Visual artists and projections TBA...
The Swords Project
"Copy is the solo electronic electro dance-pop project of Marius Libman. A product of the 80's, video games played a major part in his developing years, and 8 bit video game music acted as the soundtrack to his early life along with his father's favorite albums, Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys and Kind of Blue by Miles Davis, two records among many that spun with regularity on the family turntable. These early influences are heard clearly in his intricate and melodic music that relies on weaving synth lines and booty shaking beats to deliver an eclectic and satisfying sound that maintains a keen awareness of the past as well as an eye on the future. After several appearances on local compilations from labels Toast and Jam and Eardrums For Eyelids, Copy's debut full length is scheduled to be released on the Portland based label Audio Dregs.

The music event is a benefit for Disjecta. All proceeds from the 3-point contest will go to Portland Public Schools. Celebrate the end of March Madness and mingle with your favorite local celebrities.
Happy hour starts at 6 PM and lasts until 8 PM. The rims will be up and open to the public during these hours and we encourage people to enter the contest and support PPS. The ten best shooters from Happy Hour will face off against our celebrity shooters for the city-wide triple crown at 9:15 PM.

“Scratching the Surface” will demonstrate Portland's rich and multifaceted arts and culture scene in an interesting and provocative manner. Collaboration and resourcefulness are at the heart of Portland’s grassroots arts successes. “Scratching the Surface” will capitalize on the talent and willingness of the creative community to dazzle the city. Along with help from City Commissioner Sam Adam’s Office, we will collaborate with other city organizations and creative professionals in many different capacities. At various docking spots along the river, artists will collaborate to present performances, dance, music, and interactive sculpture.
The community will be invited to all the varied events on the river and throughout the city that will make up the project: site specific installations, gallery exhibits, film and video presentations, lectures, and performance pieces. The CCC: The Community Cycling Center provides year-round programs for low-income youth and adults, serving more than 1,500 community members each year. Participants learn bike safety and maintenance and earn their own bicycles, locks and helmets.
The Community Cycling Center also operates a full-service retail bike shop that is open to the public and sells refurbished bicycles. Bicycles and parts are donated from individuals, institutions and supporting businesses. Volunteers, bicycle donations and financial contributions have made the Community Cycling Center the largest bicycle recycling organization in the US.
Holiday Bike Drive 2006: The Holiday Bike Drive is the Community Cycling Center's largest event of the year. They distribute refurbished bikes and new helmets to deserving children for the holidays. This year will give 600 kids refurbished bikes and new helmets. The Community Cycling Center was founded in 1994 to build skills and foster the personal growth of youth through community-oriented recreational and educational bicycle programs and services. The Music:
Alan Singley and the Pants Machine:
Alan Singley & Pants Machine's latest record Lovingkindness is, put simply, a sweet summer’s masterwork. Skipping from breezy midday-party songs to confessional depth and grace, Singley has, with this record, reinforced his position as one of the Northwest’s best kept secrets and most promising talents. “Water song” is a perfect example, and is so good it’s like a secret you wish you could keep in your pocket forever. For our money, though, no one’s summed up him and this record quite like the review below-
“Alan Singley and Pants Machine , to put it lightly, is a different sort of musician. Unabashedly enthusiastic and unashamed of that enthusiasm, the pop songwriter seeks more than anything else to connect with an audience on an intimate level. Sometimes that effort is a little unsettling, as it was last week when he showed up at my front door with a copy of his new album, Lovingkindness, and asked, through the screen door, “Are you Casey Jaaaahman?” I told him yes, and added that I hadn’t expected his album to be hand-delivered. His gaze wandered from my door up to some clouds, rested a moment on a couple of trees and then landed back down on me. “We were just driving around,” he said. Singley has always made music that’s as goofy and full of wonder as he is.
His songs are about love and nature, his voice well-rehearsed but still filled with a childlike unpredictability. Once in a while, Singley stumbles into a six-minute stint of wandering psychedelia or a quick and silly rock number, but the best work on his previous albums has also been the gentlest, with Singley’s fragile voice wrapped in piano and finger-picked guitar. It’s in those moments that one realizes Alan Singley was born in the wrong decade, his music resting comfortably between Smiley Smile-era Beach Boys or Village Green-era Kinks. Lovingkindness, Singley’s third release, is his first album with backing band Pants Machine. It’s also the first of Singley’s albums to be properly produced in a studio, by John Cohrs, Skyler Norwood (Point Juncture, WA) and Gus Elg (Wilding)...The machinery surrounding Singley not only helps him from straying into six-minute territory, it also wisely leaves him room to breathe on tracks like “Watersong,” a classic, multilayered pop ballad, and “Underneath,” wherein he sings with heartbreaking directness about an abusive father: “As we got older I started to think/ That underneath all the alcohol, the cocaine and the violence/ There was a man/ And I’m not saying it’s right but I understand.”
This seriousness is something new for Singley, but you wouldn’t know it by the way he delivers those lines, keeping the heavy parts heavy, the funny parts funny, and the pretty parts absolutely gorgeous. Alan Singley might be Portland’s most eccentric songwriter. But he is also its most under-appreciated, and as Lovingkindness ultimately attests, one of its very finest.”

