Assessing Tsunami Relief Efforts
A Report from Southeast Asia
Congressman Earl Blumenauer
Last month, U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer toured Southeast Asia to see firsthand the toll of the deadly tsunami that ravaged Indonesia, India, Thailand, Sri Lanka and other countries on December 26, killing more than 160,000 people and leaving thousands more missing. How effective have aid efforts been in rebuilding the area's infrastructure? In what ways has the global community helped survivors recover pieces of their fractured lives? And how can our emergency systems, both domestic and international, be improved to mitigate the effects of future disasters?
You and your guests are invited to attend City Club's Feb. 25 Friday Forum, which is open to the public and will be held the Governor Hotel, 614 S.W. 11th Ave. Doors open at 11:30 a.m.; program begins at 12:15 p.m. and concludes at 1:15 p.m. Luncheon tickets are $16 for City Club members, $18 for nonmembers. Because of the holiday last Monday, the deadline to make luncheon reservations has been extended to noon tomorrow, Thursday; call 503-228-7231, ext. 102 or 103 to register. A limited number of coffee/tea table tickets will be available at the door for $5 each. General seating, also available at the door, is free for members, $5 for nonmembers.

Unwire Portland
(3) Comments so far...
Portland is ready to go wireless. Unwire Portland is a unique way of bringing wi-fi to our entire city. In an effort to build a citywide wireless network offering wi-fi and other wireless internet technologies, the City will issue an Request for Proposals (RFP) for network services. This RFP will bring together companies interested and willing to build a network that providers can make available to every Portlander.
Wanna know more? There's a public workshop on July 28 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at OAME where you can hear about the benefits and savings Portland can expect with this new form of public access. Sam will be talking a bit about why he and the rest of council unanimously support this project, too. You can also learn more on the project's website.

Debates! Videos! A talent show! Beer! Candidates Gone Wild, the most exciting political event in the history of Western Civilization, is back, and it promises once again to take your dull preconceptions of what a "debate" can be, smash them to tiny pieces and reassemble them into a night of improbably entertaining civics.
Like a well-placed punch to the gut of the political process, CGW, which is presented by Willamette Week in cooperation with the Oregon Bus Project, will knock the hot air out of the classic election-year debate-- you know, the ones where people are always quietly sitting and there's no swearing. Forget tilted stump speeches and baby-kissing: At CGW, candidates must run the gauntlet and risk it all to show potential constituents they're not just another bad haircut with a sound tax policy. Cheer teams of candidates on as they join in battle to prove their knowledge of all things Portland; learn how your favorite candidates really handle pressure as they are grilled by a hardened panel of skeptical Portlanders; stand in awe of candidates-- myriad unexpected talents (and, yes, they do have talents).
Tickets? $3

06:00 PM : Bus Project Party @ Machineworks
Politico Flyered by Rob W.
Portland's poltical subcultures are varied. High tech neo libertarians, cobb building city repairators, salmon saving watershed activists, sustainability wizards, tree hugger-climbers, green scare vandals, body mod anarchists, peak oilers, more, I'm sure. One fun group is the Bus Project. They are not afraid to play to win in the conventional system of electoral politics. They travel around the state in their biodiesel-fueled silver tour bus, registering voters in key districts, and then on election day, they get them to vote. Their guiding principle is the Dean Axiom - that elections are determined by disenchanted non voters in their 20's. For all this hard work door to door, they celebrate yearly, and raise operating funds, with a bash.
The party Drive begins at 6 with a VIP event, then gets fully in gear at 8 with bands Liv and the Warfield Project, The Retrofits, Justin Carroll and the Time Being as well as Calvin Johnson. Later mad dancing ensues with DJ’s Ben and Ravi. They will also show the results of their competition to make a video about the Bus.
6PM VIP Event $125, 8PM Party $18/9 students at Machineworks warehouse NW 14th and Marshall

Wonky, yes. But in politics, a ray of light is worth much more than the all of the fear and loathing which passes today for leadership. Thus the thesis of this Illinois senator's book "The Audacity of Hope". Unfortunately this Seattle reading and booksigning sold out 2500 seats at the Banaroya concert hall in a day rock star-style. What's the fuss? A lot of people want this guy to run for president. Hopefully we'll see him talk in Portland soon. Event details.

The merry changesters who are the Bus Project are known for making politics fun while not making fun of it. Actually getting things done.
Tonight some serious fun may ensue at a public viewing of the State of the Union speech by our feckless President. There will be plenty of beer to cry in over our disastrous foreign policy, our copious borrowing, civil liberties and privacy erosion, warming denial, and the making of a Western theocracy. The bus kids are devising games for the speech too.
Here's hoping for a reality based speech, otherwise God help us!

01:00 PM : Benefit for Political Change Using Media @ Yoga Shala
Politico Flyered by Rob W.
Everyone complains about the state of the world but what are they doing about it? Here is one approach. Invite college students from around the country. Immerse them in a summer-long program in Portland. Explore deeply political and social change dynamics; how they can be moved by media. Finally turn the participants loose on their own projects: documentaries, blogging, podcasts, working in non profits, or in the government itself. Repeat, building a network of powerful activists.
The participants get college credit, the tuition is a free ride, the work itself, intense and world changing.
All this takes money, and to raise it consider an afternoon of yoga and a silent auction of things like a Flex-Car membership, Kayak lessons, home repairs, dinners, real stuff. Yoga classes are $8 and you can choose from Kripalu (1PM), Moving with Attention (2PM), Kripalu (3PM), Vinyasa (4PM). At 5:30PM the silent auction winners will be announced.
The Northwest Institute for Social Change also needs hosts for the students and internship opportunities, so take a look at http://nwisc.com/program/ to find out more.

