UPDATE: Taking Place: A Summer of Programming Gets Underway

Sometimes it takes a little time to iron out the kinks! We apologizes for any confusion, and we're happy to relate that Taking Place has finished spraying the starch and we are pressed and ready for the prom.

A NEW BEGINNING:

The musical convocational that opens Taking Place will transpire from
6:00 to 7:00 pm at 425 3rd Avenue and Oak Street SE, at Marriage Records
(your host will meet you at the door).

The keynote will be sounded by:

Mount Eerie
Karl Blau
The Watery Graves

Participating audience members will then be accompanied by their hosts
on a stroll to 10th Avenue and Pine Street SE to join Dynamite Family,
Stephanie Snyder, Sam Gould, Matthew Stadler, and others for the general
carousing, beer, and discourse that marks the onset of this month-long plus
inquiry.

To repeat: music at Oak Street, 6 pm - 7 pm. Carousing, beer, and
discourse at 222 SE 10th, until late. Please join us.

Taking Place Opening Night Party (and Dynamite Family's Potential Energy)
6.30 pm
@ Correspondence Space
215 SE Morrison St. (Under the Northeast side of the Morrison Bridge)

Hosted by Disjecta Center for the Arts
w. Dynamite Family, The Watery Graves, Marriage Records, Stephanie
Snyder, Matthew Stadler, and Sam Gould

To kick off the start of Taking Place we have our friends from Grand
Rapids, Dynamite Family, in town to show off their project,
Potential Energy. For one night only Dynamite will exhibit Potential
Energy, a mobile, ever growing archive of unrealized projects from
arts collaboratives and individuals from the U.S. and abroad.

Along with this event we will hang out around the Lower South East
Side, barbecue, have a few drinks, commune with the surroundings,
enjoy the music of The Watery Graves, and talk about Taking Place.

ART LIVING Flyered by daniel

Drawing Party! Starts around 9PM and ends around 1AM, and people actually draw!
After drawing the group walks down the street and slamms beer at the TUBE. Sometimes people leave for an hour or two to catch a show.
Happens at the building with the huge neon reindeer sign on the west end of the Burnside bridge. the entrance is on the bridge. there is a string hanging out of a window above the door and you pull on it for someone to come down and let you in.

ART LIVING Flyered by kmikeym

Apotheke is hosting a multi-faceted audio/video event at the end of this month.

"ResonanCity"

+

"Pure Data Workshop for Sound and Vision"

March 28-30, 2006.

- Mar 28 - "ResonanCity"

ResonanCity is a live multimedia performance by Sara Kolster (NL, 1978) and Derek Holzer (USA, 1972). It has been performed live in Holland, Brazil, Poland, the former Yugoslavia, the Baltic States and at the Transmediale 05 festival in Berlin. Their Portland date is part of a limited North American engagement.

Both Sara and Derek find inspiration in the history of experimental cinema and electroacoustic music, as well as in contemporary video and microsound practices, and a variety of live sources such as photographic film and found objects are used to generate the visions and sounds.

Kolster and Holzer also reject the use of common, commercial production methods and the default, commercial artworks that these methods often produce, preferring instead to program their own software, build their own hardware interfaces and actively participate in the free and open source communities which surround these activities. They also explore contemporary ideas about "Live Cinema" and demonstrate the principles and tools explained during their Pure Data workshops.

This evening will also feature improvisational audio and video from local artists Zachary Reno, Seth Nehil, and Rob Tyler, among others.

Cost is $5 at the door, and starts around 9pm.

10:00 PM : Poet-Novelist Michelle Tea Reads @ ACME

Talk/Expo Flyered by Rob W.

Michelle Tea (b 1971), spawn of Kathy Acker, reads from her latest book Rose of No Mans Land. Acker's semantic and philosophical adventures were replaced by Tea's body mod, punk, Mission District, cheap drug, mosh pit, lesbian sexual revolution, poetry movement real life adventures in the 1990's, chronicled.

Working class, self educated, novelist, poet and icon, Tea is the organizer of Sister Spit, the SF girl spoken word events, bakes cookies for the Radar Reading Series at the SF Public Library and is proud of stirring things up wherever she goes. This event also features Portland artist, and cofounder of the Portland Zine Symposium, Nicole Georges, and music by The Golden Bears and Portland's Evolutionary Jass Band.

Perhaps Tea is a cross between Ani Difranco, Alan Ginsberg, Mary Magdaline and Charles Bukowski, but that really doesn't get it. For a better idea, Hip Mama editor Ariel Gore interviews Tea.

The event is a find raiser for the IPRC. 10PM 21+ at ACME 1305 SE 8th xMain $8

ART LIVING Flyered by Rob W.

Vampire Ball @ Wonder Ballroom

Portland's long damp dark winters may have something to do with our crafty vector. One of those vector's components are the consummate costumers. Sewing madly in their shingled turrets or dank cellars, some produce the blackest of gothic creations, and these cinderellas, not to be left at home, convene yearly a Vampire Ball. Sort of a gothic prom. Details and pictures of previous incarnations may be had at the event's website. Serpentine, the darkest of bellydancers perform. Dress code strictly enforced, so as not to disturb this subculture, more delicate than fierce, really. http://www.vampireballpdx.com/ At the Wonder Ballroom 9PM-2AM $20
