06:00 PM : Opening Party @ Portland Art Center

Visual Arts / Architecture Flyered by Rob W.

"All I want is everything, and I want it now" seems the Portland Art Center's meme for June, as demonstrated by this show of shows which fills the Goldsmith Building's warrens, Louvre-like. 10,000 square feet is a quarter acre of space, and for the official opening, it will be filled. Comutatus is Oregonian editor Barry Johnson's installation. Gallery Guide exhibition I is a group show. OCAC students show upstairs. Jason Frank and Andy Brown curate Hexasion, a video and sound installation. Jeff Fontaine presents "Entropy and the Arrow of Time", paintings on steel. The art center also releases its Gallery Guide covering 187 Portland visual arts spaces. It's a party too, with music by Vagabond Opera and DJ Stylish. Catering by Pasha. Admission $5. But get this: if you become a member of the Portland Art Center, you get in for free, and also into many more things free throughout the year. How much? Well normally it's $35 a year, but for this one night only - "I can't save you money if you don't see me today" - it's $25 for the most inexpensive membership. Of course, you can contribute more..up to the stupendous member level! www.portlandart.org 32 NW 5th 6-midnight, art earlier, party later.

08:00 PM : PORT 1 year anniversary party @ Apotheke

Party (Launch/B-Day/Etc.) Flyered by kmikeym

The Event: The Eurotrash Bash, 8:00 PM June 15th at Apotheke · 1314 NW Glisan, Suite 2A (Upstairs)

Come over, get your Gjetost on, meet PORT staffers and try some Zwak Unicum as you listen to the Europhile sounds of DJ van Dis.

About PORT: PORT www.portlandart.net has been noted internationally as an innovative macroblog, purposefully evolving the popular blog format into a serious forum for visual art information and discourse. With 8 paid staffers (though it’s still a labor of love and a public service) the site provides nearly daily updates, often with insider information that had been previously difficult to acquire. Also, all three of PORT’s critics have been published nationally or internationally outside of PORT as well.

By combining the skills of 8 savvy writers, with good design and the blog format Portland has achieved strong international voice (just google “Porland Art”).

Portland’s art scene has international exposure through PORT. PORT was Co-founded by Jennifer Armbrust of Motel Gallery and Jeff Jahn (curator & critic) and is supported by Portland galleries and visual art institutions.

Announcing: PORT's 1st Annual Pretentious Art Writing Contest:

PORT may be serious but we wanted to give our readers a chance at a little bit of fun. In conjunction with PORT’s 1st anniversary we are announcing our first annual "Pretentious Art Writing Contest." Simply give us your most craven and pedantic prose somehow remotely related to art (either real or imagined) by emailing it to jeff@portlandart.net on or before June 14th (a shadowy league of judges will decide). Yes you get points for name dropping but only to a point. The winning entry will be published on PORT and receive a dinner for two, complements of Le Happy, where you can feast on the sarcastically undermined pretenses distilled into their legendary Le Trash Blanc crepes. We will announce the winner of our pretentious art writing contest at the Eurotrash Bash.

01:00 PM : Street Party with the Sprockettes @ Free Geek

Party (Launch/B-Day/Etc.) Flyered by Rob W.

While geeks have been out of fashion, then in, free never goes out of style.

I think my earliest awareness that there was such a thing as an environmental problem was contemplating where there would be enough space to dump garbage. Well of course we've figured that out - in the ocean and in China. Although construction waste is the largest contributer to our landfills, generating 2 pounds of waste per square foot of construction, electronics waste, at 2-5% of the waste stream (see the photos of Seattle artist Chris Jordan 1,2,3), is rising the fastest. Oh yeah, it's toxic. That's why Portland is way in front of the curve with the Rebuilding Center and Free Geek.

Free Geek collects old computers. Volunteers assemble the working parts and load them with free software (Linux et al). In exchange for volunteering, you get a free computer to connect to the Internet, create your writings, mail, IM, maybe even start your own blog! You don't need any special skills to participate, they teach you everything you know. Meanwhile they are saving them from the landfill!

Those geeks like fun too, so from 1-7PM they host the Geek Fair! with entertainment by the Sprockettes, bands, sword swallowers, a dunking booth and a beer garden. Ever wanted to smash a printer with a sledghammer and YouTube it? You can there. Plenty of kid friendly events too. Details: http://www.freegeek.org/geekfair/index.html

In a related note, Dell has announced free home pickup and recycling of all Dell equipment. Since the company has a record of the exact materials that went into making each piece of equipment, it can efficiently separate materials for recycling.

