THE ROOTS OF ORCHIS are a group of musicians who are a few steps ahead of the pack. While most of their high school friends were twiddling around with hardcore punk music in the mid-90s, they were experimenting with drum machines, synthesizers and multiple basses. What began as the desire to make "weird" music without vocals, turned into an exciting new band. While their early influences are fairly obvious (jazz, dub, early post-rock), they have quickly developed into a group that has a sound of their own, one which continues to evolve with each progressive release.
THE ROOTS OF ORCHIS have been playing together in various forms since 1997 and only recently (June 2002) graduated from college. They are now ready to make music their first commitment and to travel as much as possible while writing/recording in the downtime. They have completed two full US tours as well as countless trips up the West Coast and into Canada. THE ROOTS OF ORCHIS have shared a stage with the likes of Modest Mouse, Blackheart Procession, Pinback, Liars, the Rapture and Tristeza among others.
Their third album, Some Things Plural, was recorded with prominent engineer Rafter Roberts, and was released in February 2002. THE ROOTS OF ORCHIS have definitely come up with their most mature album. Some Things Plural is a combination of beautiful electronic sounds and live instrumentation. They use turntables, analog synths, drum programming and samples, along with jazz-inspired drums, multiple basses, and minimal guitars, breaching the boundaries between avant rock, instrumental hip-hop, and IDM.
In the months that followed Some Things Plural peaked on the CMJ charts at #129, and received numerous positive reviews from publications around the country. After endless touring, the band entered the studio once more in mid-2003, the result is their 2xCD upcoming release. Look for it, and more touring, in early 2004.

A NIGHT OF FILM and MUSIC
with MATT McCORMICK &
JAMES MERCER
Portland director Matt McCormick and musician James Mercer premiere their newest collaboration, TOWLINES (2004), an experimental documentary about tugboats. The two first worked together in 2002 when McCormick directed a video for Mercer's band The Shins and they found a fertile partnership. TOWLINES explores the visual and emotional characteristics of tugboats, those hardworking and invaluable contributors to our world and waterways who never seem to get their due recognition and glory. Borrowing the tone of a children's book, a bit of history, beautiful cinematography and a bright soundtrack McCormick give the heroic tug a loving salute. In addition to the screening, Mercer will perform a set of acoustic material while McCormick fills the screen with projected film loops and sequences and the evening will be rounded out with the screening of several of McCormick's earlier works, including GROUNDED (2004). ANNOUNCING A LIVE VIDEO AND SOUND PERFORMANCE
SERIES_12 / Translation of Sightseeing
by Yuko Nexus6 (sound) & Mariko Tajiri (image)
Wednesday, February 2 at 9:30 pm
Dunes
1905 NE Martin Luther King Blvd.
Web: www.onomato.org/series
Admission: Free (21+)
Translation of Sightseeing is a live video and sound performance by Yuko Nexus6 and Mariko Tajiri that explores and exposes the inevitable gaps, delusions, gaga thoughts, postcards, and stereotypes made by tourists in foreign countries.
Using laptop computer and cassette tapes, with real time and pre-recorded video, these two award-winning Japanese “tourists” are on a North American tour, sampling and projecting their digital media souvenirs for audiences all along the way.
Opening for Yuko Nexus6 and Mariko Tajiri will be Daniel Menche and Zachary Reno. Menche has just returned from Japan. Where he was working with (ex-merzbow) Kiyoshi Mizutani. He says he’s excited to share his new practice of the “low volume diet.” Zachary Reno is the curator of the SERIES_ events. This SERIES_ event is actually the ending marker of a year’s run of monthly events. As the event takes a break to try and refocus it’s sights.
A version of Translation of Sightseeing was recently released as a CD by the Portland-based label, Onomato will be on sale at this performance. Each CD features 350 original photos by Mariko, with music based on field recordings that Yuko made from the duo’s European tour last fall.

