We're playing at Mike and Willow's house (4009 N Mississippi #3). Go to Mississippi and Shaver, then walk down shaver to the beer store. See that gate? That goes to Mike and Willow's house. There is a doorbell hidden where the dumpster is. You can also call Mike: 503-380-2727

We're starting at 2pm. Bring $3 and go over the rules and play a practice game. Spades is actually pretty easy and very fun!

We're playing based on these standard Spades rules.

Come with a partner or solo and we'll find someone for you to play with. If you can pre-register it will help us be ready to set things up.

Part one of the event will be a round robin tournament of about three or four games Followed by a single-elimination tournament to determine the medal winners.

There are just 10 days until the Scrabble tournament! Thank you to those who have already pre-registered. Pre-registration isn't required, but it helps us better plan the event. And it's super easy, just follow the three prompts on the web site.

To help you get ready for the tournament here is some advice from seasoned Scrabble players Jessica, Tara, and Krystal:

- Learn a few Q words that don't require U's, like QI and QAT.

- SUQ ("an Arab marketplace") and QAT ("an Arabian shrub") are the most important words you can know to use up a Q. One doesn't require a U and the other has the Q after the U.

- Each turn's score is important, but so is making sure your rack stays balanced. If you have five vowels and two consonants, don't play just your two consonants -- you risk pulling even more vowels! It's usually worth playing a lower scoring word if you need to ditch some tiles that are making your rack really hard to play.

- Remember the musical dealie, "do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do."

- Don't overly focus on building the perfect word in your rack. Use the best premium squares (triple-letter score!) and build a word around that.

- You should never play an S for less than 30 points.

- If you score out possible plays on a turn, you'll find that the long single words almost never score as many points as a shorter one that places a high-scoring letter on a premium tile.

- Simple words bring big points if they're placed right! Look for more than one word per turn by watching both vertical and horizontal placements.

- Good Scrabblin' takes PRACTICE.

- Good at memorizing? The Two Letter Words

- Never, ever play something that opens up a triple word tile for your opponent. They WILL use it, even if it's just with low scoring tiles, so that you can't use it. And if they can pull off even a moderately good word, you could be in the hole by 50+ points in a single turn.

Hello Esteemed Members of the Urban Honking Athletic Club,

UHAC, the greatest athletic club in the greater Portland area, has been challenged. No other than my arch rival and younger brother, Curt Merrill, has created the Card Board League, a monthly series of games that are either card-based or board games (and sometimes both!). He did this last year in the city of Atlanta and for 2010 he has challenged us, proclaiming that his champion of cards and board games is greater than our champion.

So this is how it will work:

You show up once a month to play either a board or card game, we track the stats, and then the winner will go head to head against the reigning champ from Atlanta.

The first event is a Scrabble tournament on Feb 20. There is more information here:

http://cardboardleague.com/events/1/

Curt will be officiating the games in Atlanta, and I will be officiating the games in Portland. After Scrabble the games will be:

March - Spades
April - Battleship
May - Poker
June - Backgammon
July - Magic
August - Chess
September - Cribbage
October - The Championship

There is a $3 entry fee on most events, but you also win medals! Yay! You can pre-register for the events online:

http://cardboardleague.com/events/1/

Or you can just show up at 2pm on Saturday, Feb 20th.

Yours,
-Kenneth Michael Merrill

Saturday (Oct 24th) @ 2:30 PM at Madrona City Park (right behind the Adidas Campus).

It's cool! Artificial turf. Fancy setting. I think it might make more sense to come through the neighborhood on the east side and park there? Or maybe it's okay to come up Greeley and use Adidas's visitor parking? It did not seem like anyone was actively patrolling or giving a crap.

Here's where it is:
google map

This is for all levels of play. Mike will be playing, and he is TERRIBLE at soccer, so you will not be the worst player, and even if you are, you will have fun. Plus there are a small handful of soccer nerds who will teach you cool tricks like how to do a bicycle kick and the puskas.

As participants gathered, much trash was being talked about the 2008 winner, Steve Schroeder, and his tourney record of a 39 on the south course of the GOLF-O-RAMA at Steakburger in Vancouver WA.

"With 21 competitors this year I'm guessing it's anyone game." said Mike Merrill, former player (2006 UrHo Classic Champion) and tourney official, "The talk this year is all about Schroder's ability to pull a three-peat, but we've got a lot of new blood this time."

But it wasn't any of the new blood that took the top spot. dalas verdugo, who placed 9th last year with a 55, grabbed a big lead at about the 8th hole with a hole in one, and went on to dominate the tournament with a total score of 40 to take the $100 grand prize. "That's the best round I've played in my life," verdugo admitted. As for being two strokes away from the Tourney Record? "I feel crushed. I'd give back the $100 if I could have two strokes."

Schroeder, losing his chance to be a three time champion, was gracious, "I started slowly and felt off my game. Maybe the heat got to me, maybe it was the lack of coffee, but dalas deserves that win." Schroeder ended in 7th place with a 54.

The heat was not just an excuse this year. The tourney started at a warm 78 degrees and climbed up to 87 by the time of the shoot outs. "Is there a penalty for heat stroke?" someone joked.

Merrill's "new blood" performed well, with 2nd place score of 47 was Terra (originally from Vancouver, but her first time at GOLF-O-RAMA) and in 5th place with 52 was Chris Stamm, and Robby Russell in 6th with 53. Dave H. won the "Pie Hole" for the 2nd year in a row, this time in a five person shoot out on hole #14. And Sarah Meadows took home the Courier Coffee from hole #5 in a head to head shoot out with Willow McCormick.

"She was a fierce competitor" said McCormick of Meadows. Both scored a hole in one to meet at the shoot out, and then tied with 2 strokes, and then tied with 3 strokes, and then tied with 4 strokes! The crowd grew around hole #5 as the battle continued, with Meadows then returning to par and taking the win. "She bested me," McCormick said, "But she better watch out next year."

Congratulations to all the prize hole winners and to dalas verdugo, winner of the 4th Annual UrHo Classic. Next year promises to be even bigger than ever!

After the final event at Ladd's Inn both Switzer and McCormick were tied, and with the clock ticking neither had the opportunity to gain extra points from drinking. As the rules state, "There is only one Gold Medal, and therefore only one winner," a tie-breaker event was chosen by the bartender. She placed a stack of saltine crackers in front of each contestant and gave them 30 seconds to eat as many as possible. McCormick ate two, but Switzer shoved four or five into his mouth. Switzer was unable to swallow all the crackers however, and McCormick was declared the winner. Switzer took the silver medal and Anja Verdugo won the bronze.

The Portland Heptathlon pits contestants against each on a battle of seven bar games at seven bars. Each player much also consume one alcoholic beverage at each location. Points were awarded based on place, and extra points could be earned for drinking more (and subtracted if you did not drink). The events and winners were:

Everyone seemed to be playing much better than previous season openers. There was a lot of communication and the game got pretty competitive. This might just be the year we finally play against a real team.

Kickstarter is a new website for funding ideas and projects. We're trying it out as a way to distribute the costs of buying some sporting equipment for UHAC:

UHAC Flag Football Gear

The idea is that we have 32 days to get people to pledge $36.66. If that happens we'll buy a 12-person flag football set and a football. If we only get pledges for $36.65 then no one is charged and we get no money. It's a pretty amazing idea for a website.

So, if you want to play Flag Football with UHAC this summer, please make a pledge!
