A presentation and discussion with Stephen Ervin, Director of Computer
Resources, Harvard University Graduate School of Design

Stephen M Ervin, FASLA, has been developing, advocating, and exploring
digital approaches in landscape architecture and planning for more than
a quarter of a century. He has taught in the Landscape Architecture
department at Harvard's Graduate School of Design, where he now serves
as the Assistant Dean for Information Technology, for more than a
decade. His 2001 book, 'Landscape Modeling: Digital Approaches', won an
ASLA Merit Award in 2002. He has published articles in LAM and other
journals on the integration of GIS and CAD, presented workshops and
lectures worldwide, and is currently responsible for the state-of-the
art digital infrastructure at the GSD. His nomination for Fellow of the
ASLA, in 2005, cited him as "a digital pioneer in the field".

This talk presents a personal, historical, and technological survey of
3d modeling in CAD and GIS, with an emphasis on visualization and
animation; and includes Ervin's assessment of a number of avenues of
current & continuing exploration for landscape architects and planners.
