life. something. shit i dunno.

this is some shit i did tonight. they really have no purpose other than to keep me away from the real task at hand, which is finishing the actual album artwork for these releases. i just hate photoshop. its good for this sort of bullshit fake-pro promo stuff, but i just cant commit to using it for anything serious. fuck. whatever. so steve, curtis, you can have these things to use for whatever. i dont really know what else to do with them but put em up here.

all the shows last week were awesome for different reasons:

the collaborative world set with the plants on monday was awesome because josh and molly are awesome and trusted in going up there with out rehearsal and just burning through some deep improv raga psyche jams and renditions of two of their lovely tunes. and the other bands ALL blew my mind
the collaborative world set with inca ore on tuesday was a total rip trip dip. eva's raw simplicity is the perfect fit with our vibe. i set a drone, and let the girls wail echo mic chants and howls. mmm nice.
the jomf show for the pop fest on saturday afternoon was funny. we took too long to set up, played a deep long trip with seven people, went over our allotted time, freaked some squares, tripped some heads and generally had a great time.
the world set later that night at fix was a stone cold slow burner. danny and warren and genevieve made some really deep sounds
the white rainbow set on sunday was a quiet dome whisper. andrew's set blew my mind with ambient computer music and conceptual humor and ritchey's set made me nostalgic for so god damn many past party times we've had. man oh man.

anyway, i got more work delivering wine for another dude. it will be more regular, around 20 hrs a week. im really hoping this changes my personal life for the better
and i just got news hubbard's totally chillin on the coast with dan and alise. this means deep brotherhood vibe pow-wows are soon to follow.
i saw the erock white rainbow video and it blew my mind. i just feel honored and amazed. 26 minutes of pure rave tunnel. it could not be more perfect.

so im doing pretty good, i guess

uhhhhh how are you?

yeah.......

love
adam