Translation of Sightseeing Biographies
Yuko Nexus6 Kitamura is a prolific and internationally recognized sound artist who embraces both hi-tech (laptop) and lo-tech (cassette) sound-making methods. Her compelling mixtures of evocative soundscape recordings, cheesy electronic muzak, and harsh noise loops range from cinematic and sublime to hilarious and wacky. Yuko Nexus6 has been the subject of numerous interviews and citations, most recently in David Toop’s historical survey of electronic music, Haunted Weather. In 2003 she received an honorable mention for digital music in Europe’s prestigious Prix Ars Electronica competition with Journal de Tokyo, her third solo album on Sonore Records.
Mariko Tajiri is a visual artist specializing in installation and video art who seeks to stir all the senses. She studied art at the Kyoto College of Art and the Ecole Nationale d’Art at Cergy-Pontoise, Paris. A recipient of a Philip Morris Art Award in 2000 and 2004, Mariko lives in Kobe and has shown widely in Japan and Europe.
Daniel Menche Daniel Menche has established himself as a musician with a sense of focus and determination uncharacteristic in a genre known for its randomness and chaotic structure. Rather than creating “noise,” he strives for order and cohesiveness. His presentation of sonic structures is similar to the way a writer depicts a story, an allegory seems to arise, which uses confusion as a symbol for the imaginative process in its quest for beauty; aural intensity is not a representation of confusion or the chaotic, but a concerted effort to provoke the listeners imagination, to stimulate concerted effort to provoke the listeners imagination, to stimulate thought, generate intensely powerful sounds, and to inspire beauty. Attempting to avoid the theoretical aspects of music, menche’s sonic constructions enhance the mystery of confusion (in its tonal form) in an effort to stimulate the imagination.
Zachary Reno is an artist working with sound, video, sculpture and performance. He helped co-found the SERIES_ events in January 2003. He runs a label for sound works, Onomato, that has recently released Yuko Nexus6’s “Translation of Sightseeing”, and is working on a small box set of Portland based sound-art, field recording, and improvisational sound.

Dear media friend, did you know Blitzen Trapper have a new album out? They do, and it rules, and tonight they’ll be celebrating it’s glorious existence, and they want to celebrate with you!
THE FIRST ALBUM: This is the second Blitzen Trapper album, following on their debut self-titled 2003 release, reviewed this very week as part of Pitchfork’s annual Found Sound feature. Pitchfork writer Marc Hogan describes the debut as “an off-kilter blend of stoned country-rock and spazzy neo-psych” but “far quirkier”. He goes on to say, “Remember Beck before his career devolved into magazine-pleasing genre exercises? These guys have the same bent, rustic perspective on popcraft, and a heap of ambition.” The album caused a bit of a stir here too, landing Blitzen Trapper smack-dab in the midst of Willamette Week’s Best New Bands list for 2003.
THE NEW ONE (FIELD REXX): The new album pulls from the same “freak-pop” framework, adding a little more melancholy and roughing up the edges a bit, while maintaining the solid-gold melodies and playful song structures we hold so dear. They recorded the whole thing themselves in their SE Portland studio, and released it themselves to boot. I’m biased in about fifty different ways, but I sincerely believe these guys are one of the very best things happening in Portland right now, and this album bears that out.
THE KINGDOM: Tonight’s release party also features two of Portland’s other best things: The Kingdom and The Graves. The Kingdom have been gigging relentlessly of late, and building up a deserved following. Their music combines catchy synth riffs with exuberant vocals and a touch of the ol’ art-school deconstructionism. They’re really fun to see live, and the recorded stuff (currently just two seven-inches and an EP) is worth hunting down.
THE GRAVES: We’re particularly lucky to have the Graves on the bill, given how rarely they perform in town, and how amazingly talented they are. Their sophomore album, Yes Yes Okay Okay, released on Hush Records, has been criminally slept on, and now’s as good a time as any for everyone to WAKE UP. Their music is lazy, sun-kissed downer-pop, perfect for drinking beer at noon in the park and reading depressing books. No really, they’re great!
CUM LAZER is just absurd.
THAT PITCHFORK REVIEW I WAS TALKING ABOUT: “The bass player (stand-up, naturally) for Portland, Oregon's Blitzen Trapper once described their sound as Neil Young meets Pink Floyd, but that's only half the story. "Freak-pop" might be a better descriptor, particularly given the parlance of our times. Sure, an off-kilter blend of stoned country-rock and spazzy neo-psych weaves into focus amid the glassy-eyed twang of tracks like "Texaco" and "Whiskey Kisser". But Blitzen Trapper are far quirkier, delving into everything from cracked indie lounge a la Pavement's "5+4=Unity" ("Trigga Finga") to hook-laden thrash-pop straight off Blur's 1997 self-titled effort ("The All Girl Team"). Woo-hoo, indeed. Remember Beck before his career devolved into magazine-pleasing genre exercises? These guys have the same bent, rustic perspective on popcraft, and a heap of ambition. There's no telling where 2004 release Field Rexx would have placed in my Top 50 if I'd heard it soon enough, but this debut is a fine introduction.” - Marc Hogan, Pitchforkmedia.com

