I was unlucky enough to be raised Lutheran, but lucky enough to attend a really old church that had a huge pipe organ and very talented organist. He played a lot of cool, complicated pieces as processionals after the service and I would usually stick around and listen. Good stuff.
My PhD-granting institution has a really fancy organist, and he plays the processional music at the hooding ceremony every year. The hooding ceremony literally lasts forever, at least an hour of JUST people's names and dissertation titles being read and them stepping forward to receive their degree in a long line. The organist just jams the whole time. He has some hits he returns to every year (the theme from Bolero) but a lot of it is just pure noodlin'. However, he has great timing (I bet all good organists do, from church), and he always starts playing Kashmir as the last 100 or so people are going up. By the time the last person's name is read, he BLASTS the awesome part of the riff and everyone starts hysterically screaming. Basically the person getting a PhD that year whose name starts with Z is totally stoked
Kinda interesting because this guy made Twitter's first API in his early 20s, co-founded Simple, and became a millionaire when Twitter went public and then again when Simple was acquired. Anyway, it's nice to remember that not all tech millionaires are libertarian douchebags.
