On Thursday, June 30, the Dill Pickle Club and Publication Studio conclude the PDX Re-Print lecture series with BURNSIDE: A COMMUNITY, a program on the history of homelessness in Portland as well as current changes in the Old Town/ Chinatown area. A book of the same title, originally produced in 1979, will be made available again in a new edition.

The lecture will begin with the book’s author Kathleen Ryan in conversation with Street Roots Editor Israel Bayer. The event will then open to Suenn Ho and Julie McCurdy, who will speak about their respective work with MulvannyG2 Architecture and Sisters Of The Road Cafe. Together, the group will explore the book’s relevance to Portland today, before a Q & A with the audience.

The event will make available the re-printed book BURNSIDE: A COMMUNITY. Self-produced by Kathleen Ryan, the book assembles photographs of the Old Town/ Chinatown area. Documented here are the flophouses, theaters and saloons of skid row, with attention to the neighborhood’s ethnic and historical origins.

PRESENTER BIOGRAPHIES
KATHLEEN RYAN is a self-taught photographer, and a visual artist who works in clay, ceramics and wood, often using discarded materials. Together with her husband Mark Beach, she ran Coast To Coast Books, a small publishing company in the 1970s-80s in NE Portland. She currently lives in Nehalem, where she continues her art practice.

ISRAEL BAYER is the Executive Director of Street Roots. In 2010, he won a Skidmore Prize, an annual award given to the outstanding work of nonprofit workers under the age of 36 in the Portland-area. He has worked with street papers around the globe for more than 12 years, and is a published poet and author.

SUENN HO is an Urban Designer for MulvannyG2 Architecture. She has worked throughout her career to bridge diverse communities, cultures and history through design and teaching. Her design projects include the bronze sidewalk plaques celebrating the cultural heritage of Old Town/ Chinatown, the Astoria Chinese Heritage Park and Pacific Tower, a 15-story afforable housing complex in Old Town. She has taught design at Columbia College (New York City), University of Hong Kong and University of Oregon.

JULIE McCURDY is currently Housing Organizer at Sisters Of The Road Cafe. She has been an active participant in the Empowered Voices Media Program at Sisters, which produces documentaries by and about the homeless community. She lived on the streets before founding Right 2 Survive, a homeless advocacy organization and monthly radio show on KBOO Community Radio.