((about housewarming))
Chantelle Hylton (Berbati's booking godess) and myself have been working on this for a while now, and the time has finally come to offically unveil our new monthly series: Housewarming! Inspired by Josh Blanchard's fantastic Church of Psychedelia series, Housewarming will bring that special PDX dance party / house show vibe to Berbati's once a month, while allowing local music geeks a chance to shed some light on their favorite bands.
Each month we'll be inviting a member of the Portland music community to "curate" our monthly Housewarming night. This person chooses which bands will play and also selects a DJ who will spin records between and after the bands, or DJ themselves.
Housewarming will take place the first Wednesday of each month. It will always be free and drinks will be discounted, so bring your broke friends, get drunk, see some great local bands you might not have heard of, and DANCE!
(( about the curator ))
Jessica Jones is an immensely talented songwriter who is equally comfortable crafting delicate indie-folk and adrenaline-rush art rock. She resides in Portland, where she runs a low-key, high-quality record label / mail-order distro called Stop n Rewind records.

Holocene is pleased to present a night of art-damaged pop featuring a special post-lecture appearance by acclaimed punk artist Raymond Pettibon and his band Crinkum Crankum. Blitzen Trapper's spastic and sunny psych-pop has been gaining some attention of late, including an appearance in Pitchforkmedia.com's Found Sound 2004 feature. Their recent CD release show, coinciding with their new album "Field Rexx", was a packed and very fun affair. Doris Henson is a likeminded group hailing from Kansas City. Their songs are hooky and dense, a kind of beefed up 60s pop that gets stuck in your head and stays there. Crinkum Crankum is the musical project of the aforementioned Raymond Pettibon and visual artist Hans Weigand, both of whom will be speaking at PICA the day before this show. Please join us for a multilayered night of art, rock and myriad permutations thereof.
BLITZEN TRAPPER: "The bass player for Portland, Oregon's Blitzen Trapper once described their sound as Neil Young meets Pink Floyd, but that's only half the story. There's no telling where 2005 release Field Rexx would have placed in my Top 50 if I'd heard it soon enough, but this debut is a fine introduction." - Marc Hogan, Pitchforkmedia.com (reviewing the debut album)
DORIS HENSON: Doris Henson came together quickly and purposefully. In March 2002, Matthew Dunehoo wrote, recorded, and introduced an eight-song basement demo to bassist Byron Collum, a former member of Kansas City's Giants Chair, and drummer Wes Gartner, a complete stranger. Later additions included guitarist Jamie Zoeller and trombonist Mike Walker. These basement recordings indicate a desire to emulate and craft songs more closely akin to the art rockers of the late 60's and early 70's -- songs that stand out as colorful narratives and exciting pieces of music.
CRINKUM CRANKUM: For more than twenty years, Raymond Pettibon has made ink drawings which often combine cerebral texts with a two dimensional comic book image. Pettibon is a cult figure among underground music fans for his early work associated with the Los Angeles punk rock scene, specifically SST Records. Initially distributing his work on a street-level, with stapled together zines, Pettibon's work serializes a long gone era populated by hard boiled g-men, euphoric surfers, suffering philosophers and dames from men's magazines. Pettibon's subjects are often presented with equal amounts reverence and criticism.
Hans Weigand, born 1954, lives and works in Vienna. Hans Weigand's artistic strategy is based on taking banal everyday phenomena and ways of living that are considered average, and humorously manipulating and continuing their language of forms. With his background in the world of pop, his way of dealing with the codes of the everyday show is both reflective and entertaining. The specific artistic technique he uses plays only a subordinate role in this, as he links photography and painting with video, music, performance or literature, and new fields of experimentation are constantly being added.