08:00 PM : Art Organism Launch @ Wonder Ballroom

Party (Launch/B-Day/Etc.) Flyered by Rob W.

Art Organism launches with a performance by Small Sails, an experimental set by Courtney Taylor-Taylor and members of the Dandy Warhols and a video by Swiss artist Pipilotti Rist. Rist is known for making art at the the intersection of pop culture and identity. She played in the Swiss art-girl-rock-band Les Reines Prochaines, one of whoms performances is described as a: "big, thick cake of bodypoems, scientific lectures, tricks, sounds, lightgames and songs. It's a performance about dangers, miracles and early history". Recently Rist was the artistic director of the 2001 Swiss National Exibition and responsible for curating into that show Scofidio and Diller's building on the lake constructed entirely of fog and documented in their book Blur:The Making of Nothing. Rist is represented by Hauser & Wirth of London, the gallery also of Jason Rhoades, the subject of Organism's next art exhibition.

Organism creates a conversation between creative artists, designers, engineers, filmmakers, architects, ecologists, musicians, entrepreneurs and scientists. Organism engages artists and creative people of international reputation through existing personal networks. In turn, the creative networks that touch Organism expand, becoming more richly interconnected.

Tickets are $15 in advance and available at the Wonder Ballroom box office. Artists in any field may become members for the coming year - it's included just this night in your admission. Early - Doors 7:30, Show at 8.

A festival at a truck stop. OK.

"Beer. BBQ. Hot Rods. Choppers. Customs. Rat Rods. Clothing. MUSIC on 2 stages... One stage will be outside on 2 flatbed trailers, rawkin' the beer garden and the show... Inside, a fully stocked bar, complete with dance floor, pool tables, and plenty of room on stage for the music event of the summer in Portland:
Gates open at noon, first band @ 2pm, goes on until 1am

BANDS:

JESSE DAYTON
THREE BAD JACKS (SPECIAL PORTLAND APPEARANCE - 7PM!!!)
BLACKOUT RADIO
THE SKIRTCHASERS
EAT YOUR HEART OUT
SHAWN HAWKINS AND THE OFFENDERS

$12 ----For more info (503) 345-0300

The Ponderosa lounge at Jubitz 10310 N Vancouver Way, Portland, OR (right off of I-5 near Portland Meadows and the Portland International Raceway)

Now those truck stops paid a lot of money to remodel a Masonic Temple into the Art Museum contemporary art wing, so I say, live and let live.

Trick or Vote, today I say both, as long as they are not dirty tricks! If you know me, you know real democracy is a passion worth life risking. For reasons far far different than the current administration proposes, in fact, antithetical.

The Bus Project registers Oregon voters then encourages them to vote, the Dean strategy. Today join them visiting Oregon voters and encouraging them to get their vote by mail ballots in to count. Later in the evening they throw a great costume party at the Crystal Ballroom with Thomas Lauderdale and China Forbes, Quivah and March Forth. http://www.myspace.com/trickorvote Doors 7:30 $13

Holocene Presents...
DJ Beyonda

DJ BJ

Holocene is proud to continue our annual tradition of insanely buckwild New Year's parties with this 100% solid throwdown featuring PDX's premier partyrockers DJ Beyonda and Copy. As anyone who's witnessed Beyonda can attest, this lady's patented blend of current crunk and party rap, early 90s jams, live mashups, and dancepunk is pretty much completely undeniable; if this woman doesn't make you dance till your shirt's soaked, you're most likely not paying attention. She's also one of the only non-band recepients of Willamette Week's coveted "Best New Band 2006" awards, a distinction she shares with her co-star in tonight's festivities, Copy. Comprised of one Marius Libman, a keytar, and a laptop, Copy's signature 8bit dance jams have won him a rabid (no, really) following all over Portland, as evidence by the recurring trend of rabid pogodancing pretty much everywhere the man plays. He's joined tonight by big-beat gogo-live-electro duo Dat'r and the twisted dancepop of Flaspar. Add in one of the most kind and capable venue staffs in the city and the general warm, family vibe of Holocene, and you've got a the perfect recipe for a very special night.

