February 2007 Archives

It was an almost David and Goliath story yesterday when the UrbanHonking Athletic Club faced off against the Cheetahs FC. While the Cheetahs have yet to win a game this season, the UHAC team was playing with only six of its ten members. This meant that there was only one man on the bench to sub out, and each team member was going to be playing a lot more minutes!

GENE BLOCKS PENALTY KICK!Additionally the Cheetahs seem to have hired a VP of Mergers and Acquisitions, as they had a number of new players and a very full bench. UrbanHonking Athletic started off very strong scoring the first three goals. First from Curt Kentner, followed by Scott Sherman, and an almost mean-spirited goal from John Afryl. The Cheetahs finally answered with a goal of their own which may have upset UHAC keeper Gene Merrill who flagrantly shoved one of the Cheetahs newest players who he felt was crowding him. This resulted in a penalty kick for the Cheetahs which was amazingly blocked by Gene in his signature "spastic" defense tactic. Ryan Wise then scored UHAC's fourth goal. Scott was taken out in an illegal slide, which allowed UHAC to try the penalty kick, and Scott kicked it in! The Cheetahs got one more, and that was the first half, ending in Cheetahs 3, UHAC 5.

The pressure was applied in the second half as the lack of subs noticeably slowed UrbanHonking Athletic. Even so they managed to score the first goal of the second half, a great shot from Josh Berezin, which was quickly responded with a header from the cheetahs that Gene was unable to stop. At this point the score was 6 to 4, with the Cheetahs working for the comeback. Scott and Josh both fired shots into the net, dropping the Cheetahs morale as UHAC was up 8 to 4, but in the final minutes the fatigue started to set in and the deep bench of the Cheetahs was able to score two more, the last in the final four seconds! But even this effort was too little too late as UrbanHonking Athletic ended the night as victors with an 8 to 6 win over the Cheetahs.

Minutes after the game Josh Berezin was home backing for his upcoming trip to Ecuador, where he will be next week when UHAC faces the Legion of Doom in the final match of the season. With Peter still out as well, UHAC will be undermanned but in high spirits for the last game.

bee.jpgMonday, Feb 19th @ Mississippi Pizza: Spelling Bee

Every Monday Mississippi Pizza hosts a spelling bee. They have 17 people sign up and get on stage, and then it's a battle of the brianiacs as they eliminate those of us who never went to college. They have prizes, and everyone drinks beer, and it's a lot of fun.

Next Monday, the 19th, UrbanHonking is going to flood the place and try to take up a majority if not all the spots. So if you are good at spelling, please get to the Mississippi Pizza Pub by 6:45 so you can sign up! The spots go pretty fast. I think it costs $2.

Let me know if you can make it and plan on competing! (kmikeym@kmikeym.com)