Puffy AmiYumi
7 p.m. doors, 8 p.m. show | $20 advance, $22 day of show | All ages
Japanese duo Puffy AmiYumi are more than just a chart topping group: much, much more. They are, quite simply, a cultural phenomenon.
Puffy AmiYumi's versatility and ability to continually surprise have given them a career longer than the average American pop idol or Japanese idoru, as they're called over there, and has allowed them to truly have a history, not just a catalogue. And that may have even surprised the members of Puffy AmiYumi themselves, who were strangers until the two were brought together by a record label and a management company.
In 1995, Tokyo-bred Ami Onuki and Osaka native Yumi Yoshimura had each learned about talent searches underway in Tokyo and decided to see how they might fare at them. Ami put together a demo for Sony, which had advertised for singers, and Yumi auditioned for a management company that was checking out a variety of performers, actors as well as musicians. After Ami sent her tape to the label, she was skeptical that anything would happen: "I just wanted to look at the rejection letter to see what they would put in the note to say sorry" she told a U.S. reporter. It turned out, however, that Ami, after being paired with Yumi, was just what they were looking for. Ami and Yumi meshed uncannily well as vocalists and they had a rapport that went beyond the merely professional: you could easily mistake the duo for siblings a la the Roches or Cowsills because of the way their voices blend. Performing in unison, they create a single, immediately identifiable sound that is very much their own.
Puffy AmiYumi's 1996 debut single, "Asia No Junshin" was a million-selling smash in Japan and launched mania for the duo there. Ami's and Yumi's predilection for well-worn tee-shirts and artfully ripped jeans became a much-copied style, and they were likely to be mobbed by fans if they set foot on Tokyo streets. Since then, they have sold millions of records in Japan alone, hosted a television variety show (Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa-Puffy), headlined arena-sized concerts, and inspired action-figure dolls and even a line of shoes. All of their singles has been licensed for high-profile commercials for such products as motor scooters, cosmetics, computers, and soft drinks. It might all seem crass if the music didn't tell a different even subversive, story about alternative culture meeting the mainest of the mainstream. As L.A. Weekly critic Jay Babcock put it, "Puffy AmiYumi is a contemporary female version of the Monkees with the popularity of 'N Sync and the homage/theft approach of '90s pop-recombinant cult heroes the Pooh Sticks"
One generally doesn't find 'N Sync and the Pooh Sticks mentioned in the same sentence, but that's the way it is in the no-rules world of Puffy AmiYumi. When they released their first stateside LP, Spike, American critics madly rummaged through their catalogue of comparisons, likening the duo to everyone from ABBA and ELO to the Cardigans and Stereolab. As you will soon discover, there is no sell-by date stamped on their material. In the world of Puffy AmiYumi, anything is possible: no style is taboo, no era goes unexplored, and no combination is too out there. All the sounds they love co-exist harmoniously in one inviting place. With a sound that appeals to young and old alike, Puffy AmiYumi are poised to achieve a level of stardom that no Japanese group has yet to reach.

Cosmic Skronk is a semi-monthly music series which will take place on the last Sunday of the month. The intention is to bring together creative underground music from all stylistic corners. A place where avant rock, noise, psych, indie pop jams, free jazz, and lo-fi progsters (to name a few) can freak out in an envirnoment conducive to experimentation. The focus will be musicains from the Portland area, but over time the series hopes to include acts from all parts. Cosmic Skronk is hosted by Dewey Mahood, previous organizer of the Improvisor's Collective (a series of shows and mini-festivals in Portland during 2000-2001), and member of Scuffle & Dustcough.
About Tonight's Artists:
Hustler White play theatrical, chaotic, energy rock. With duel vocal chord shredders, noise bombast guitar, childish keyboard, and unhinged drumming, the band comes across like Eno era Roxy Music as covered by the Boredoms.
Scuffle & Dustcough swing bipolar with short postpunk/no wave rockers, and extended neo late 60's psych epics using fractured guitar, heavy amplified cello, and short circuit robot drumming. This show is also the offical cd release for Scuffle's "Train Wine n' Smokey Pine."
Danava jams like they're from early Seventies England, with heavy doses Black Sabbath, Yes, and T. Rex mixing up a heady brew of keyboard and guitar riffage, and proto metal vocals. A bit like Dead Meadow in their awesome ability to sound both fresh and familiar simultaneously.