06:30 PM : The Back Room @ Podkrepa Hall

Party (Launch/B-Day/Etc.) Flyered by kmikeym

On Monday, July 16, the back room closes this season with a big book launch. We've just published a 500-page anthology that collects all the original essays and art work commissioned by the back room over the last two years and adds a little more from other back room guests. It's published by Clear Cut Press (and designed by Tae Won Yu, who designs all the Clear Cut books).

The launch party is at Podkrepa Hall, 2116 North Killingsworth, 6:30 pm and on. Curtis Knapp and Marriage Records will showcase live music all night (he's got a Marriage compilation that he's launching that week, and might have for sale at the party) there will be a "back room open mic," at which anyone in the room can interview anyone else for five minutes; great food and drink, plus the book. Admission is $8, or free if you buy a book ($15).

One other note: the book is dedicated as follows: "This book is dedicated to all the investors in ripe—those who invested money and those who invested their time and skills, often at considerable cost—in the hope that they will get to enjoy some of the tremendous cultural capital (still growing) that their investment set in motion."

So, anyone who ever worked at ripe, or invested their money in it, gets a free copy of the anthology, and free admission to the party.

On July 18th at Branx (320 SE 2nd), PRA will host SNAP!, free, 21 and over show from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. to pump up the jams of the early ‘90s. Think Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, Reality Bites, Vanilla Ice and Madonna’s cone bra. Pay homage to Sir Mix A lot’s “Baby Got Back,” Wayne’s World and the rise of Snoop Dogg. It’s a DJ dance party with a “Downtown Julie Brown” style host, new guests every month, dance contests and podcasted interviews. If your aging hipster bones can still do The Running Man, The Whop, Kid 'n' Play or that jiggle thing across the stage that MC Hammer used to do, then you’ll fit right in. This month’s first show includes ‘90s inspired sounds from bands Lactatious and Sixteen Switches, along with resident DJ P Murder.

Party (Launch/B-Day/Etc.) Flyered by kmikeym

On Wednesday, August 22, Steve Schroeder and I can be seen in the premiere of a short documentary film which looks at online media (UrbanHonking) and paper media (The Mercury). The film was made by four students who took park in the Northwest Institute For Social Change, a summer program invented by former Mayoral candidate and one-time "news" editor of the Merc, Phil Busse. Steve and I are contrasted with our arch enemies, Scott Moore and Amy J. Ruiz of the Mercury. Scott's write-up on Blogtown does not mention us, but I think he is just scared.

07:00 PM : Netscape Memorial Service @ Backspace

Party (Launch/B-Day/Etc.) Flyered by kmikeym

Memorial Service For Our Friend, Netscape
Old Town Computers invites you to help us bid a fond farewell to an era.

January 15th, 2008 -- PORTLAND, Ore. -- As the AOL/TimeWarner Voltron finally draws the curtain on the last remaining vestige of the 90s internet euphoria, join Old Town Computers in a celebration of Web 1.0. The festivities will feature screenings of "A Brief History Of Memes" (dir. T. Bradford) & "Hackers: the Movie" and a round of .com bubble pub-style trivia. They'll be lubricated with the preferred beverage of online pet store startups: Beer. Revelry will transpire at the center of Portland's geek life, Backspace, on Friday, February 1st, beginning at 7pm. Dress up as your favorite pre-YouTube internet celebrity and receive a free beer for compromising your dignity.

"We're excited to take this chance to look back on those heady days," says Tyler Bradford, owner/operator of Old Town Computers. "The thing of it is, Netscape proved that what we geeks believed was important, in our basements and garages, could change the world for the better. It also proved we could get ludicrously rich by selling out at the right moment."

"A Brief History of Memes" is a hastily assembled collection of irony & nostalgia, evoking the irrational exuberance and short attention span of the day trading set. A highlight reel for nascent cyberculture's self-important phase, if your friends made you watch it before y2k, it's in there. Hackers, requiring little introduction, was the most misguided and ambitious attempt made by the mainstream to appropriate the signs of arcane nerdery.

Old Town Computers is a full service PC & Mac computer shop located in the heart of Portland's Old Town/Chinatown. We opened our doors in 2005. Our goal is to bring the highest quality technical support to the downtown Portland area. We have a deep, burning, somewhat unnatural desire to fix computers. Any computers. PCs, Macs, desktops, laptops, handhelds, servers, you name it. If it beeps, we're on it.