Boy Eats Drum Machine…
Despite the greatness of the name Boy Eats Drum Machine, I have to let you in on a little secret that it may be a wee bit misleading. You see, on the album Pleasure the "Boys", Jonny Ragel, Peter Swenson, and Benjamin Rickard, don't simply eat a drum machine, they "eat" some of Portland's best drummers by sampling heavily from Bridgetown Breaks, a compilation of drum recordings that includes performances by Danny Seim of Menomena and Kevin O'Connor of Talkdemonic.
The use of local musicians (or at least samples of local musicians) isn't the only thing that distinguishes Boy Eats Drum Machine from other groups that associate with little electronic boxes that pump out beats; many of the tracks on Pleasure are what could easily be described as quite soulful. Yes, I realize that just because a musician uses samples, drum machines, etc. that they aren't then required to use a computer voice synthesis program, but it's summed up best on the track "The Taste Of Your Mouth" when Ragel declares "I'm just emotional".
While tracks such as "I'm an Angel Telling Lies" and "Sometimes You Wanna Go Where Nobody Knows Your Name" may highlight the emotion present in Ragel's vocals, Pleasure certainly has tracks for those that want to enjoy some great beats and get caught up in the musical layers. –The Philler

Please Step Out of the Vehicle
An insane amalgamation of lo-fi orchestral psychedelic pop gems from Portland-based Please Step Out Of The Vehicle, this album takes you through free jazz freakouts, Game Boy outbursts, layered moog synth-based songwriting, and pop anthems that ring through your brain for days. Please Step Out Of The Vehicle are a large band with a textured, triumphant sound that borrows lightly from the best moments of Pavement and the Flaming Lips, squishing together classic psychedelia, video game beeps, folk, summertime pop, and left-leaning lyrical blankets. Sleeping Right And The Best In Homeopathic Magic runs together like an album should, blending song to song and linking lyrical themes. The album is their debut, and a very special one indeed.
Honored in the Top 10 of Willamette Week’s Best New Band 2006 Poll
“Please Step Out of the Vehicle is a big team of Portland kids playing things like flute, glockenspiel, farfisa, and all the standard guitar/bass/drums action ... it has the lazy, crowded, behind-the-beat stoned shuffle of Pavement, some of Beck’s (long-abandoned) junkyard folk, but mostly plays its own game ... upbeat and organic sounding – a great listen when it’s damn cold outside and going out for a drink means gloves, hat, two sweaters, and frozen fucking feet.” The Portland Mercury

08:00 PM : Black and White and Read All Over @ Portland Art Center
Fundraiser Flyered by kmikeym
What's Black and White and Read All Over?
Benefit for the Independent Publishing Resource Center
at the Portland Art Center
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Independent Publishing Resource Center will celebrate Portland's art and literary scenes during a special fund-raising ball at the Portland Art Center on Saturday, November 4 from 8 p.m. till midnight. (see Media Advisory below).
The organizers of "A Text Ball in Celebration of Portland's Art and Literary Scenes; A Benefit for the Independent Publishing Resource Center" encourage the public to get creative and come "dressed to be read."
"Our clothing speaks for us in many ways. Besides logos, our t-shirts and hoodies are loaded with place names and slogans." says IPRC board member Barb Tetenbaum, co-organizer and book artist. "At the Text Ball, we encourage attendees to go all out to embody their text and create party outfits that are reading experiences." Tetenbaum is preparing a chalkboard dress, from which will hang pieces of chalk and an eraser for "spontaneous communication."
The evening will feature a parade of costumes that will culminate in an awards ceremony. The best costumes in literary categories will net prizes that are donated from local business and arts organizations, such as Literary Arts and Microcosm Publishing. The iconoclastic band, Trashcan Joe, will provide the music.
Authors of the IPRC's popular "Zine of the Month" will be honored. The "Zine of the Month" is a benefit for IPRC members who donate $100 or more annually. "So many really wonderful zines have very limited distribution. By receiving a different zine each month, our subscribers get acquainted with zines and authors that they would never discover on their own." says Marilyn Zornado, co-organizer and co-owner of the Fremont Garden Press.