07:30 PM : Protecting Political Rights in the Digital Age Talk @ Reed
Politico Flyered by Rob W.
Do you vote? There are many around the world dieing to do so. The lesser of evils dilemma plagues us here sometimes but no one would argue that vote counting should not be transparent and accurate. But with computers counting the vote, how can that be guaranteed. This is one of my issues and an area in which I have made original contributions.
Tonight "Does Not Compute: Protecting Political Rights in the Digital Age" is a talk by Nelson Pavlosky. You might not recognize the name, but perhaps you have heard of the internal memos from Diebold exposing shoddy and insecure software in their touch screen voting machines including those used in Florida in the 2000 presidential election (hello Iraq!!). One of those machines gave Al "Global Warming" Gore a negative 16,022 votes. Bush won the election with a margin of 537 votes. Diebold tried to prevent Internet Service Providers from hosting websites and blogs with the memos under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Pavlosky sued Diebold for misusing the Act to censor publication of the memos and won! He speaks at the Reed Psych Building Room 105 7:30PM free

Featured will be a huge figure in the field David Sirota, who is a progressive political strategist, consultant and blogger too. Are the days of door to door hand shaking and baby kissing over? Blue plate dinners replaced by PayPal? TV by slow as mud Flash-y web sites. An unholy alliance between web 2.0 and politics? Do MySpacer's and Second Lifer's actually vote in the default world? 07:00 PM : Debate Club @ Rontoms
Politico Flyered by kmikeym
Via Blogtown:
Friends! If you haven’t already heard, we here at the Mercury have teamed up with those titans of voluntarism and civic engagement at the Oregon Bus Project for a new monthly series called “Debate Club.”
We’re pretty freakin’ thrilled about it, as the events we’ve done in the past (our charter review forum and digital politics) have been fun and engaging, and a bit messy around the corners, the way any drunken political discussion should be.
The series is kicking off this Tuesday, June 26, at rontoms (600 E Burnside) at 7pm. As always, this shebang is all abut dialog, democracy, and drinking—in fact, that’s the tagline. This month’s issue is about the little-discussed topic of immigration. I know there hasn’t been much about it in the news lately, so if you’re a little under-informed, it’s okay—we’ll help fill you in. We’ve got a great panel lined up, which I’ll tell you about tomorrow, but suffice it to say that no matter how much you think you know about immigration, you’re going to hear some new perspectives.
We’d love to see you out. It’s free—of course—and you can stick around with us afterward to talk about immigration, or whatever else is on your mind. Fun!
Before that, though, on Sunday afternoon, the Portland Immigrant Rights Coalition is organizing a rally and march to show support the families of the workers deported in the Del Monte immigration raid. It starts at 2pm in front of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office at 511 NE Broadway.

07:00 PM : Kristof on Darfur @ Temple Beth Israel
Politico Flyered by Rob W.
"He did not think of himself as a tourist; he was a traveler.
The difference is partly one of time, he would explain. Whereas the tourist generally hurries back home at the end of a few weeks or months, the traveler, belonging no more to one place than to the next, moves slowly, over periods of years, from one part of the earth to another. Indeed, he would have found it difficult to tell, among the many places he had lived, precisely where it was he had felt most at home. ... another important difference between tourist and traveler is that the former accepts his own civilization without question; not so the traveler, who compares it with the others, and rejects those elements he finds not to his liking."
- The Sheltering Sky Paul Bowles (c) Harper Collins
Beyond the traveler is the world changer. NY Times journalist Nicholas Kristof is one.
He won his first Pulitzer for reporting on the ground the Chinese Democracy Movement. Those 1989 events are the reason that search engines in China are censored today.
Reporting on human rights issues worldwide, Kristof has been an early and consistent voice on the tragedy in Darfur, Sudan, for which he won his second Pulitzer.
It can be depressing to contemplate these large problems, so many people avoid them. Consider this, talking about it and writing letters for Amnesty is easy, and it is fun. It's also an inspiration to see someone like Kristof who didn't need to get involved, take this on and make a difference.
Sponsored by Amnesty International, Kristof speaks at the Temple Beth Israel 1972 NW Flanders 7PM Free

07:00 PM : Cars v Bikes Debate @ Rontoms
Politico Flyered by Rob W.
I like the Bus Project. They put fun into politics. If it is fun, people will vote. That's one way to change the world. I've put a lot of energy into elections, sometimes at great personal risk. If you doubt the importance of voting, check the recent supreme court decisions. A few more thoughtful votes in Florida and we wouldn't be in Iraq. The list goes on.
One way the Bus Project makes it fun are some light hearted debates. Tonight's is on the relationship between gas powered and people powered transport. Cars v bikes. An upbeat atmosphere. Plenty of drinks and conversation all around. Moderated by Sam Adams, who is responsible for Portland's City Transport Department.
The bike team is Johnathan Maus founder of the excellent bikeportland.org blog and Johnathan Bricker, Policy Director and Executive Director of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance.
The car team is Mel Zucker of the Oregon Transportation Institute and Sreya Sarkar of the Cascade Policy Institute. The Cascade Policy Institute is a conservative think tank responsible for policy innovations such as counting hatchery fish to determine if wild salmon are threatened with extinction under the Endangered Species Act. (hatchery fish = no extinction) They are very effective at what they do.
Arrive early, for the last debate, the billion bikes engulfed every bike rack around.

But the raucous democracy showdown continues this month when we dig into issues surrounding Gentrification, Displacement and Revitalization in Portland. Metro President David Bragdon will be keeping the peace as we get nitty gritty into the politics of neighborhoods.
BIG apologies to all of our excellent Bus riders who are under 21! The OLCC got all bureaucratic on us last month, and while we wade through their web of rules we need to keep it 21 and over. Don’t worry, we’re working hard to get you youngins back in so we can debate the OLCC together.
