November 2006 Archives
We had quite the morale-shattering loss against The Starters, a team that played very aggressive and physical, who beat us 12-5. Initially we expected a win beacuse they have a number of young kids on their team. While they did sub their keeper with a young kid a few times, the other youngsters were benched for most of the game and their more experienced players applied the pressure and dominated the game. (video coming soon)
So in the face of such a crushing loss, we took action and rented the futsal court for a Sunday practice. It went well and we ran through some drills for most of the hour, then played a little scrimmage. It was my first time out on the "grass" and it was a lot more fun that I expected. I was also much more tired and sore afterwards than I expected.
The full schedule is now online broken down by individual team (our next game is Thursday the 30th at 8:10 pm when we play team Relentless.
I am expecting a victory, and I would recommend this game to people who want to watch as it will be the first time we play in uniform!
The UrbanHonking AC faced off against AC Felonious Kick last Thursday and left with a morale boosting 12 to 7 victory. We have a winning record! The day before the game we got confirmation of our ninth player, Curt Kentner. He and Josh Berezin had not been at the two previous practices, but proved instrumental in our victory.
The player of the game was Tosh Tambe, who scored four of the twelve goals!

Right behind him was Time Coulter and Scott Sherman with three goals each, and Ryan Wise made two. Why the tricky Felonious Kick did manage to sneak seven goals by Gene Merrill, he did an amazing job, taking shots in his chest, face, legs, and staying high energy and feeding the ball to strategically placed places. He makes more appearances in the highlight reel than any other player.

UrbanHonking is proud to present the UrbanHonking.com AC, our first official sports team playing in the Portland Futsal League.
Futsal dates back to 1930 when the indoor 5 on 5 style was played in Uruguay and Brazil. Originally governed by its own body, Futsal is now run by FIFA. The main differences in Futsal other than the number of players (5 compared to 11) are that Futsal is played with a ball that is smaller and heavier, and there are no walls (as is typical with indoor soccer). With the smaller field size this makes for a very fast paced game.
The UrbanHonking AC is playing its inaugural season in the Men's Division 3 League, with the first game being played on November 9th against AC Felonious Kick. We had our first practice this past Sunday and I spent some time getting to know the players:

With only eight confirmed players we do have room for two more on the roster. Interested players should contact Ryan Wise or Mike Merrill (or post here in the comments).
The UrbanHonking AC plays a total of eight games each against a different team; AC Felonious Kick, The Starters, Relentless, Wendy's Flyers, Dudes FC, Legion of Doom, Astro Glide, and Samba Boys. The top two teams at the end of the season play for the division championship, and the winner is promoted to the Division 2 league.