What Is the IPRC?
The Independent Publishing Resource Center (IPRC) supports
community-based arts education and expression by providing a
self-service work studio and printing equipment; instruction and
workshop opportunities; outreach to Portland's youth and disadvantaged
via public libraries and schools; and a lending library that houses
more than 5,000 independently published "zines" and ephemera.
What Is a Zine?
A "zine" (pronounced zeen) is, simply put, a self-published booklet.
The history of zines stretches back through the 20th century (and,
arguably, throughout human history) but was most directly influenced
by the mass production of home computers in the early 1990s.
Do-it-yourself copy shops were the birthplace of the modern zine,
which can broach any topic from music review to memoir to reportage.
Many zines have been distributed for a number of years and have built
substantial audiences.

HOW DO YOU BUILD A 24,000 SQUARE FOOT INCUBATOR FOR CONTEMPORARY ART IN THE MIDDLE OF PORTLAND, OR?
DISJECTA Interdisciplinary Art Center is creating a sustainable, year-round exhibition space for contemporary arts that engages artists, patrons and communities in innovative ways.
We've had a great time in the belovedly raw Templeton Building over the last year. Disjecta hosted the kinds of creative endeavors and community events that make Portland Portland: PICA's TB:A festival, Seaplane's Little White Dress show; and the Mike Barber/Cydney Wilkes dance work A Certain Facilitation of Impasse. We've built our new white walls around the exquisitely curated Portland Modern Saturation and built more for the contemporary installations and performances of Haunted, which brought artists from SF, LA, NY and abroad to our fair city.

09:00 PM : PRA: Logan Lynn, Boy Eats Drum Machine, Beatpusher @ Rotture
Fundraiser Flyered by kmikeym
THE PORTLAND RADIO AUTHORITY PRESENTS:
PDX SPRING ELECTRONIC SHOWCASE
Seasonal benefit features Logan Lynn, Boy Eats Drum Machine,
Beatpusher, DJ Sappho and DJ Girlfriends
PORTLAND, Ore. — June 9, 2007 — Portland Radio Authority (www.praradio.org) presents its PDX Spring Electronic Showcase on Saturday, June 9 at 9 p.m. at Rotture, located at 315 SE Third Avenue, PDX. This season features sparkling, electro-layered beats from Logan Lynn, Boy Eats Drum Machine, DJ Girlfriends, Beatpusher and DJ Sappho . Cover is $3 to $5 sliding scale, 21 and over. Proceeds help keep the Portland Radio Authority up and running as well as helping to spread its warm, fuzzy and obsessed love of music.
Logan Lynn, described as “ an emo prophet with a penchant for electronic beats,” has been writing and recording his own music for the last decade. In 2000, his debut album “Glee” released a blissful, sex-drenched romp soaked with themes of religion, sexuality and identity alongside upbeat grooves and “Let’s dance!” rhythms. A blend of spleen-venting lyrics and optimism provides ample fodder for happy booty-shaking galore.
Boy Eats Drum Machine mixes fuzzy guitar and electro-fun turntables with deep, big-beat bass, touting influences ranging from anywhere from DJ Shadow to Neil Diamond, from Public Enemy to the Postal Service. Portland has given a lot of props to this trio, made up of three men on a mission to turn your heart into a chewy gummy bear.
Beatpusher thrives on modern madness to thump forth deep bass lines with melodic transcendental melodies, sampling world sounds with found sounds and creating a brain portal that forces your body into doing some sort of rhythmic gyration.
Known for her unusual ability to mix practically any and all styles of music ala a Cuisine-art, DJ Sappho makes sure no one leaves the dance floor without a layer of sweat, mixing disco to micro-house to cheese-pop to straight up techno. You dare not come to the club with your dancing shoes when you see her!
DJ Girlfriends is Portland's hot new party DJ. He holds it down at Rotture for the Thin Pink Line weekly with DJ Linoleum and also has a show on The PRA called RUBICON Radio with DJ Bonaparte. He spins any thing from new wave to nu rave, punk, house, drippy disco and indie pop.