Swedish noise popsters Shout Out Louds don't so much embark on an opening track as they explode, sending sugarcoated shrapnel and glittery instrumental confetti through the speakers like a blasted birthday-party piñata. "The Comeback," lifts the listener into a stratosphere of fluffy guitar buzz, sky-high melodies, and Moog hooks that launch the band far above the mundane relationship blues frontman Adam Olenius describes back down on Earth. From there, the band keep their head in the clouds, with a fleet-footed pace that moves through everything from girl-group confections (matching peers like the Concretes) to the full heart-popping energy of the Arcade Fire and the innocent wonderment of the Flaming Lips. It's an impressive feat for a first album, a record that's hermetically sealed with hits, every song soaring as grandly as the last. JENNIFER MAERZ

And now for something different: Holocene is proud to present the premier of the multimedia electro-extravaganza that is FLESHTONE. Incorporating costumes, puppets, dance, and animation over pounding electro beats from the Snuggle-Ups’ Brett Whitman, FLESHTONE is a sex-positive feast for the senses. This is their first show ever, months in the making, and guaranteed to be a scene. Also performing will be Boston-based electronic musician / animator / arsty dude Noll, and PDX DJ favorites Sewwhat and Beyonda. Art, dance, music, tonight’s performance is all that with a dance party on top.
For more on the enigmatic FLESHTONE please read the following manifesto:
1. WE ARE NOT A "ROCK OPERA"
FLESHTONE is a group of 10+ very talented people who have constructed an ELECTRONIC/FASHION/SEX SHOW including animation, character builds, puppetry, filthy lyrics, costume changes, hydrotechnics, backup dancers, stage magic, ect. we make everything ourselves and we enjoy guest appearances.
2. OUR MANIFESTO: SLUTS VS PRUDES
the show for june 4th is cracky and shocking. our audience is fresh and unsuspecting. FLESHTONE has built a night to adjust morals swiftly and accordingly.
3. FLESHTONE IS A REVOLUTION
we've taken performance to a level that creams sexual orientation and personal inhibition. let us take that wet dream of yours, eat it, shit it out and fuck ourselves with it on stage. this makes you uncomfortable yet fleshy and venereal. we know. now dance!
4. NO EXAMS
like space, FLESHTONE has many levels. we don't expect everyone to understand. we only want to make you laugh, dance, and ejaculate.

