What: NATIONAL book launch of REAL FUN + art opening featuring limited edition prints from REAL FUN (Ashod chose to bypass South x Southwest instead opting for the launch of the book and his press junket from his hometown, Portland, OR). Published by PictureBox books @ OFFICE, of course!
Book Details: 128 page paperback, launches April 26, $24.95 @ OFFICE featuring 100+ photos taken by Ashod with a Polaroid 600 (one-step) - capturing candid shots of life on the road with 2006/7’s most beloved indie rockers, of “regular life” before and after rock shows. A beautiful blur of highways and hangovers, with wonderful anecdotes written by Ashod, providing an intimate, insider’s look at the indie rock landscape, with a large focus on many indie rockers or bands who have in the past or currently call Portland home (including the author, Ashod Simonian who calls NE Portland home), such as members of: DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, THE DECEMBERISTS, ELLIOTT SMITH, THE SHINS, SLEATER KINNEY, THE THERMALS and SPOON. INCLUDES limited edition CD curated by Simonian especially for the book with songs from Pine Marten, Chris Funk, Kaito, Les Georges Leningrad, and M. Ward, among others. Even for those not interested in the music scene, this book really is a great road trip book, with an amazing design sensibility.
Photos include images of: Cat Power, Death Cab, Decemberists, Dengue Fever, Earlimart, Elliott Smith, Grandaddy, Microphones, Pavement, Rilo Kiley, the Shins, The Silversun Pickups, Sleater Kinney, the Thermals and many others.
Photography show highlights: Through OFFICE, as part of Last Thursday, Ashod is also selling limited edition Polaroid photography/art prints on canvas (12 x 12 size) of 24 of the best photos from the book – showcasing both beloved Portlanders as well as fantastic, gritty, icons of life on the road across the United States — from Death Valley to upper state New York. Art prints will be selling for $200 (or less – price is TBD). The art opening provides a special opportunity to purchase affordable art capturing the images of the Portland’s music scene and even rare images of the late and great Elliott Smith before he died (the author knew him well...details in the book).
Event highlights: Book signing with author, rare opportunity to purchase one of kind intimate photographs of renowned indie rockers connected to Portland, such as Elliott Smith -- includes cocktails sponsored in part by NEW DEAL VODKA, and some very special guests, featured in the book, will be attending the opening.
