About The City of Tomorrow

The only wind quintet to win a gold medal at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in ten years, the City of Tomorrow aspires to be a leading international ensemble dedicated to the performance and creation of new music for winds.

Since their Fischoff win in May 2011, the quintet has toured the midwest United States twice and will tour the west coast in spring 2013. Performance highlights include the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Series in Chicago, the Mayo Clinic, the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, and the Ashland (WI) Chamber Music Society on the scenic shore of Lake Superior. The quintet has collaborated with the Portland Cello Project for two performances of Radiohead’s classic album OK Computer in Oregon last September.

Most recently, the City of Tomorrow performed on the New Music Edmonton series, preceded by a three-week residency at the Banff Centre. In Banff, they performed and recorded as the wind section of Gruppo Montebello, a new-music chamber orchestra. The members of The City of Tomorrow have also won numerous awards: the 2012 Kranichsteiner Musikpreis at the Darmstadt Summer Music Courses, the 2011 Asian Double Reed Association Competition, and the 2012 Harold Wright Clarinet Award at the Boston Woodwind Society. The ensemble’s members studied at the Manhattan School of Music, Northwestern University, Oberlin College, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and the University of Texas at Austin.

About Marianna Ritchey

Marianna Ritchey received her PhD in Musicology from UCLA in 2011 and is currently a professor at Lewis and Clark College. She spent her youth playing in bands in Portland (the Badger King, Dear Nora, and Lloyd and Michael) and received a grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council of Oregon for the production and performance of her multi-media rock opera “The Showering Dragons,” which premiered at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art’s annual Time-Based Art Festival. Dr. Ritchey has also written and presented papers on Guy Maddin’s film “The Saddest Music in the World,” Kenny G in jazz reception, the ghostly afterlife of the medieval dies irae plainchant, and Mariah Carey. She is interested in the French Revolution, Hildegard of Bingen, gothic novels, zombie movies, Sigmund Freud, sharks, dog psychology, David Foster Wallace, and contemporary art music.