Holocene invites you to a very special two year anniversary party featuring two torchbearers of the live dance movement, Out Hud and Tussle. The culmination of our extended weekend of celebratory activities, tonight’s show is guaranteed to be one of the parties of the year. The music on offer demonstrates how Holocene and new music in general have grown side by side over the last couple years. Where music used to be segregated into “rock” and “electronic”, “live” and “laptop”, a new fusion is emerging. Holocene has grown along with it, moving from a pure electronic dance format to an open-minded mix of bands, djs, and electronic producers – and everything in-between.
Out Hud is emblematic of this movement, fusing live instrumentation and machines in new and exciting ways. Tussle hail from our sister city to the south, San Francisco, merging dubby textures with deeply grooving beats for a warm, organic dance sound. Nudge are the Portland ambassadors in this new sound universe, slicing across rock, dub, and electronica to reveal ethereal emotional spaces. And let us not forget Bobby Birdman, Portland’s erstwhile laptop crooner, making a rare PDX appearance since relocating over a year ago. Please join us in ringing in a third year and reflecting back on two years of community and music.
OUT HUD: With Tyler Pope, Nic Offer and Justin Vandervoigen all playing in !!! and everyone in Out Hud wanting the maximize the excellence of their sophomore release, the process has been a long one. We believe that the final product proves that time was well-spent. After recording sessions in spring 2003 at National Recording Studios in Washington D.C. with Jonathan K. there was new music for Justin to mix. No more live drumkit, lots of machines. The girls singing. There is a taste of house, maybe even of Moroder. All we had to do is wait while the magic did its work. By the summer of 2004 music started showing up at kranky hq. While an agreement for licensing the new album in Europe was worked out with K7 Recordings in Germany the band added some overdubs at home and Justin mixed some more. On Feb. 7, 2005 the wait will be over as a single called One Life To Leave will be released. It features a track from the forthcoming album, a remix of that song that is exclusive to the single and a third, non-LP track. The second long playing Out Hud record is entitled Let Us Never Speak of It Again and will be released worldwide on March 21, 2005. The band plan to begin touring in April 2005 in the East Coast, South and Midwest portions of the United States.
TUSSLE: Kling Klang is the debut full length from Tussle. Their sound has been compared to King Tubby meets Chic meets Liquid Liquid meets Can. Progged-out disco dub? The band is composed of bass, drums, electronics, and another percussionist playing found objects...Don't think they are the typical disco punk crap you hear on the radio. This band is about a million times more organic and rhythm oriented than your average band. The lack of guitar and vocals definitely bring out the dub side and the double drummers definitely bring out the dance side. The result is one of the most original bands on the Troubleman Unlimited roster.
NUDGE: Nudge has been a working group for five years, centered around Brian Foote (who runs the Outward Music and Audra Glint labels), Paul Dickow (also a solo artist who works under the name Strategy) and Honey Owens, a member of Jackie-O Motherfucker and programmer at the Dunes Club in Portland. Nudge works through marathon improvisations and edits that cohese into perfectly formed future musics. Merging live instrumentation and singing with programmed material, Nudge play what most artists working in electronic music sequence. Maybe this is what accounts for the remarkable warmth at the center of Nudge's complex technologies.
BOBBY BIRDMAN: Bobby Birdman is the moniker of Rob Kieswetter, a send-back to the 60's, when surfers knick-named each other as would-be super heroes. It's an apt name insofar as Bobby Birdman makes west-coast music: laid back and spacious. His delivery is sweet, honest and charmingly off-kilter. I sank into a couch as I listened to him for the first time. He has an all-day-Sunday voice. The kind that, well, you could listen to it all day Sunday, or whenever for that matter. But Sunday suits him pretty good.

The Swords Project
A truly spectacular band has to be better than the sum of its parts. That's a tall order for Swords, the Portland band with six members who all bring a considerable amount of talent and songwriting prowess to the equation. And while they've flirted with transcendence on a debut album and an EP, both recorded under the name Swords Project, Metropolis is the sort of majestic achievement you'd hope for from a promising band that's just found the focus button.

The Planet The CD Release Party
Puff Puff Give, Copy, Visuals by E*rock
This party is in celebration of THE PLANET THE"S debut LP for Kill Rock Stars' crazy sister—label 5RC.
THE PLANET THE
"After seeing them live at Chop Suey the other night, The Planet The has just joined my list of favorites from down south. The trio—which includes Charlie Salas-Humaras from one-man band Panther on vocals—plays a mix of Liars-style post-punk, Make-Up-style theatrics, and pop-styled prog, with Charlie emoting into a vocoder and shaking his hips like he's the second coming of Prince, making as big a scene out of performing as he delivered as Panther. Backed by a rhythm section of keyboards/keytars and drums, the band's set was coated with an electronically dense, quirky sound, including their cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'I'm on Fire.'"

Why just dance to '80s music when you can Stray Cat Strut to the glow of new wave videos shown on a large projection screen? Dirty Projectors in...
THE GETTY ADDRESS
w/ E*Rock, World, The Wind Up Bird
Holocene is pleased to present Dirty Projector's The Getty Address featuring Dirty Projectors' nine-piece orchestra assembled to complete the vision of one Dave Longstreth.
THE GETTY ADDRESS
The Getty Address is part rock opera, part mini orchestra, part film screening, and part blowout cult happening. Mister Longstreth is previously known for solo-guitar tours and performances with the likes of Microphones, Adam "White Rainbow" Forkner (appearing tonight as one half of World), Bobby Birdman, Landing, Tyondai Braxton, and more. "One of the most prolific and unique indie singer/songwriters of the early 2000s" crows Allmusic.com, and fansite Pitchforkmedia.com calls Longstreth "a nobrow genius."
THE WIND-UP BIRD
As The Wind-Up Bird, Joe Grimm has released four cd's and toured the United States extensively, sharing the stage with the likes of The Microphones, Lightning Bolt, Oval, Landing, [[[VVRSSNN]]], Mono, Tyondai Braxton, Growing, Pleasurehorse, etc. Grimm has also performed live or on record as a member of many other bands: the post-rock chamber music of 33.3, the electronic lullabies of The One AM Radio, the lo-fi orchestral pop of Dirty Projectors, the glitch-folk of Lucky Dragons, and Glenn Branca's symphonic guitar ensemble.

