Team Wall Ball

From left to right: Jonah "The Whale" Bechmin, Claire "L is for Karate" Evenshire, "Thumbs Up" Shrodo, El Capitan J.D., "Willis" McCormick, and Mike "I have a pet shark" Merrins.

Wall Ball is a violent every-man-worman-and-child-for-them/theirselves game which involves throwing, catching, and hurting your opponents.

We played for a long time, then had a tournament style elimination which came down to "L is for Karate" representing North Portland and "I have a pet shark" repping for Northwest. The mean streets of Trendy Third went home the winner on this hot Sunday evening, and some are wondering if Mike's tactic of shrieking like a baby and avoiding the ball completely are really so bad.

Island Green$ Mini-Golf

Steve Schroeder, Jason Anderson, and Mike Merrill played an intense 18 holes at the excruciating painful Tualitin course, Island Greens. Each hole is modeled after a famous "full-size" course, making this one of the most difficult miniature golf courses in the country.

To "make things more interesting" the participants agreed to put up $20.00. Actually, it was two $10.00 bets. The player with the best score would win half the money, and the player with the best "match play" would win the other half.

Match play is how the PPA plays there semi-finals and finals every year, and it can cause each game to be a real nail-biter. Rather than total strokes counted, each hole is counted as a match, and winner of each hole gets a point. This means that if you scrub out with seven strokes on a hole, you are still down only one match, or point.

So, the real question is "Who Won The Money?" Let's take a look at the scores:

Hole Name Par KMM JPA SPS
1 Disneyworld 4 2* 3 7
2 Spyglass Hill 4 4 3* 3*
3 Breckenridge GC 4 4 4 3*
4 Edgewood 5 4* 5 4*
5 Pebble Beach 3 3* 4 4
6 Disneyworld 4 5 3 2*
7 TPC Woodlands 4 4 4 3*
8 Pebble Beach 4 3* 3* 4
9 TPC Sawgrass 4 3* 3* 4
Front 9 Total 36 32 32 34
Front 9 Match Total 5 3 5
10 Edgewood 4 5 4 3*
11 Carmel Valley 4 7 3* 7
12 Pebble Beach 3 5 5 4*
13 Disneyworld 4 7 4 3*
14 Doral Spa & Resort 4 4 6 3*
15 Harbor Town 5 7 7 5*
16 Spyglass Hill 4 4* 7 4*
17 TPC Sawgrass 3 5 3* 4
18 Pebble Beach 5 7 7 5*
Back 9 Total 36 51 48 38
Back 9 Match Total 0 2 7
18 Hole Total 72 83 80 72
18 Hole Match Total 6 5 12

So Steve Schroeder ended up the ultimate champion and he won $40.00. Congrats Steve. We'll meet again...

Golf Team Results

Golf is a sport that I have never really played. However, with its origins in Scotland and as the sport of choice for the businessman, I find myself drawn to it. My lack of skill but general interest makes mini-golf a perfect substitute. While some may look at mini-golf as the peak of Mt. Irony climbed by the hipster and his sherpa, the game of miniature golf actually pre-dates the hipster and was formed in 1867 almost exclusively for women. While the sexist history has been overcome, it does present a somewhat unique opportunity for fair play between the sexes.

The UrbanHonking Athletic Club made a recent trek to play 18 holes of mini-golf. Realizing that the novelty stylings of the obstacles tend to allow players to feel like the game is less than serious, each player put $5.00 into a pool. The winner would take home $30.00 and 2nd place $10.00. Additionally, with the eight players split into two teams of four the team captains, Mikey and Steve, placed an additional $15.00 wager on the team result.

A hole-by-hole rundown would prove a tad tedious, so we'll skip right to the results. Par for all 18 holes was 41.

Steve's team scored a total of 229. Steve: 56, Claire: 63, Rebecca: 53, Josh: 54.

Mike's team scored a total of 212. Mike: 45, Nicole: 61, Jona: 55, Cabel: 49.

So Mike won the $15.00 team bet as well as the $30.00 individual bet. Cabel won the $10.00 2nd place bet, and spent it on fireworks.

UHAC Isn't TAC

After much consideration the Membership Committee has removed the point values regarding UHAC members. UHAC is not a contest, it's an athletic and social club.

Also, after much debate we have decided not to start an email notification list about events. UrbanHonking is a web-based community, so we'll just be posting about events on the web. You may of course use RSS to get updates.

Thanks for all your feedback. We're looking forward to seeing you at future events.
