Amtrak vs UPS

Archived from July 16, 2006

To send 1 dresser approx 70lbs from chicago to portland, oregon:

UPS: $120 for shipping + $75 for wrapping
Amtrak: $49, wrapping included + have to sign a waiver saying "I won't blame Amtrak for damage".

Everyday that I have not shipped my items via Amtrak is a bonfire of wasted money.

Amtrak is like a handsome new boy in school - I'm interested in getting to know more about this Amtrak. So far, so good.

My mother told me Amtrak doesn't go to Alaska - Amtrak, you are a tricky little vixen aren't you.

The UPS man who delivers to my hometown is a handsome, handsome man. If I still lived in my hometown, I would want to receive packages via UPS, but send via Amtrak.

I'd like to send a shoutout to the men of Amtrak shipping, who helped me get a great deal on shipping. I met them when I ventured down into the annals of Chicago's Union Station. It was like going into the batcave - of good deals.

one time Jona and I were trying to ship a Marshall stack across the nation, and nobody would do it for us. We went to UPS, where they boxed it up, measured it, told us it was two inches above their height requirement, unboxed it, and gave it back to us. At FedEx it was over their weight requirement. We finally found some old mysterious man who told us to take it to Amtrak, which we did. They told us to put that it was "furniture" on the form so no one would steal it. It cost like a nickel. Even though it took a full 10 hours of hellish beauracracy and lugging a Marshall stack around, this is one of the better realizations of my life and I am glad that you now have it as well.