Berbati’s is stoked to host the tour kick-off party for beloved Portland pop weirdos Blitzen Trapper. After a packed CD release show at the Pan and following on some much-deserved notice from the national press, Blitzen Trapper is finally (FINALLY!) setting out on their first ever West Coast Tour! The tour will see them bopping up to Seattle, where they’ll be honored with an in-studio performance on KEXP, then cruising on down to L.A. and everywhere in between.
This show also marks the first show in a long time from awesome bluegrass-inflected Joggers’ side-project Cajun Gems. With plans for more shows and recording in the works, tonight marks what may well be phase one in the Cajun Gems world-domination plan.
Last but not least we’ve got Please Step Out of the Vehicle, a young PDX band playing self-described “psych-pop in the forest that is inside yr NES” – which sounds rad to me. This will be an awesome show with lots of hometown love. Come out!
BLITZEN TRAPER: Blitzen Trapper play bent and occasionally manic country/psych/pop music. Their music combines solid-gold melodies with backwoods crackhouse surrealism and cheerfully subverted song structures, incorporating everything from Caetano Veloso’s hazy tropicalia to Stereolab’s electronic noodling, Bill Evans’ jazzy keyboard grooves, and Buffalo Springfield’s sun-kissed classic rock. The result is a playful mix of rustic songcraft and playful experimentation that will sit well with fans of like-minded artists such as Beck, Wilco, and Grandaddy. Their self-titled debut album was released in 2003, followed by a CD-R ep of blunted funk instrumentals in 2004, and FIELD REXX in 2005.
CAJUN GEMS: Cajun Gems began in 2000, in Portland, Oregon. They share members of the Joggers - but are not the same band. After a period of inactivity, Cajun Gems hope to play shows this summer. New recordings are also likely.
PLEASE STEP OUT OF THE VEHICLE: From their Myspace page: “Influences - Syd Barrett, Pavement, Bruce Haack, Ornette Coleman, Buddy Holly, Le Tigre, pixies, Lightnin' Hopkins, the Sonics, MC5, the 13th floor elevators, modern lovers, Miles Davis, vegan dog treats, extra ginger beer,ect,ect,ect... Sounds Like - Psych-pop in the forest that is inside yr NES.”

TIC CODE
Tic Code is an able-fingered instrumental prog band that flips figure-eights around guitar scales, noodles in unison, and flaunts it 'round your head like a helicopter.
-Julianne Shephard (The Portland Mercury)
VALEDICTION
Digesting reminiscence of thier lives and chasing renditions of visions far from now. Valediction saw it's light in early 2004 with pouring levels of shimmering guitar, songs, presence, and the kind of POP distinct enough to confront your insides. From the solitude of her secrets Theo, Tim, Chris, and David remain ensembled on the way to find your hearts and ears
THE TASTEFUL NUDES
Simultaneously the softest and loudest band from Vancouver, Washington. Their engagingly melodic offerings prove that instrumental music shouldn't mean "background music"; the songs at once commanding attention and refracting thought. The basis of their instrumental pop is the intuitive guitar and drums of the two founding members; lush, hopeful melodies coalesce with loose, tumbling percussion. Occasionally the rich, oceanic texture builds into a vociferous release. Loud or soft, though, the sound always has an immediate thoughtfulness not often found in a rock band.