Psych-blues garage band Dark Skies will headline the festivities with stomping, twisting, throttling heavy soul sounds reminiscent of the Groundhogs and MC5 mixed with Dead Moon and the Wipers. The Pink Snowflakes are described by a random guy at a house party as “kinda like Pink Floyd, Mudhoney, Black Sabbath and acid…man,” known to play shows with gigantic flowers and artsy TVs as a backdrop. Guau Guau lists influences that include “The Shining” and The Kinks (“and just about anybody with the word ‘the’before their name”) and DJs Gram and Automne will spin XXX. Profits at the door support Architects Without Borders' efforts [receipts available for those of you who need the tax deductions]
A team of Portland-area architects, designers, and engineers from Architects Without Borders-Oregon (AWB-Oregon) is providing pro bono design for a master plan of the Wollega Academy, a 40-acre site in Dongoro, Ethiopia, as well as design for several new school and housing buildings.
Currently rural folks, kids and adults, work all day - back breaking work - then come to this campus to study with sixty or seventy others, in a classroom big enough for thirty. It is hot, it is dark and it is ten o’clock in the evening, and they are here because education is everything and this is what is available. A lot of things are needed; Architects Without Borders can at least help out with a school.
The expansion of the Wollega Academy in Ethiopia will make it one of the only schools in the region that provides full educational curriculum for grades 9-12. AWB-Oregon has joined with local contractor Mike Philips to begin work on a new campus, which features large, day lit, naturally ventilated classrooms, dormitories, and a new library. The new campus will give students of Wollega the opportunity to engage learning in a safe, comfortable setting, virtually unknown in Ethiopia.
All money collected at the door will support Architects Without Borders’ efforts. Drafting/Art supplies will be shipped directly to the students @ the university.

PORTLAND'S FAMED INDIE ROCKERS
JAMES MERCER AND STEPHEN MALKMUS
TO ROCK FOR ART EDUCATION
AT "BUCKMAN BASH,"
APRIL 11, 2008
PORTLAND, OREGON (21 February 2008) — Indie music superstars will be shining for Buckman Elementary School this spring when James Mercer, frontman for The Shins, and Stephen Malkmus, of Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks, rock the stylish Jupiter Hotel stage on Friday, April 11, 2008. The BUCKMAN BASH, with local rock and art luminaries in attendance, will benefit the award-winning arts-integrated academic education program of Buckman Elementary School Arts Focus. Tickets ($50) for this not-to-be-missed musical experience will go on sale March 21, 2008 at 3:00pm through www.brownpapertickets.com and Jackpot Records. Information about the event will be available at www.buckmanelementary.org/artsale.
The BUCKMAN BASH, to be held at the Jupiter Hotel in Portland's hip inner eastside (800 East Burnside, Portland, Oregon), will feature rare solo performances by James Mercer and Stephen Malkmus, and an opening musical act to be announced. Performance artist, writer, and filmmaker Andrew Dickson (whose performance piece Sell Out was a hit at T:BA 2007) will add a dash of hilarious irreverence as MC for the evening's festivities. A silent art auction featuring work by acclaimed artist Storm Tharp and others, video shorts, and a Buckman student art gallery will complete the evening's festivities.
James Mercer rose to fame following the release of The Shins' first album, Oh, Inverted World, and his music has been embraced by adoring fans and critics alike. The Shins' most recent recording, Wincing the Night Away (Sub Pop), entered the Billboard 200 at number 2. Their previous album, Chutes Too Narrow, was called "one of the deftest, subtlest and just plain loveliest guitar-rock albums of the decade" by Rolling Stone.
Stephen Malkmus has been lauded for his musical artistry and influential role in the indie-rock movement, with his work in the bands Pavement and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. Malkmus contributed the singing voice for Cate Blanchett's portrayal of Bob Dylan in the film I'm Not There, and he and the Jicks recently announced the early March 2008 release of their newest recording, Real Emotional Trash (Matador).
The BUCKMAN BASH at the Jupiter Hotel is a part of the 2008 Buckman Art Show & Sell, an annual celebration of art, craft, and arts education, returning for its 18th year to Buckman Elementary School. Featuring the work of more than 120 Pacific Northwest artists and craftspersons, food, music, and kids' activities, this bustling, vibrant community event and juried art festival benefits Portland's Buckman Arts Elementary School. The 18th annual Buckman Art Show & Sell art festival takes place Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12, 2008, at Buckman Arts Elementary School, 320 SE 16th Avenue, Portland.
The Buckman Art Show & Sell, which began in 1991 as an innovative way to simultaneously support Buckman and provide exposure to artists in the community, has grown into a major event that draws both established and emerging artists and art buyers from Oregon and Washington. Buckman Elementary School Arts Focus, a Portland Public School, offers an innovative arts-integrated academic curriculum, in addition to high-frequency arts classes in dance, drama and music, and visual art. At Buckman, Portland's premier arts elementary school, students internalize their learning through these varied forms of creative self-expression, resulting in increased self-esteem, absorption of academic material, creative thinking, and understanding and acceptance of the self. Combining a love of the arts with high academic achievement, Buckman is both a neighborhood school and focus option that is open for admission to all elementary students in Portland.
More information about the Buckman Art Show & Sell at Buckman Elementary School and the BUCKMAN BASH at the Jupiter Hotel will be available at www.buckmanelementary.org/artsale.
