Catch that Beat! is an all-ages independent musical festivus in its second year. I chose Astoria for the festival because of my personal history with the fishing town; I moved to Astoria when I was 6 years old from the east coast, then I moved away in the late '90s. I used to put on independent shows above my parents' gasoline station (BP-branded at the time) and in doing so I met some amazing people whom changed my life forever. Last lear in the early summer I visited Astoria to see my friends play in an old net shed. I decided then and there that I wanted to put on a mega-show in August and possibly do the same thing evey year. ENTER CATCH THAT BEAT!

ALPHABET/CITY: A WALKING TOUR WITH TOBIAS FRERE-JONES
New York's streetscapes have a definitive signature that has been captured in countless visual mediums. Lettering has been a central player in forming these urban environments that seduce the eye. But the grand inscriptions and humble signboards that penned figurative love notes to our city are vanishing amidst the wrecking balls of a building boom. Unique pieces of lettering are being destroyed, erasing the literal handwriting of New York City. Tobias Frere-Jones, renowned typeface designer and urban letter savior, has condensed years of research and exploration into a two and a half hour tour of the city's endangered art. He will guide walkers through Manhattan's alphabets, uncovering hidden gems and hardy survivors. Come raise a salute to the typographic voice of a city with its biggest champion.
The tour will start at the corner of Chambers and Centre, and go through Civic Center, Chinatown, Little Italy, and the Lower East Side.
Bring your walking shoes and your camera (and sunscreen too!)
Duration: 2 - 2.5 hours
Tour length: approximately 3 miles

Seattle - The Hedreen Gallery at the Lee Center for
the Arts is pleased to present videos from Matt
McCormick's future so bright series. Relentlessly
blurring the line between documentary, installation
and experimental film, McCormick has poetically
captured the spirit of the American West in his latest
body of work.
Shot on 16mm film and transferred to digital video,
McCormick’s images of forgotten and disregarded
spaces slowly create large-scale, moving portraits of
America’s contemporary Western landscapes. In
these videos, crumbling barns are positioned against
fading signs and abandoned houses, endless skies
frame vacant farmyards, and windmills turn tirelessly
in the distance.
By examining these forgotten spaces and iconic relics, McCormick creates a record of the decline of the
American Dream. But as a series, the videos act like a powerful landscape drawing of the contemporary
sublime. McCormick’s work is an ode to a falling empire, a swan song to what was, as well as a love song to
what could still be.
MATT McCORMICK:
Exploring the lines between video art and mass culture, Matt McCormick has screened work at film festivals, art
museums, and microcinemas around the globe, appeared on MTV and the Sundance Channel, and has
received positive reviews from Art Forum, The New York Times, and Film Comment magazine. As well as being
included in the traveling group exhibitions Uncertain States of America and Baja to Vancouver, McCormick's film
The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal was named as a 'Top 10 Film of 2002' by both The Village Voice and
Art Forum magazine. Currently, McCormick is represented by Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland, OR.