Now here’s a rad way to spend a Wednesday night: come to Berbati’s see three exciting and crazy PDX bands for the cost of a cup of coffee, help one of those bands go on tour. ...Worms are just starting out and are totally riveting and crackling with energy. They do something unique and wild and it’s totally amazing to see Sam from the mellow Modernsate freaking the frikk out on his drum kit. These bands aren’t really the kind to have one-sheets and stuff (At least not yet) so I wrote the stuff below. Read on...
…WORMS: ...Worms are a new band featuring Sam from Modernstate and Dutch Flat, Matt from Dutch Flat, and two other guys from I’m not sure what bands. They play freaky spazz punk with screamy vocals and are totally exciting to see live. Word on the street is they’re about to release a 7” on the not-so-hardcore (but awesome) Marriage Records, which is pretty exciting and unexpected. Here’s how Sam describes them: “I'm also in a band called ...Worms. And that's with the pause, so the band's name isn't Worms, it's "...Worms." In that band I'm playing drums with my old friend Matt the bassist from Dutch Flat. It's fairly chaotic and weird and fun and loud and I get to do a lot of free jazz freakout drumming which is really fun for me, and I get to rock really hard.”
CHEVRON: I’ve seen Chevron a few times, the last time at a house party that was packed on hot. They play mathy rock that often gets compared to Hella but is a little more ambient/spacey to my ears. Lots of repeating, trance-like arpeggios, and herky-jerky rhythms. Super good band. Here’s their trippy bio thing.
GIANT BABY: Don’t know much about them save that the members used to be in Made for TV Movie and they play “ripping loud indie rock”.

08:30 PM : Daniel Menche, Jean Paul, Reno, GOD, GEESE, World @ Holocene
Music Flyered by kmikeym
DANIEL MENCHE
Daniel Menche has established himself as a musician with a sense of focus and determination uncharacteristic in a genre known for its randomness and chaotic structure. Rather than creating "noise," he strives for order and cohesiveness. His presentation of sonic structures is similar to the way a writer depicts a story, an allegory seems to arise, which uses confusion as a symbol for the imaginative process of total sound purity; aural intensity is not a representation of confusion or the chaotic, but a concerted effort to provoke and stimulate the listeners imagination by generating intensely powerful sounds and music.
JEAN-PAUL JENKINS Jean-Paul Jenkins plays music in Portland Oregon and the environs. He plays with Super Unity and the FJE trio amongst other things. Tonight he is really psyched to play thru a bigger PA than his living room affords.
WORLD World is Adam Forkner (white rainbow, jackie-o) and Honey Owens (nudge) playing multiple processed sound sources, including a laptop, vocals, and a guitar. The music is beautifully psychedelic and phenomenological.

At Dusk
Our music falls somewhere on the new and exciting "Indie Rock" spectrum influenced equally by Philip Glass, Sonic Youth, Romanian Gypsy Music (not a joke), Pavement, and The Byrds. For your amusement we shall now compare ourselves (somewhat seriously) to Mission of Burma, had they been from the West coast, fronted by a confused Colin Blunstone and Brian Wilson, with Jorge Ben, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and the Pace Twins go-go dancing, clapping out a beat, and cheering from the wings of the stage. Beyond these semi-truths, however, is the sound of a band comprised of three friends-from-childhood who know each other -- as people, and as musicians -- very, very well.
"From their hypnotic, off-kilter beats to their poetic lyrics, everything about this band seems very intellectual..."
Rollerball review
Some people act like stars. Some people see stars. But Rollerball I think might actually be stars -- the galactic kind, giant nuclear fusion engines firing atoms & light across the vacuum of the universe. Right now, of course, the five members of Rollerball are trapped in human form, mere dying bones, blood, & brain cells. Yet there are moments during every Rollerball album when it seems like they cease to exist. They have transcended gravity, time, space. They have become energy. - John Graham, Williamette Week

Dance about it.
The Juan Maclean review "Give Me Every Little Thing"
Juan Maclean--formerly John Maclean of Six Finger Satellite-- is responsible for creating DFA's most overt dance music. always looking back to a time when the lines between early house and electro weren't so rigid. "Give Me Every Little Thing" has got the early-80's hand percussion, disco-chant vocals, and synth fluttering all down pat, plus an inhumanly gigantic bass construction; it's nearly up there with playgroup's post disco masterpieces, and at five-plus minutes it still feels too short.
The Blow
I can't get enough of Khaela Maricich. She has worked with The Microphones, Mirah, & Parenthetical Girls making pop songs with small amounts of electric influence, "everything little thing she does is magic" even her blog site, this gal has a way with words that makes me melt.
1999
1999, is E*Rock(Audio Dregs) on vocals+machines, Charlie Panther from The Planet The and Josh Blanchard from Point Line Plane. The focus is on powerful, life-affirming, "hit" songs.
